Pitcher Grind Down
- Wade Miley – Miley’s numbers so far in 2014 are not impressive, however he has pitched respectably away from the very hitter friendly Chase Field (3.12 road ERA). Miley won’t have the luxury of facing an opposing pitcher as this game is in an AL ballpark but, on the plus side, the Whitesox do lead MLB in strikeouts so far this season. Rating = 5.5
- Jose Quintana – Quintana made things look easy in his last outing, holding the Cubs to just one hit over 7 innings. He’s been prone to occassional blow-ups in his short career but amassed a very solid 6-5 record with a 3.33 ERA last season at U.S. Cellular Field (and has been sensational there so far this season). If he can avoid damage from the few lefty killers in the D-Backs lineup than he’ll have another strong performance. Rating = 6
Batter Grind Down
Arizona
Paul Goldschmidt – It’t not a secret that Goldie hammers left-handed pitching, as he’s posted a .367 batting average against them so far this season. Prior to being held hitless last night, Goldschmidt had racked up a nine game hitting streak that saw him hit .450 with four homeruns.
- Additional Plays: Aaron Hill, Cody Ross
Chicago
Jose Abreu – Abreu just keeps rolling, going 3 for 4 last night and smacked his 13th homerun of the season. He’s been particularly solid at U.S. Cellular Field so far this season, where he owns a .320 batting average and 1.052 OPS.
- Additional Plays: Dayan Viciedo

Pitcher Grind Down
- Jon Lester – As soon as I was starting to doubt Lester a bit, he pulled me back in with an insane outing against Oakland his last time on the mound (8 IP, 1 hit, 2 walks, 15 K’s). He’s been locked in since last year’s all-star break, posting a 10-6 record with a 2.57 ERA and nearly a strikeout per inning in 20 starts. The matchup is not ideal here, but he’s still in play tonight. Rating = 6
- Martin Perez – After a three game stretch of being nearly unhittable, Perez’ fortunes have certainly changed in his last two outings; allowing 13 earned runs in just 9.2 innings. The Red Sox are not the team you want to face when you’re struggling and Perez is just too hard to trust in cash games tonight. Rating = 5
Batter Grind Down
Boston
Dustin Pedroia – Pedroia has a long history of success against left-handed pitching. He posted a .354 batting average against southpaws last season. He’s a consistent performer, having recorded at least one hit in 16 of the last 19 games.
- Additional Plays: Xander Bogaerts, Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli
Texas
Adrian Beltre – Beltre has been heating up lately and has a nice track record of success versus left-handed pitching (.945 OPS since the beginning of 2013). He’s also 9 for 25 with a longball in his previous battles with Lester.
- Additional Plays: Alex Rios

Pitcher Grind Down
- Nate Eovaldi – Facing the Padres has become fantasy gold this season (except for last night), and Eovaldi is tasked with the honor tonight. He’s armed with a fastball that can reach the upper 90’s and fanned 10 batters in his last start. With a 2.78 ERA, .99 WHIP and a strikeout per inning so far in 2014, he’s one of the best pitching options on the board. Rating = 8
- Eric Stultz – Pitching in Petco Park is nice, but Stultz has been rather awful lately. In his last three starts he’s allowed 28 hits in just 12.2 innings and has only fanned 6 batters over that span. The Marlns have a number of player who enjoy facing left-handed pitching and Stultz is only in play if he’s dirt cheap. Rating = 4
Batter Grind Down
Miami
Giancarlo Stanton – Right handed batters have roughed Stultz up a bit since the beginning of last season (.301 average in 2013 and .369 so far this season). Stanton is a notorious lefty-crusher and already owns a homerun against Stultz in just four prior AB’s.
- Additional Plays: Jeff Baker, Reed Johnson, Marcell Ozuna
San Diego
Eovaldi has been impressive this season and these San Diego bats have been ice-cold. Look elsewhere.

Pitcher Grind Down
- Tanner Roark – Roark had one of his only rough starts of his career in his last trip to the bump; getting smacked for 7 earned runs in just four innings against the Phillies. He has really struggled on the road this season (7.29 ERA) and Oakland is not an easy task. He’s still a viable option for as a higher-risk option in GPP’s, but i’ll be looking elsewhere in cash games. Rating = 5
- Sonny Gray – Gray is one of my favorite up-and-coming pitchers in MLB this year and he’s off to a terrific start. Through seven starts, he’s amassed a 4-1 record, 1.91 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 40 K’s in 47 innings. He’s had to deal with the Rangers twice and the Red Sox in Fenway in his last three starts and has been impressive in each game. Rating = 7
Batter Grind Down
Washington
Adam LaRoche – LaRoche has been great so far this season, owning an impressive .421 OBP. He has really punished right handed pitching, posting a .326 batting average and .972 OPS.
Oakland
Brandon Moss – Moss is a solid option against right-handed pitching and seems to be heating up once again. He homered last night and posted a .905 OPS versus righties last season.
- Additional Plays: Josh Donaldson

Pitcher Grind Down
- Yordano Ventura – Armed with an upper 90’s fastball and a decent #2 curveball, Ventura has been impressive in his rookie season. Through six starts, he owns a 2.00 ERA and 41 strikeouts through just 36 innings. He’s been a bit hit-or-miss with his control and his pitch count has suffered when it’s been spotty, but he should have another strong outing tonight in spacious Safeco Field. Rating = 7
- Chris Young – Young looks to have turned the clock back to 2007 as he’s revitalized his career so far in 2014. Through his first six starts he owns a 2-0 record with a 3.03 ERA. However, he struggles to reach the mid 80’s with his fastball and this seasons .193 BABIP will soon correct itself. He won’t get you many strikeouts and his ceiling is too low for me to really consider for either GPP’s or cash games. Rating = 3.5
Batter Grind Down
Kansas City
Eric Hosmer – Hosmer is locked in right now, racking up 12 hits during his current five game hitting streak. He handles the bat very well against right handed pitching (.343 batting average this year) and is still reasonably priced on most sites.
Seattle
Robinson Cano – Cano’s had a bit of a disappointing start to the season, but has shown signs of life lately as he has hits in seven of the last eight games. He’s always a solid option at 2B when facing a right handed pitcher.
