Senators Offensive Outlook
5v5 (adj) (22 games): 55.04 CF/60 (21) | 60.32 CA/60 (7) | 2 xGF/60 (25) | 2.14 xGA/60 (25)
The Senators kick off a long road trip while in poor form, and start off with a tough matchup against the Habs. Ottawa’s offensive numbers are not great, but there is some optimism in DFS if Guy Boucher actually optimizes his lineup a bit. That means getting Mike Hoffman off the third line, for starters, and maybe giving Matt Duchene a better wing.
Lo and behold, what do we have here: A top line of Mike Hoffman, Matt Duchene, and Mark Stone?! Even in a tougher matchup such as this, this line has some intrigue. This could be a lethal line as all three forward are strong scorers, and Duchene led a high-end possession line in Colorado to start the year. Montreal shouldn’t be confused for a shutdown team, and though Carey Price has come back from injury in top form, there is serious contrarian appeal here. This is especially true with Price likely to garner high ownership.
The stacking of the top line does take away the viability of the remaining forwards. The system isn’t conducive to offense, and Derick Brassard centering Bobby Ryan and Zack Smith isn’t all that exciting in this matchup.
Erik Karlsson hasn’t found the boxscore in six straight games, so it’s getting close to zero hour for buying low. His price is below $7k on FanDuel and he makes an enticing play with the talented top line (for price shoppers, Matt Duchene is only $4,800 on FD).
Senators Special Teams Outlook
Much like they are wont to do at 5v5, the Senators tend to take a high volume of shot attempts but tend to struggle taking them from high-danger areas. Scoring chances generated are also unimpressive. It’s an exploitable matchup if the Ottawa group can rise to the occasion, as the Montreal penalty kill has struggled to suppress shot attempts and high-danger shot attempts. The opportunity for Ottawa to somehow find a way to take advantage enhances their contrarian appeal tonight.
