Pitcher Grind Down
- Sonny Gray – Gray is building on last year’s impressive rookie season, with a very strong start to 2014. After 12 starts he owns a 6-1 record, a 2.45 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. However, he’s been a little bit less effective in each of his last two starts and he was shelled in his only other career visit to Baltimore. He forces a ton of ground balls which makes him a much safer play at Camden Yards than many other pitchers. The matchup is not ideal, but this kid can pitch and has a nice GPP upside. Rating = 6
Salaries: $8500 FD, $17604 DS, $15150 DD, $9000 DK, $113100 FF, $25400 SS, $NA FTD
- Kevin Gausman – Gausman is a highly touted prospect with nasty stuff, but he’s struggled mightily in his few chances with the Orioles. He’s armed with a mid 90’s fastball and has racked up more than a strikeout per inning at AAA Norfolk this season. With that said, he owns a career 6.10 ERA at the MLB level and this Oakland lineup is very dangerous. He’s nothing more than a high-risk/high-reward target that’s best used as a GPP flier. Rating = 4
Salaries: $5500 FD, $13545 DS, $9100 DD, $ DK, $ FF, $ SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
Oakland
Brandon Moss – Gausman has had less success against left-handed batters this season in Norfolk and Moss is the A’s most dangerous southpaw. He has hits in five straight games and showed his “double-dong” power earlier this week. He posted a .905 OPS last season against right-handed pitching and always swings to produce better away from the Coliseum.
Additional Plays: Josh Donaldson, Coco Crisp, Yoenis Cespedes, John Jaso
Baltimore
Chris Davis – Davis is heating up; with hits in five straight games and homeruns in two of the last three. He posted a 1.143 OPS against right-handed pitching last season and also thrived at Camden Yards. He also has hits in each of his prior two meetings against Sonny Gray.
Additional Plays: Nelson Cruz, Adam Jones, Manny Machado

Pitcher Grind Down
- Chris Sale – Sale has emerged as one of the games best starting pitchers. He’ll take the mound with a sensational 5-0 record, 1.59 ERA, .60 WHIP and 10.35 K’s/9. Sale absolutely dominated the Angels last season; tossing 16.1 scoreless innings and allowing only four hits while striking out 19 batters. The only thing that has slowed him down this season is rain and he’s my top pitching option of the day. Rating = 9
Salaries: $10000 FD, $23335 DS, $21300 DD, $13000 DK, $131500 FF, $33000 SS, $NA FTD
- Matt Shoemaker – Shoemaker has pitched admirably for the Angels, posting a 4.03 ERA through 29 innings. He’s been terrific at home so far this year, recording a 2.35 ERA. This White Sox lineup is much more formidable with Jose Abreu back, and with Chris Sale on the opposing mound, Shoemaker is a long shot to record a “W”. Rating = 4.5
Salaries: $5300 FD, $11175 DS, $8250 DD, $6500 DK, $80400 FF, $15400 SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
Chicago White Sox
Jose Abreu – Abreu continues his assuault on MLB pitching and he’s now racked up 17 homeruns in just 48 games. He owns a .975 OPS versus right-handed pitching and has a 1.278 OPS so far in June.
Additional Plays: Adam Dunn
LA Angels
Opponents are hitting just .126 off of Sale this season, so I will not be targeting any Angels bats today

