The New York Jets host the New England Patriots in what will be Sam Darnold second game back after missing three weeks with mononucleosis. It can’t be stated enough how much the Jets missed Darnold, who closed his rookie season leading the NFL in QBR weeks 14-17. In Darnold’s return, the Jets looked look a completely different team, beating the Dallas Cowboys 24-22. The game itself wasn’t as close as the score was, and the second-year quarterback dominated with 338 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Monday will be his toughest test yet, facing a New England Patriots defense that hasn’t allowed more than one offensive touchdown in a game all season. It’s a defense that leads the NFL in yards allowed per game, points allowed, takeaways, and third-down defense. It’s worth noting that this healthy Jets offense will be New England’s most formidable opponent since shutting down Pittsburgh in Week 1. Following the Steelers, New England’s competition has consisted of the Dolphins, the Darnold-less Jets, Bills, Redskins, and Giants.

Without Darnold, the Patriots defeated the Jets 30-14 in their Week 3 meeting. With Darnold and at MetLife Stadium, I’m expecting a much more competitive result this time around. Unfortunately, the Jets will likely be without TE Chris Herndon as his return continues to be delayed.

But Sam Darnold isn’t the only quarterback missing weapons. Josh Gordon will be inactive Monday night while Julian Edelman and Phillip Dorsett are both questionable. Additionally, Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse are out, meaning Benjamin Watson could end up the team’s top pass-catching tight end. Expect James White to be leaned on heavily in the short passing game. For that reason, White is my favorite DFS play on tonight’s showdown contests. Create a DraftKings DFS account and get 1 month of RG Premium for free.

The Monday Night Football Pick

Points won’t come easy for the Patriots, especially without some of their top pass catchers. The Jets are shutting down running backs to a 38.30% rush success rate according to RotoGrinders Premium Gridiron IQ tool. The Patriots are undefeated and the defense has been dominant, but they’ve faced little competition. I believe in Darnold and I think the Jets can keep this game within a touchdown, so I’m happy to take the 9.5 points Monday night.

My Pick: Jets +9.5
