Offense versus defense. The unstoppable force versus the immovable object. After winning their respective conference championship games, the Chiefs and 49ers will meet in Super Bowl 54 to test an age-old cliche in sports lore. Bookmakers quickly released a line and, despite nearly thirteen days, not much has changed. With a projected high-scoring affair, Super Bowl 54 figures to be a fun game to wager on and watch. The unstoppable force, the Chiefs’ offense, jumped into the playoffs at a break-neck pace. With nearly 300 more passing yards and over 50 yards of rushing, Patrick Mahomes starred in the AFC Championship game versus the Titans. In what could be an iconic moment if the Chiefs finish off a championship run, Mahomes broke off a 27-yard scamper for a touchdown to take the lead before halftime. The Chiefs never looked back. Mahomes will be a massively owned captain selection in daily fantasy contests for the Super Bowl.

The immovable object, the 49ers’ defense, did enough to keep the pressure on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Rodgers did throw for over 300 yards but was sacked three times and forced to throw two interceptions. An early lead played right into the hands of the 49ers and Raheem Mostert saw a bulk of the work with Tevin Coleman ailing after an ugly shoulder injury. Mostert became the only player in NFL history to have 200 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a single game. Seemingly impossible to stop, Kyle Shanahan kept with the running game as Jimmy Garoppolo only attempted eight passes. If the 49ers were able to repeat a similar performance in the Super Bowl, Raheem Mostert might go under the radar as a captain or MVP option on DFS sites.

An implied total that climbed all the way to 54.5 points suggests the 49ers will need to throw more than eight times to beat the Chiefs. Even with a dominating defense, the Chiefs’ offense is stacked with so many weapons and led by a quarterback brimming with plenty of confidence after two historic performances. A less-discussed factor in the game is the form the Kansas City defense brings to Miami — most recently bottling up Derrick Henry despite a relatively close game script into the third quarter. The Chiefs might not possess the firepower on the defensive line but own 8 sacks over the course of their two playoff victories.

Without much movement, at all, in the betting line across betting sites, bettors can take the side of their preference. Admittedly, I am hoping for some movement towards the 49ers due to my upcoming pick but don’t feel that is likely so close to kickoff.

Hold on to your hats! This should be a memorable Super Bowl and a true test of the cliche offense versus defense assumptions made by sports fans across the country.

Super Bowl 54 Betting Picks — Chiefs vs. 49ers

My esteemed colleague, Matt Schmitto, made a great point in his Three Tips for Betting the Super Bowl when mentioning that, considering how efficient Super Bowl betting lines are, one should bet on an outcome they hope for. I am rooting for Andy Reid and the Chiefs. When the lines were initially posted on DraftKings Sportsbook, I was able to make a bet on the Chiefs at this number. Since nothing has changed, I see no reason to change my stance. Give me the Chiefs in the first Super Bowl victory for Andy Reid.

The Pick: Kansas City Chiefs -1.5 (-110)
