Sunday, June 9th

Hello Grinders. We have an 10-game main slate with several studs in difficult spots and a bunch of mediocrity to sort through on the pitching end. This makes things pretty interesting from a tournament perspective because there are no clear cut routes. Let’s start diving in and see what we can uncover.

Question 1: What Do We Do At Pitching?

Jake Odorizzi vs Tigers – Odorizzi against the Tigers headlines our Sunday slate, which feels weird with Blake Snell on the slate too. At $10,900 on DraftKings, Odorizzi is the highest priced pitcher there, while the second highest priced pitcher on FanDuel at $9,800. We have a really interesting matchup here as the Tigers are an extremely right-handed heavy team and have the 3rd highest K% this season at 26.1%. Normally that would be a good thing, but Odorizzi is someone who has typically been a reverse-splits pitcher, meaning he’s struggled more against right-handed batters. Odorizzi has been fantastic this season, holding a career-high 28 K% and cutting his HR/9 ratio to 0.56. The increase in strikeouts may be attributed to his change in pitch mix where he’s doubled his cutter usage and now uses a sinker 24% of the time (this was a pitch he didn’t use in 2017 and only 19% in 2018). Interestingly enough, Odorizzi hasn’t shown reverse splits in 2019, allowing right-handers to have just a .187 wOBA against him compared to a .283 wOBA by left-handed batters. On paper this is a weak Tigers offense that ranks second to last in ISO, so Odorizzi should have success here in both limiting home runs and strikeouts. Given the matchup, Odorizzi will be a target of mine in all formats. Let’s scan some of our other options.
