Week In Bad Beats: Zion's Early Exit, Under Radar Half Court Heave

Every week on Mondays, we’ll recap the worst beats in sports betting  from the previous calendar week. This week, Zion Williamson’s sneaker blow out doomed Duke backers and a one of the worst beats of the college basketball season.

North Carolina 88 Duke 72

Line: Duke -9

Not every bad beat happens at the end of the game. Sometimes an early injury can doom bettors and that was the case last Wednesday.

Bettors on Duke -9 were 30 seconds into the game when superstar Zion Williamson, planted his foot, blew out his Nikes, and sprained his knee. Zion would leave the game and not return. Duke never challenged the Tar Heels as North Carolina led wire to wire in the 16-point blowout.

There’s no telling what would have happened if Zion not been injured. North Carolina played well and might have still covered and won. However, if you’re laying nine points with Duke over UNC, it’s with the expectation the best player in college basketball will be on the floor. Once Zion left with the injury, the air went out of the Blue Devils, and Duke covering nine points was never a reality.

Davidson Wildcats 36, Rhode Island Rams 27 (Halftime)

Line: First Half Total 61

There probably wasn’t a lot of people holding Davidson-Rhode Island Under first half tickets, but for the those holding Under 61, they experienced a bad beat that will haunt them for years.

What if I told you the two teams had combined for 57 points with seven seconds left in the half? Under bettors would need something crazy to happen to lose that bet, right? Well, it happened.

Rhode Island nailed a three-pointer to make the score 33-27 with four seconds left in the half. Davidson in-bounded the ball with time for only a desperation heave. Then this happened…

Jon Axel Gudmundsson’s three from beyond half court sunk under bettors. It may not have been a high-profile game or wager but that’s one of the toughest losses bettors have taken all college basketball season.

Philadelphia 76ers 106, Miami Heat 102

Line: 76ers -5.5

The bad beats weren’t exclusive to college basketball. On Thursday the NBA had a buzzer beater that sent some bettors home happy, while others were on the wrong end of a Dion Waiters last second bomb.

Philadelphia led 105-99 and Sixers -5.5 bettors were holding on by a thread. With 10.5 seconds remaining, the Heat had possession with one last shot to cover the spread. Waiters took the in-bounds pass and unleashed a three form the top of the key. Bang!

The majority of the tickets were on the Sixers that night. Waiters’ three was good for the books but not so much for all the bettors laying 5.5 with Philadelphia.
