NFL DFS Injury Summary: Reviewing Week 10

Injuries are a big part of daily fantasy sports on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo. NFL DFS requires us to know the status of every player, and it’s important that we keep tabs on them for a number of reasons. Each week in NFL DFS will undoubtedly bring new injuries to the forefront, and in this article we will look back and discuss how last week’s injuries will impact this week’s projections and projected ownership.

Let’s review the NFL DFS landscape and see who we will need to adjust for in the coming slates. All of the relevant injuries here will appear in our NFL DFS Injury Report each week.

Today’s NFL DFS Top Injury Report from Week 10

Drew Brees

NFL Team: New Orleans Saints
Position: QB
Injury Type: ribs
Next Week Status: questionable
Expected To Miss: TBD

Brees hurt his ribs in the first half, an injury that caused him to miss the entirety of the second half in the game against the 49ers. The Saints just so happen to be facing the Atlanta Falcons as they head in to Week 11, a team that has allowed the most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks.

If Brees is forced to miss this upcoming game against Atlanta, that should result in Jameis Winston taking over under center (Taysom Hill will still mix in for some snaps in certain packages, per usual, I’m assuming). Perhaps in anticipation of Brees potentially missing some time, the sites were quick to adjust Winston’s price tags though. He was $6,000 on FanDuel in Week 10, but he is priced up to $7,200 on their Week 11 main slate. The same goes for DraftKings, where he went from $5,100 in Week 10 to $5,900 in Week 11.

Regardless, matchup alone is going to bring Jameis into consideration if Brees is unable to go. The Saints may not let him sling it like he did in Tampa, but the salary is still cheap enough to where he can pay it off. Let’s see what the week brings us as it pertains to Brees’s ribs.

Chris Thompson

NFL Team: Jacksonville Jaguars
Position: RB
Injury Type: back
Next Week Status: questionable
Expected To Miss: TBD

Thompson’s availability for Week 11 is more fantasy-relevant for the Jaguars starting running back, James Robinson, than it is for Thompson himself.

If we look back to the last time Thompson missed a game (Week 7), Robinson saw 90% of the snaps. But if you look at Weeks 1-9—all games in which Thompson was available—Robinson saw just 62% of the snaps.

Fast forward to this past Sunday’s game against the Packers, in which Thompson left early in the first quarter and did not return. Robinson was the only running back to get a carry (23 of them, to be exact), and he also saw five targets (catching two of them). The only other running back to sniff any usage in that game was Dare Ogunbowale, the third running back on the depth chart, who caught one of his two targets.

The end result for Robinson in this game was 49.1% of the market share of opportunities. That was the second most he has seen all season. Which week was the highest, you ask? Week 7, when Thompson was out. Robinson saw a whopping 58% of the team’s opportunities in that game.

So as you can see, Thompson’s availability certainly matters to Robinson. So let’s keep an eye on Thompson’s status as the week progresses.

JaMycal Hasty

NFL Team: San Francisco 49ers
Position: RB
Injury Type: broken collarbone
Next Week Status: out
Expected To Miss: the rest of the season

Hasty broke his collarbone in yesterday’s game against the New Orleans Saints and will presumably be out for the remainder of the season.

From a fantasy football perspective, the initial instinct is to think that things will be cleared up at least a little bit in a San Francisco backfield that has been awfully hard to predict. With Hasty going down relatively early in the Saints game, Jerick McKinnon saw the bulk of the remaining workload. However, all of Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, and Jeff Wilson were inactive.

What will this backfield look like when the 49ers come out of their Week 11 bye? Apparently, Mostert and/or Coleman have a real shot at returning by Week 12. So even though the 49ers are down another man at running back, another one or two could be right back up. Which means this backfield could be just as big of a headache as previous games by the time Week 12 rolls around.
