In a closer match than most anticipated, the Sharks did pick up two points with an overtime win over the Avalanche in the first half of this home-and-home series. Tonight, the scene shifts to the Pepsi Center in Denver, but that likely won’t scare many users away from targeting San Jose once again. Colorado is not only the worst team in the NHL from a points perspective (28 points), but they’ve also allowed an NHL worst 3.34 goals against per game. Offensively, the top line of Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Patrick Marleau will likely be rather popular. Pavelski has proven to be the most dangerous weapon of those three and has posted 16 goals and 25 assists in 47 games this season. Logan Couture joins those three forwards on San Jose’s lethal #1 power-play unit he’s picked up points in each of the last two games. He’s one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL and elevates the play of his linemates Joonas Donskoi and Mikkel Boedker. With all of that said, Brent Burns has established himself as the most dangerous fantasy producer on this team. He leads the team with 19 goals and 28 assists in 47 games and his 182 shots on goal is the highest total in the entire league. Burns is expensive everywhere, but Colorado’s poor defense and ugly 78.4% penalty kill lock him in as one of the top options on the board. If you can’t find a way to get Burns into your lineups, both Marc-Edouard Vlasic and David Schlemko are in play this evening as well. They don’t have anywhere near the same offensive upside, but both players do see a healthy dose of playing time on the point of the #2 power-play unit and also offer a consistent streak of blocked shots.
As I hinted at above, the Colorado Avalanche have had a disastrous season and targeting them in DFS hockey hasn’t worked out well very often this season. They’ve now dropped five straight games and own a terrible 4-20-2 record over their last 26 games. Throw in the fact that they’re the NHL’s lowest scoring team (2.02 goals per game) and there’s just not much to like here with 11 other teams to choose from. The duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene have been responsible for a disproportionate amount of Colorado’s offense this season and that makes them both viable GPP plays. On defense, Tyson Barrie holds the reigns as the quarterback of the #1 power-play unit and has posted 23 points in 42 games. He’s also thrown 105 shots on net this season which provides him with a decent floor if you’re looking for a contrarian play on the blue-line.
