NFL DFS Injury Summary: Reviewing Week 9

Injuries are a big part of daily fantasy sports on DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo. NFL DFS requires us to know the status of every player, and it’s important that we keep tabs on them for a number of reasons. Each week in NFL DFS will undoubtedly bring new injuries to the forefront, and in this article we will look back and discuss how last week’s injuries will impact this week’s projections and projected ownership.

Let’s review the NFL DFS landscape and see who we will need to adjust for in the coming slates. All of the relevant injuries here will appear in our NFL DFS Injury Report each week.

Today’s NFL DFS Top Injury Report from Week 9

Christian McCaffrey

NFL Team: Carolina Panthers
Position: RB
Injury Type: shoulder/collarbone
Next Week Status: doubtful
Expected To Miss: TBD

McCaffrey got banged up at the end of the game on Sunday. While it was initially thought to be a rib injury, there are reports that it might actually be a shoulder/collarbone issue.

This is obviously relevant for any type of fantasy football you play, as CMC is the best fantasy football asset in the game right now. Despite there being talk leading up to this game about some sort of 50/50 split for CMC and Mike Davis, CMC out-touched Davis 28 to 6 against the Chiefs.

Should this injury just be minor, CMC is priced below $10,000 on both FanDuel ($9,700) and DraftKings ($9,000) for Week 10 in a matchup against the Bucs. For comparison, he was $10,000 on DraftKings in Weeks 1 and 2.

If this injury forces CMC to miss some games though, it will be right back to Mike Davis we go. His price plummeted back down to the running back floor salary on DraftKings ($4,000), and he is only $5,400 on FanDuel. That is far too cheap despite a difficult matchup against the Bucs. And last night against the Bucs, the Saints showed just how little matchups matter sometimes!

David Johnson

NFL Team: Houston Texans
Position: RB
Injury Type: concussion
Next Week Status: questionable
Expected To Miss: TBD

Johnson left Sunday’s game relatively early with a concussion and did not return. It remains to be seen how much time he will miss, but he obviously needs to pass the league’s concussion protocol before he can return to action.

Duke Johnson would be the guy to target here if David has to miss Week 10’s game against the Browns. Against the Jags yesterday, Duke racked up 20 touches in David’s absence. While he was extremely inefficient with his rushes (16 carries for 41 yards), he was able to find the end zone once and (as always) contribute in the passing game (4 receptions, 32 yards). The end result was 13.3 FanDuel points and 16.3 DraftKings points.

We’ll want to keep an eye on David’s status heading into the weekend, as both Johnsons are cheap. David is $6,300 on FanDuel and $5,400 on DraftKings. Duke is $5,800 on FanDuel and $5,000 on DraftKings. If David is able to clear concussion protocol, he will be an appealing target once again. But if David is out, we should feel just fine about dropping down to Duke.

David Montgomery

NFL Team: Chicago Bears
Position: RB
Injury Type: concussion
Next Week Status: questionable
Expected To Miss: TBD

Unfortunately, another David got a concussion this past weekend, this one of the Montgomery variety. What to do if Montgomery misses isn’t as clear-cut as the situation we just discussed though.

For one, the Bears offense is utterly terrible. After Week 9, they are now averaging just 317.8 yards per game. There are just three teams behind them in that category: the Jets, Giants, and Washington Football Team. Yikes!

The other issue is, who is even the “next man up” in this backfield? Is it Cordarrelle Patterson? He is a converted wide receiver! Is it Ryan Nall? He didn’t even get a carry in his 13% of snaps yesterday (Patterson saw 22% of the snaps), but he did catch all four of his targets for 35 yards and a score. And don’t forget, Lamar Miller is on their practice squad too!

On tap for Week 10 is a matchup against the Vikings on Monday Night Football. So if Montgomery does end up missing some time, we will not have to deal with this headache on the main slates this weekend.
