We’re about a quarter of the way through the NFL campaign, and already the tight end position is continuing to be the funhouse it always has been.

But I like houses and I like fun, so let’s get into some TE rankings for Week 5’s fantasy football contests.

Week 5 Fantasy Football Tight End Rankings

1. T.J. Hockenson – Yes, I have Hockenson ranked a spot higher than his opponent at the same position. Kansas City has given up the tenth most yards to tight ends this season, tied with Cincinnati.

2. Travis Kelce – On the other hand, Minnesota has allowed the fewest receiving yards to tight ends so far this season. Kelce is still the best player at the position in a vacuum on a week-to-week basis, so if you drafted him, you’re starting him.

3. Sam LaPorta – LaPorta has been dominant this year, hauling in 22 receptions for 242 yards and a touchdown so far this campaign. This week he’s up against the 0-4 Carolina Panthers.

4. Dallas Goedert – On the one hand, Goedert has looked bad this year. On the other hand, the Rams defense asks for the opposing QB to throw to the tight end.

5. Tyler Higbee – Everyone is talking about the return of Cooper Kupp, but the fact remains that the Eagles have given up the sixth-most receiving yards to tight ends so far this season.

6. Mark Andrews – Andrews is one of the best tight ends on a weekly basis, but he faces a stingy Steelers defense, a team allowing only the fifth-fewest yards to tight ends.

7. Hayden Hurst – Hurst isn’t here because of his numbers, his team, or his quarterback. Hurst is here because the Detroit Lions hemorrhage fantasy points to tight ends. The Lions have given up a whopping 31 receptions and 293 receiving yards to tight ends thus far.

8. Darren Waller – Waller’s problem is that he has an interception-prone quarterback. Daniel Jones is tied for the most interceptions thrown this year.

9. George Kittle – Outside of one game, Kittle hasn’t looked great. Still, Kittle may yet be the key that unlocks this offense against a stout Dallas Cowboys defense.

10. Evan Engram – Buffalo is a tick worse than Pittsburgh when it comes to receiving yards allowed to the tight end position, but the Bills have allowed zero touchdowns to the position all season.

Fantasy Football Tight End Notes

As is often the case, tight end is tough. If you have a top-end player at the position, you generally start him regardless of the matchup. After that, you really have to start digging into things if you want to make the best decision when it comes to which tight end to play each week. Don’t assume the biggest names will have the biggest scores each week, and don’t be afraid to start a potential sleeper in a better matchup.

Hopefully these TE rankings for Week 5 of fantasy football provide some clarity.

Good luck in Week 5!

He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
