The NBA’s mid-season festivities will wrap-up on Sunday evening with the 74th annual NBA All-Star Game. New this year, there will be 4 separate All-Star teams as part of a re-imagined event to showcase the league’s best and brightest talent.
Below, we take an in-depth look at the new format, rosters, and more ahead of tip-off!
All-Star Game Format
In 2025, the NBA will be debuting a mini-tournament for All-Star Sunday, featuring 4 teams and 3 games. There will be a pair of semifinal matchups, with the winner of each of those contests advancing to face each other in the championship – the 3rd and final game of the evening.
Rather than traditionally timed quarters, each matchup will feature a target score to determine a winner, with the first team to reach or surpass 40 points ending the game.

Betting Tips
This is the first time that the NBA has ever used a mini-tournament for Sunday’s All-Star Game, so there is obviously not much precedent here to analyze how the night may unfold. That being said, the new format is likely to be more competitive than the traditionally timed quarters that we have seen in recent seasons.
Prior to last year, the NBA had a multi-year run of using an untimed 4th quarter, where a target score determined the winner rather than the clock hitting triple-zero. In 2020, the target score led to players saying it was “the best All-Star Game ever” and that “guys competed… it was a lot of fun.” The game went down to the wire in 2022 as well, with both teams clearly locking in on the defensive end of the floor late in the contest and trying to win.
We may not see teams be 100% committed to getting stops for the entire game on Sunday, but we should see defensive intensity increase as teams get closer to the target score of 40 points. Thus, talent should matter more this year than it did in the previous format, which often had a random outcome based on who could make more long-range shots.
The Rising Stars will be good for marketing, but it’s difficult to see a team full of future Hall-of-Famers allowing themselves to lose to rookies and sophomores in this event. Expect to see Team Shaq (OGs) in the championship game this evening. I will have a full betting breakdown of tonight’s action in another article later this afternoon!
