Pitcher Grind Down
- Josh Tomlin – Tomlin has pitched well this season with a 2.91 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP. He is not a high strikeout pitcher though and he has a tough matchup today against the White Sox who are ranked 8th against RH pitching with a team .329 wOBA. Rating = 4
Salaries: $4500 FD, $10695 DS, $12450 DD, $8700 DK, $85800 FF, $21200 SS, $9500 FTD
- Jose Quintana – Quintana is a pitcher that you can target when the matchup is right. On the season he has a 3.67 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and a K/9 of 7.2. Today he faces an Indians’ offense that is ranked 28th against LH pitching this season with a team .292 wOBA. He’s the preferred option of the two starters in this game and is in play on multi-pitcher sites. Rating = 6
Salaries: $5900 FD, $12835 DS, $11900 DD, $8000 DK, $82700 FF, $19900 SS, $11600 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Cleveland
Ryan Raburn – Raburn was the Indians’ special weapon against LH pitching last season and even though he is off to a slow start in 2014, he has 8 hits over his last 8 starts. His price is close to minimum salary across the industry and he will be batting in the heart of the order against the LHP Quintana.
Additional Plays: Asdrubal Cabrera, Carlos Santana
Chicago White Sox
Alexei Ramirez – Alexei continues to mash RH pitching this season. He’s batting .342 against righties with an OPS of .900. He has decent power (7 HR’s) and decent speed (9 SB’s).
Additional Plays: Adam Eaton

Pitcher Grind Down
- Jeff Samardzija – Samardzija has been incredible on the bump this season, but has yet to get a win. At this pace, he could be the only Cy Young candidate with 0 wins on his resume at the end of the season. All jokes aside, I like him once again today. He is facing a Giants offense that is average against RH pitching this season and he gets to face them in the pitcher friendly AT&T Park. Rating = 7
Salaries: $8000 FD, $18177 DS, $17750 DD, $9500 DK, $104600 FF, $24300 SS, $13400 FTD
- Yusmeiro Petit – Petit has pitched well at home with a 2.29 ERA and 18 K’s over 19 innings of work. Petit is cheap across the industry and is actually a nice play on multi pitcher sites. The Cubs are ranked 27th against RH pitching this season with a team .286 wOBA. Rating = 6
Salaries: $5600 FD, $ DS, $9850 DD, $7600 DK, $ FF, $15200 SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
Chicago Cubs
Anthony Rizzo – This will likely be a very low scoring game, but Rizzo has a decent matchup as the RHP Petit has given up a .372 wOBA to LH batters this season. Rizzo has nice power and makes a good tournament play that will likely have a low % of ownership.
Additional Plays: Luis Valbuena
San Francisco
Samardzija has held LH and RH batters under a .300 wOBA this season. With the way he is pitching, I will not be suggesting any batters against him.

Pitcher Grind Down
- Drew Smyly – Smyly has pitched well this season. In 9 appearances, he has posted a 2.97 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP and a K/9 of 8.5. While his high K-rate gives him nice upside, he draws an extremely tough matchup against the A’s who are always a tough matchup for pitchers. Rating = 4
Salaries: $6900 FD, $13333 DS, $12400 DD, $6900 DK, $61000 FF, $15500 SS, $NA FTD
- Tommy Milone – Milone has pitched well in each of his last 3 starts and is pitching at home where he has posted a 1.80 ERA while striking out 12 batters in 20 innings of work this season. The issue here is that he is facing a Tigers’ offense that is ranked 4th against LH pitching with a team .338 wOBA. Rating = 5
Salaries: $5500 FD, $12789 DS, $10450 DD, $7600 DK, $82100 FF, $19000 SS, $10600 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Detroit
Miguel Cabrera – Miggy’s numbers against LH pitching have been down this season, but it’s only a matter of time before that changes. Last season he hit for a .368 average and an OPS of 1.21 against southpaws. He’s the top 1B option today if you can afford him.
Additional Plays: Torii Hunter, Ian Kinsler
Oakland
Yoenis Cespedes – Even though Cespedes is only batting .238 against LH pitching this season, he has great power against southpaws as he has an OPS of .833 this season. His price is affordable across the industry and Quintana has given up a .358 wOBA to RH batters this season.
Additional Plays: Derek Norris, Josh Donaldson, Coco Crisp

Pitcher Grind Down
- Tyler Skaggs – Skaggs has had quite a few quality starts this season, but he has some awful starts mixed in as well. On the season he is sporting a 4.14 ERA with a K/9 of 6.1. He has a favorable matchup against the Mariners whose lineup is littered with LHB’s. Rating = 5
Salaries: $6300 FD, $14389 DS, $13250 DD, $7900 DK, $76800 FF, $20800 SS, $11600 FTD
- Chris Young – Young has given up 9 earned runs in his last 2 starts and lacks the upside needed to be a viable pitching option. He has only struck out 19 batters in 51 innings pitched this season and should be avoided against the Angels who are ranked 9th against RH pitching this season. Rating = 3
Salaries: $5400 FD, $6895 DS, $11600 DD, $5800 DK, $71500 FF, $13600 SS, $10200 FTD
Batter Grind Down
LA Angels
Albert Pujols – Pujols has an OPS of .870 against RH pitching this season and a nice matchup against Young who does not strike out many batters. Young is giving up a .311 wOBA to RHB’s this season.
Additional Plays: Erick Aybar
Seattle
Robinson Cano – Even though Skaggs is a LHP, he has given up a much higher wOBA (.346) and OPS (.766) to LHB’s than he has to RHB’s. Cano is a lefty that hits LH pitching well and he is swinging a hot back with 12 hits over his last 6 games.
Additional Plays: Kyle Seager, Mike Zunino

Pitcher Grind Down
- Chase Whitley – Whitley has yet to make it 5 innings in any big-league start which really limits his upside. Granted, it has only been 2 starts, but I’d like to see him pitch deeper into games before targeting him. Whitley is one of the bigger underdogs on the schedule today and can safely be avoided in all leagues. Rating = 3
Salaries: $3000 FD, $9124 DS, $11000 DD, $7000 DK, $64000 FF, $16100 SS, $9500 FTD
- Michael Wacha – Wacha owns a 2.54 ERA on the season with a 1.15 WHIP and an impressive K/9 of 9.9. The Yankees have been pretty good against RH pitching this season with a team .313 wOBA, but Wacha’s upside puts him in play in all leagues. Rating = 8
Salaries: $8700 FD, $17809 DS, $16900 DD, $10600 DK, $116500 FF, $25600 SS, $15800 FTD
Batter Grind Down
NY Yankees
Wacha has held both LH and RH batters under a .290 wOBA this season. There are better matchups that you can exploit instead of targeting the Yankees.
St. Louis
Allen Craig – Craig is my favorite value play across the board today. He has a nice matchup against the rookie Whitley and he has 9 hits in his last 5 games. It’s a great time to buy low on Craig before his price goes up.
Additional Plays: Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter
