Pitcher Grind Down
- Jose Fernandez – Fernandez is one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he is young and has had his struggles on the road. In his one road start this season, he gave up 6 earned runs to the Phillies. Last season he posted a 3.50 ERA on the road compared to his very impressive 1.19 ERA at home. I still think he carries value thanks to his K/9 of 9.8, but I will probably be avoiding him for cash games as there are other aces with better matchups. Rating = 7
- Alex Wood – You don’t see it very often, but Wood pitched a complete game loss in his last start. Wood has looked great this season with a 1.67 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. He has also struck out 24 batters in 27 innings of work. This Marlins offense has scored a lot of runs this season, but outside of Stanton, no one in this lineup worries me. Dollar for dollar, Wood offers much more value than Fernandez tonight. Rating = 7
Batter Grind Down
Miami
- Giancarlo Stanton – Stanton has been terrific for the Marlins this season and has always crushed LH pitching. Over the last 3 seasons he has an OPS over 1.00 against LH pitching.

Atlanta
- Even though I don’t love Fernandez on the road, I still don’t like taking hitters against him. The total in this game is set at 6.5 runs and there are better options elsewhere.

Pitcher Grind Down
- Masahiro Tanaka – I’m not even a Yankees’ fan and I still get excited every time I see Tanaka scheduled to pitch. Tanaka already has 28 K’s in his first 3 starts and has posted a very solid 2.08 ERA. Tonight will likely be his toughest test to date as he faces the Red Sox in Fenway in a classic Yankees/Red Sox rivalry game. For cash games, I would rather take a pitcher that is a bigger favorite, but Tanaka has as much upside as any starting pitcher tonight. Rating = 8
- Jon Lester – Lester has been a workhorse for the Red Sox this season. He is averaging 109 pitches per game and is off to an extremely nice start this season. He has a 2.17 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP and a K/9 of 9.0. Lester will not be a popular play tonight as he faces a Yankees lineup that has been heating up recently, but I think he carries great value as a sleeper tournament play. Rating = 7
Batter Grind Down
NY Yankees
- Alfonso Soriano – Soriano doesn’t have as much experience as Lester as some of the other Yankees’ batters, but he is very good against LH pitching. He has an OPS over .900 against LH pitching over the last 3 years and should be batting clean-up tonight in the hitter-friendly Fenway Park.
- Additional Plays: Carlos Beltran
Boston
- David Ortiz – If anyone is going to get a hold of a Tanaka pitch, it’s going to be Ortiz. Ortiz has 5 hits in his last 3 games and hit for a .931 OPS at home last season. He’s a better GPP play than a cash game play, but I do like Big Papi tonight.

Pitcher Grind Down
- Adam Wainwright – Wainwright in Citi Field seems like a no-brainer. Wainwright is off to a terrific start this season with a 1.80 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP. He also has 32 K’s over 30 innings of work. Tonight he faces a Mets offense that has trouble scoring runs at home. Citi Field yielded the 2nd fewest runs of any ballpark last season and Wainwright should be in for another terrific outing. Rating = 10
- Dillon Gee – Gee has pitched well at Citi Field over the years. Last season he posted a 2.47 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP in 15 starts at home. The problem with Gee is that he faces a tough Cardinals’ lineup tonight and he has Wainwrighht on the mound opposite him. He could get stuck with a loss even if he only gives up 1 run. Rating = 5
Batter Grind Down
St. Louis
- Matt Carpenter – Last season Gee gave up a .348 wOBA to LH batters and Carpenter is an on-base machine. He is very good against RH pitching (.306 average this season) and is a very safe play in cash games.

Pitcher Grind Down
- Kyle Gibson – Gibson has been impressive in his first 3 starts this season. He has a 0.93 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP this season. He comes into tonight’s game against the Rays as a +190 underdog though so he is not getting any love from Vegas. It’s extremely tough to target pitchers when they are expected to lose. I’ll pass on Gibson tonight. Rating = 3
- David Price – Price was a big disappointment in his last start. He has dominated the Yankees throughout the years, but they really roughed him up. Price just couldn’t seem to locate that “out” pitch and kept leaving his pitches over the heart of the plate. As DFS players, we have to be able to forget and move on and that’s exactly what we need to do tonight with Price. Price has a high K-rate, good splits at home, and is one of the biggest favorites on the schedule. Rating = 8
Batter Grind Down
Minnesota
- Chris Colabello – Colabello is more of a GPP play than a cash game play, but he continues to be under-priced across the industry and he continues to bat clean-up for a Twins’ offense that has scored the 4th most runs this season. Colabello is batting .375 against LH pitching this season.
- Additional Plays: None
Tampa Bay
- Matt Joyce – Last season Gibson gave up a .365 wOBA to LH batters. While Joyce can’t hit LH pitching, we don’t have to worry about that tonight. Joyce is batting .395 with a 1.17 OPS against RH pitching this season. He is one of the best values in the OF tonight.
- Additional Plays: Evan Longoria

Pitcher Grind Down
- Brandon McCarthy – McCarthy opened as a sizable underdog, but the line has moved and now this game is basically a pick ‘em. That said, I’m not a big fan of McCarthy. He has a 7.11 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP this season and has given up 20 earned runs in his first 4 starts this season. I’ll be avoiding him in all leagues tonight. Rating = 3
- Jason Hammel – Hammel has pitched very well this season. While he has a 3.04 ERA, his WHIP is sitting at 0.74 and he has struck out 16 batters over 20 innings of work. The matchup against the D-Backs isn’t great, but Hammel is the better play out of the two starters in this game. Ratong = 5
Batter Grind Down
Arizona
- Miguel Montero – Hammel gave up a .378 wOBA to LH batters last season and Montero is batting .277 with 5 XBH’s against RH pitching this season. Montero is one of the better punt plays at Catcher tonight.
- Additional Plays: Gerardo Parra
Chicago Cubs
- Anthony Rizzo – As predicted, the Cubs got a hold of Arroyo last night, but it wasn’t thanks to Rizzo who went 0/3 with 2 K’s. I like Rizzo again tonight though as he is great against RH pitching and McCarthy is giving up a .943 OPS to LH batters this season.
- Additional Plays: Starlin Castro
