Sunday Night Football Betting Picks: Ravens at Patriots

Article Image

In years past, Sunday Night Football featuring the Ravens and Patriots would absolutely be the game of the week. While the Ravens are in the thick of the playoff hunt, the team does not possess the same dominant aura of 2019. The Patriots seem to have always been rebuilding in 2019 as Patriots’ stars of the past have migrated south. Can Cam Newton put New England on his back and right the ship? Will the Baltimore offense return to the explosive form of last season? Here is a sports betting breakdown plus Sunday Night Football betting picks for the Ravens at the Patriots.

Ravens at Patriots SNF Betting Preview

Sheesh, will I ever cover a primetime game that doesn’t feature a big road favorite? The Baltimore Ravens are 6.5 or 7-point favorites depending on your favorite online betting site. So, what do we do with another big road favorite?

The Ravens are CLEARLY the better football team in pretty much every phase of football. The Ravens running game is obviously very strong and should be able to exploit a weakened Patriots’ defense. Per Rotogrinders’ GridironIQ, the Patriots defense allows a 54.67% success rate on rushing plays, and well… that just happens to be exactly what Baltimore wants to do. Baltimore leads the league in rushing players per game (33.2).

This week, Lamar Jackson stated that opposing defenses are “calling out our plays.” The Ravens finished 2019 with the most points per game (31.9) and have struggled to score points on offense this season. Teams are able to key in on a rushing attack that gets less dynamic when defenses have a year to watch the film and prepare. The Ravens need to become more creative with the passing game to keep defenses honest. While weather will not be ideal tonight, look for Marquise Brown and Mark Andrews to be involved early. With Stephon Gilmore likely out for this contest, Brown makes for a nice DFS captain given his ability to put up a ton of points in small bursts. With so many people likely to play Lamar Jackson in the top spot, Brown will help differentiate your single-game lineup.

The New England offense will have their hands full tonight with a Baltimore defense ranked in the top ten in yards per play, points per game (1st – 17.8 PPG), and sack percentage. Jimmy Smith is doubtful to play but New England lacks any true perimeter threats. N’Keal Harry might be back for tonight’s game but Jakobi Meyers continues to emerge as the top receiving option for Cam Newton. Meyers will likely see plenty of volume but will likely struggle with efficiency due to the stalwart Ravens’ defense and his quarterback’s inefficiency. Newton ranks bottom five in the league in QB rating and will likely struggle to find improvement given the lack of weapons around him.

Tonight’s spread has pretty much stayed within a half-point of 7 throughout the week. The implied total moved up from 41 points all the way to 43.5 points — not that the number was high, to begin with. Will the Ravens be able to cover a big number? Can Cam Newton engineer any offense to keep this game close?

Sunday Night Football Betting Picks

Recently, I have leaned towards laying the points with the road favorites because the quality of the competition is so bad. This did not work against the Jets or the Giants, but I plan on going back to the well again tonight. The way Baltimore constructs their offensive gameplan will likely suffocate the New England Patriots. The weather is going to make it a bit tough late per Kevin Roth’s report and that is not even factoring in the dominance of Baltimore’s defense. This game is going to be ugly in many ways, but mainly for New England. I will lay the points, _again, on the road favorite hoping for a better result.

Ravens and Patriots Player Props

Lamar Jackson Over 52.5 Rushing Yards (-110)

The Patriots continue to struggle with opposing ground games and Lamar Jackson is more dynamic than any back in the NFL. The combination of a struggling offense against an electric, mobile quarterback makes me salivate. Jackson has three straight games north of this prop on the ground and in a potentially ugly second half because of weather, Jackson could be tasked with more on his shoulders. I will take the over in a game that will likely showcase just how dynamic of a player the Ravens have in Lamar Jackson.

Marquise Brown Longest Reception Over 21.5 Yards (-102)

With an offensive considered predictable, the Ravens must find ways to get their most explosive weapon loose to make plays. The Patriots allow a league-worst 12.4 yards per completion and could be without Stephon Gilmore again. Brown’s speed is undeniable — a 50-yard bomb is always in play. The weather does not look great, but Brown’s speed can clear this over with a broken coverage at any point. Look for Brown to get make a big play or two against this weakened New England secondary. I will take the over.