Pitcher Grind Down
- Bartolo Colon – Colon has evolved into a nice GPP only target this season, as he’s pitched very well in eight of his 11 starts this season, but is definitely proving to be a risk for a blowup anytime he takes the mound. He doesn’t seem to get any respect despite an 18-6 record and a 2.65 ERA last season. While he may struggle to walk away with a “W” against this very good San Francisco team, he’ll at least have the luxury of pitching in the spacious AT&T Park. Rating = 5
Salaries: $7700 FD, $15423 DS, $13800 DD, $7200 DK, $94100 FF, $22500 SS, $NA FTD
- Tim Hudson – At 38 years old, Hudson is still proving to still be a very effective starting pitcher. He sports a 6-2 record with a 1.75 ERA and .87 WHIP through his first 11 starts this season. He’s only allowed nine runs over his last eight starts and has a great matchup on tap here at home against the Mets. He’s in play in all scenarios, but is more valueable on sites the sites that factor WHIP into their scoring. Rating = 7
Salaries: $7600 FD, $17224 DS, $18050 DD, $9500 DK, $115400 FF, $29700 SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
NY Mets Tim Hudson is only allowing opposing hitters to hit .209 off of him and I’m not expecting much offense from the Mets today, so I am not targeting any of their batters.
San Francisco
Hunter Pence – While I prefer to target him against left-handed pitching, Pence is just a consistent hitter and safe play in cash games today. He’s had success against Bartolo Colon in the past (2 for 3 with a homerun) and is hitting .313 at AT&T Park this season.
Additional Plays: Buster Posey

Pitcher Grind Down
- Blake Treinen – Treinen will get another chance as a starter today after having his last start skipped. He’s pitched admirably in both of his prior starts and posted a 1.96 ERA at AAA Syracuse this season. A matchup in Petco against the Padres is obviously a plus, so he’s in play today on multi-pitcher sites if you’re looking for some salary relief to fill out your rotation. Rating = 4.5
Salaries: $4200 FD, $12156 DS, $9900 DD, $5700 DK, $70000 FF, $13000 SS, $NA FTD
- Andrew Cashner – Cashner will return to the mound after spending the last three weeks on the disabled list with an elbow injury. He was dominant before suffering the injury, posting a 2.35 ERA through nine starts this season. He’s pitched light’s out at spacious Petco Park, racking up a 1.67 ERA in five starts. While this home matchup against Washington is tempting, he’ll likely be on a pitch count so it’s probably wise to wait to unleash in your lineups until he gets a fune tune-up starts under his belt. Rating = 6
Salaries: $8100 FD, $16732 DS, $15050 DD, $8300 DK, $88800 FF, $23000 SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
Washington
Jayson Werth – While I certainly don’t love hitters going against Cashner in Petco, it’s hard to ignore Werth’s success against the right hander. In six previous at bats against Cashner he’s gone 4 for 6 and also added a pair of walks.
Additional Plays: Adam LaRoche
San Diego
Targeting San Diego bats in Petco Field is rarely a recipe for fantasy success and i’ll be looking elsewhere tonight.

Pitcher Grind Down
- Ervin Santana – After a terrific start to 2014, Santana keeps seeing his ERA rise with each start lately. In his last four starts he sports a 7.83 ERA and 1.74 WHIP and has seen his strikeout rate dip considerably. He’ll take the mound tonight at the very hitter friendly Chase Field and, considering a relatively high asking price on most sites, I’ll be passing on him while he works through his struggles. Rating = 5
Salaries: $8200 FD, $19159 DS, $16150 DD, $8000 DK, $76600 FF, $22000 SS, $NA FTD
- Wade Miley – Miley has racked up 20 strikeouts in his last two starts, putting him into play on sites that weight strikeouts heavily. He’ll take on a Braves team that strikes out a lot which adds to his value a bit. He owns a 4.85 ERA and has really struggled at Chase Field this season (6.43 ERA) so he’s better served as a GPP option rather than in cash games. Rating = 5
Salaries: $6200 FD, $13336 DS, $13700 DD, $7000 DK, $71700 FF, $18500 SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
Atlanta
Justin Upton – To say Upton has been crushing left-handed pitching this season would be an understatement as he owns a .438 batting average and 1.602. Upton is 2 for 3 with a homerun off of Miley in the past.
- Additional Plays: Chris Johnson, Evan Gattis
Arizona
Miguel Montero – Lefties are hitting .297 off of Santana this season and Montero has caught fire. He’s had three hits in each of the last two games and homered in both. He’s batting .309 this season against right-handed pitching and is my favorite catching option on the board today.
Additional Plays: Paul Goldschmidt, Gerardo Parra
