NBA PrizePicks Predictions Today

Jabari Walker – 8.5 Rebounds + Assists

The Blazers lost a controversial heartbreaker in Oklahoma City last night, and tonight they’ll look to dust themselves off and get right back to it in Houston, where they’ll face the Rockets. This has largely been a disastrous season for the lone NBA team up in the PNW, but perhaps the team has found a little something in young forward Jabari Walker.

Walker has been starting of late with Shaedon Sharpe nursing an abdominal injury, and we’re projecting another start this evening. So far this month, Walker is logging an average of nearly 29 minutes per game. He’s also quietly averaging 10.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per outing in January, an improvement over his season-long scoring (8.6) and rebounding (6.1) contributions. He’s grabbed at least 12 caroms in 3 different games this month, including 2 of his last 3.

Walker isn’t much of a passer – averaging 0.8 helpers per game on the year – so we’ll have to bank on another big effort on the boards if he’s going to surpass 8.5 combined rebounds + assists tonight. There’s a pretty clear path here if Portland can keep it close, as Walker has played at least 34 minutes in 2 of the last 3 games. The lone exception was the team’s 24-point beatdown at the hands of the Lakers in which he logged only 22 minutes.

  • Play: More Than 8.5 Rebounds + Assists

Giannis Antetokounmpo – 52.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists

From time to time you’ll see “less than” picks on star players popping in our PrizePicks model. I don’t necessarily think these are bad values, but I typically shy away from writing them up because it’s generally not a fun sweat hoping a guy like Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, or Giannis Antetokounmpo endures a rough game.

Tonight, though, I’m willing to make an exception with Giannis set to face off against the Cavs. Perhaps the Bucks get a mental boost in this one following the dismissal of the seemingly unpopular Adrian Griffin yesterday, but it’s a tough matchup regardless. Cleveland hasn’t really lost a step defensively even with Evan Mobley sidelined, as Jarrett Allen has become one of the game’s most impactful rim defenders. The Cavs are yielding the 6th-fewest points in the paint per game this season (46.7). Obviously, that’s where Giannis does most of his damage on offense. Cleveland is also 9th in team rebound rate, 21st in pace, and 2nd in defensive efficiency.

It’s an icky spot for the Bucks, in general, and their implied team total in this one is about 3 south of their season average. Antetokounmpo is fully capable of blowing past 52.5 combined points + rebounds + assists because he’s an incredible player capable of piling up the stats in a hurry, but this is a poor enough on-paper matchup to where I’m willing to put my hope in that stingy Cavs defense.

  • Play: Less Than 52.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists

Jaren Jackson – 2.5 Blocks + Steals

To say the Grizzlies have been an injury-riddled mess this season would be the understatement of a lifetime, but Jaren Jackson has been one of the few constants. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has seen a dip in performance on that end of the floor this season, however. After averaging a career-best 3 blocked shots per game a season ago, JJJ is averaging about half that total so far in 2023-24.

The Grizzlies’ defense as a whole has suffered this season without Steven Adams in there to patrol the paint. So far this month, Jackson is contributing twin averages of 1.8 blocks and 1.8 steals per game. Memphis isn’t in the best spot tonight against a defensively sound Miami outfit, but the Heat are middle of the pack in terms of turning the ball over. They’re 15th in turnovers per game, 16th in steals allowed per game, and 14th in blocks allowed.

We’re really just banking on Jackson’s defensive prowess here. 2.5 combined blocks + steals doesn’t sound like a lot considering he averaged more blocks alone per game just a season ago, and he showed in the last game (6 steals!) that he’s still a disruptive defensive force.
