HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Early Slate Thoughts

We have eight early games and seven games on the main slate tonight, so it’s a nice little divided day of action for our 4th of July festivities. The nice thing about all the early action is there is literally no pitching that interests me much at all until we get to Quintana with the Cubs, but he also is super risky and a guy I never seem to roster. Detroit has the ability to pound left-handed pitching at times and Quintana is actually a pretty high price as well, so it makes even more sense to fade him.

At the top of the ranks today we have Jose Berrios and Aaron Nola, both of whom are barely over $50 so it would be possible to play both with a bunch of value guys. They are clearly the top arms of the slate without a doubt and the slate is so weak on pitching that it gives them an even bigger edge in that direction. Nola has been one of the most consistent guys in all of baseball and Baltimore has been one of the best teams in baseball to pick on so this lines up perfectly for what we would want in a SP1, so I am very confident to just lock him in all teams and that security he brings to the fold. Then Berrios is an incredible option for SP2 as well if we can make the pricing work, but let’s just assume we can’t for a minute and look for a cheaper SP2 to give another route. Chase Anderson is basically a coin flip spread against Berrios and for $13 less dollars which makes a lot of sense. Berrios obviously has more K upside, but with the savings we would be able to jam in a bunch more offensively. Mike Leake is another nice savings at $40, but the Angels are a very tough matchup and don’t ever strikeout, so it could be a tough spot for him. Sean Manaea for $42 against a Padres team everyone likes to pick on is going to be the chalk spot along with Quintana I believe and I would much prefer Manaea although I don’t like him near as much as the field will. The Padres are a team I absolutely love to play a sneaky stack against left handed pitching because of how much better they are in that direction.
