Red : Difficult 5v5 and/or power play matchup, stacking not advisable

Oilers Offensive Outlook

5v5 (adj) (13 games): 71.23 CF/60 (2) | 60.84 CA/60 (10) | 3.01 xGF/60 (1) | 2.26 xGA/60 (19)

The Oilers are working through some things right now. They have all kinds of signs pointing towards an offensive breakout — one of the best xGF/60 numbers, a strong possession number, great shot generation — but the results haven’t exactly been there.

Tonight they’ll head east and start a road trip in Brooklyn. The Islanders have been improving defensively over the past two weeks and now sport respectable numbers, especially their expected goals allowed at 5v5. Goaltending has been an issue, so the door is cracked open for the Oilers to come through.

Lines could be shaken up a bit here to try and jumpstart the offense. The problem, of course, isn’t the top line, although Connor McDavid will make a strong linemate out of just about anyone. He should continue to skate with Leon Draisaitl and Patrick Maroon. The Islanders don’t always try to match their scoring lines against the opposition, but there should still be a fair amount of McDavid vs Tavares here. McDavid is mostly matchup proof, so while the draw isn’t ideal, it’s nothing to shy away from on its own. In fact, this could be one of the rare nights where McDavid comes with reasonable ownership. The trade off for the slightly subpar 5v5 matchup is facing a struggle New York netminder.

Ryan Strome will make his return to Brooklyn coming off a solid outing from a few nights ago with linemates Drake Caggiula and Jussi Jokinen. It could be argued that this line has more upside than the “second” line of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Milan Lucic, and whomever fills in for Kailer Yamamoto. Though the numbers point to some better days ahead for the Edmonton offense, on paper tonight’s matchup isn’t a great spot to see results.

Oilers Special Teams Outlook
The Islanders have been right around the middle of the road in terms of going shorthanded this year. When they have played a man or two down, they are right near the league median in shot attempts and scoring chances allowed. They have really done a good job limiting the high-danger shot attempts allowed to opposing power plays, however, ranking just third from the bottom in terms of lowest HDCA/60. Edmonton has been quite strong on the power play so far this year, posting rates in the top ten in shot attempts and scoring chances generated. Unfortunately they have been one of the league’s worst teams at drawing penalties. Add it all up, and it’s a neutral matchup when things shake out.
