How the Chiefs and 49ers got to Super Bowl 2020

Before the season started, the Kansas City Chiefs were +750 co-favorites with the New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl. Though their odds fell to as low as +1500 after losing to the Titans in Week 10 — their fourth and final loss of the regular season — it’s not exactly a surprise that the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are heading to Miami for Super Bowl 2020.

The 49ers, on the other hand, weren’t on NFL bettors’ Super Bowl radar before the 2019-20 NFL season kicked off. We expected the 49ers to improve a year after finishing 4-12. This year would be different with their franchise quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, fully recovered from ACL surgery, but alarming reports in training camp that Garoppolo was struggling against the 49ers defense — including three consecutive interceptions in a single practice — quickly tempered expectations.

Now we know why Garoppolo was struggling. In practice, he was facing arguably the best defense in the NFL

Still, skepticism increased as Garoppolo completed only one of six passes in his first taste of preseason action following his 2018 injury. At +4500 odds, no one took the 49ers as serious Super Bowl contenders.

In hindsight, Garoppolo’s 2018 injury actually played a major roll in 49ers’ road to Super Bowl LIV.

The 49ers are the third team to reach the Super Bowl after having a top two draft pick from the previous season’s draft. How did the 49ers general manager, John Lynch, use that pick? He drafted none other than Nick Bosa, who contributed nine sacks and 47 tackles in his rookie season. Bosa already has three sacks in the 2020 NFL Playoffs, but the 49ers will need him to add a couple more in the Super Bowl if they want to slow down Mahomes.

Super Bowl 2020 Matchup: Chiefs vs. 49ers

Ultimately, the Chiefs used the league’s best offense to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl while the 49ers used the league’s best defense and a tough running game to punch theirs.

This was true in the regular season and held true in the playoffs. Just look at the stats: Mahomes is the first player in NFL playoff history to have least 250 passing yards a 50 rushing yards in consecutive games. In the NFC Championship game against the Packers, Garappolo tied for the third-fewest pass attempts in a playoff win during the Super Bowl era. Combined, he’s thrown for only 208 yards in the 49ers’ two playoff games.

Neither trend is likely to continue. 24-year-old Mahomes will have his toughest test yet against Bosa and the 49ers’ pass rush. Like the Titans and Ryan Tannehill, Garappolo will most certainly have to pass more than just eight times as the 49ers will have a different game script to keep up with the Chiefs offense despite how impressive their defense has been.

All in all, it’s an intriguing Super Bowl matchup that will have Andy Reid, one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NFL, and Kyle Shanahan, one of the youngest rising stars, playing chess with each other as they compete for their first Lombardi Trophy.

I’ve been on record saying I like the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl when they were +1200, and even went as far as suggesting betting on guys like Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and Damien Williams to win Super Bowl MVP leading up to the playoffs.

Now might be a good time to hedge by betting on the 49ers point spread or moneyline if you grabbed a good futures number on the Chiefs earlier, but I still think the Chiefs will be the best team in Miami on February 2. Kansas City’s defense has steadily gotten healthier and better throughout the year, and the three-headed offensive monster made up of Mahomes, Hill and Kelce will be too much for the 49ers to overcome.
