Dolphins vs. Jaguars TNF Betting Preview

Update – WR DJ Chark is now ruled out of Thursday Night’s game.

Thursday Night Football continues to be a haven for true die-hard football fans as the NFL Network will host a real barnburner between the lowly Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Without question, the NFL is leveraging the charisma and drawing power of Garnder Minshew and his mustache… and, of course, the wide interest of sports bettors. Surely, that is why you are here.

The Jaguars upset the Colts in Week 1 behind the efforts of Gardner Minshew and company and came up a bit short against the Tennessee Titans in overtime in Week 2. While Minshew captures the headlines, the Jaguars are featuring a new player in the backfield after the departure of Leonard FournetteJames Robinson. Robinson boasts 32 carries for 164 yards and a rushing touchdown in the early stages of his career. The rookie added a few catches on four targets and seems to be the lead man in the backfield, for now. The running game assists Jacksonville with slowing the pace of play — averaging only 60.5 plays per game and barely 30 minutes of possession in 2020.

The Jaguars offense will be without guard Brandon Linder but should have DJ Chark despite being marked questionable. Chark got in two limited practices early in the week and will see a matchup upgrade with the Dolphins corner Byron Jones missing the Thursday Night contest due to an injured groin. Chark only possesses 7 targets this season but has converted all of them for 109 yards. Chark is a big play waiting to happen and represents an intriguing Captain option for Thursday Night DFS contests.

The Dolphins offense will be running on all cylinders. Whether or not those cylinders are enough to claim victory remains to be seen. The Dolphins backfield is crowded with Myles Gaskin, Matt Breida, and Jordan Howard all receiving a similar number of carries through two weeks. Gaskin seems to be staking his claim as the top dog at halfback after receiving seven targets in Week 2. The wide receiving corps for the Dolphins opens the season as a two-headed monster — Preston Williams and DeVante Parker both claiming north of 20% of the targets.

In Week 2, Mike Gesicki emerged as the potential favorite target of Ryan Fitzpatrick — seeing 11 targets and converting for 8 receptions, 130 yards, and a touchdown. Gesicki will draw a very winnable matchup after the Jaguars’ defense was shredded by Jonnu Smith for 84 yards and two scores. Temper expectations on Ryan Fitzpatrick in this game, as the Jaguars slow pace will limit Fitzy’s opportunities on the road.

Thursday Night Football Betting Picks

The Dolphins’ defense remains abysmal in 2020, allowing 5.0 yards per rushing attempt and a generous 10.2 yards per pass attempt. Gardner Minshew and company will want to control the pace of play and will likely leverage the strong early returns from the running game to keep Fitz and his corps off the field. Add a few big plays from the Jacksonville pass catchers and the Dolphins could be for a long night on the road.

At the time of this writing, the three-point spread represents a missed opportunity as the line opened at -2. Before the Jaguars get bet to 3.5 points, I will jump on the three-point spread. I will take the home team to cover three points at PointsBet Sportsbook.
