MLB Player Props Today

Cal Quantrill u4.5 Strikeouts (-145), BetMGM

Entering play on Friday, Cal Quantrill owns a career-worst 12.4% strikeout rate this season. His inability to miss bats consistently has led to a career-worst 154 ERA- and 115 FIP-, 1.57 WHIP, and a dreadful .296 batting average allowed. In five rehab outings at the minor league level, Quantrill eclipsed this market number for strikeouts only once. Tonight, he will have to contend with a Tampa Bay Rays lineup that ranks 2nd in OPS, 5th in ISO, and near the league average in strikeout rate since Wander Franco last played on August 12. This could end up being an easy under this evening.

Carlos Rodon u5.5 Strikeouts (-136), FanDuel

Compared to his 2022 numbers, Carlos Rodon is allowing more contact on pitches inside and outside of the strike zone. He is generating fewer swings at pitches outside of the strike zone, less swings-and-misses, and fewer called strikes. Simply, he is not fooling anyone and is hurting himself even more by frequently falling behind early in the count to batters. Since August 15, the Houston Astros have struck out at the 8th-lowest rate of any team in the league against left-handed pitching. During that stretch, only one southpaw, Chris Sale, has managed more than five strikeouts against the Astros. The under is the clear lean here.

MLB DFS Pick’em

Kike Hernandez Less Than 0.5 Hitter Strikeouts, PrizePicks

Kike Hernandez is one of the best contact hitters in baseball against left-handed pitching, having struck out in only 10.8% of his plate appearances against southpaws in 2023. He draws a seemingly difficult matchup tonight against Max Fried, but Fried is not an overpowering left-hander. Instead, Fried relies on generating weak contact to get outs. Hernandez should be able to put the ball in play each time he steps in the box on Friday.
