Daily Pitcher Breakdown: April 25th, 2013
In this article I’ll break down in-depth starting pitcher stats and color code them so you can see which players you should be targeting and avoiding today based on some sabermetrics and other stats that I have created based on studying the starting pitcher position.

_The Notes portion is now going to contain the pitcher’s 2013 Talent. Samples are still small so things haven’t necessarily stabilized, but seeing their core skills to date is something worth looking at this point. ERAs and WHIPs can still be wacky and insanely skewed by one outing – whether great or awful – so we’ll leave the 2013 Performance on the shelf for a little while longer. _
Phil Humber
- 9% K, 6% BB, 0.95 HR/9, 1.29 G/F in 19 IP
- No Red Sox player has more 9 PA against Humber.
- Jarrod Saltalamacchia has crushed him though with a 3-for-8 mark including a double and two homers.
- Mike Napoli also has a homer against him in his 4 PA.
Clay Buchholz

- 25% K, 10% BB, 0.30 HR/9, 1.55 G/F in 30 IP
- With the Astros having been an NL team until this year, Buchholz has limited experience against them.
- In fact, 36 of his 39 PA v. the Astros are tied up in Carlos Pena (.182 AVG, 553 OPS) who has a homer in his six hits.
Bronson Arroyo
- 15% K, 3% BB, 0.64 HR/9, 1.16 G/F in 28 IP
- Though Arroyo has always struggled with homers, only two current Nats have one against him: Adam * LaRoche and Dan Haren (yes, the pitcher).
- This might be the day for Washington to give one of their stud outfielders a breather for Roger Bernadina who has a .700 AVG and 1567 OPS against Arroyo in 12 PA (7-for-10, 1 BB, 1 SF).
- LaRoche hasn’t done much else besides his homer with a .172 AVG and 583 OPS.
Gio Gonzalez
- 23% K, 13% BB, 0.90 HR/9, 2.00 G/F in 20 IP
- Given to their AL days, Shin-Soo Choo has the most work vs. Gio with 16 PA (.333 AVG, 908 OPS).
- Joey Votto has a .286 AVG and 873 OPS against Gio in 9 PA. Also has a .444 OBP thanks to 2 BB.
- No Red has a homer vs. Gio.
Mark Buehrle
- 15% K, 6% BB, 1.17 HR/9, 1.32 G/F in 23 IP
- Travis Hafner has a .246 AVG and 801 OPS in 82 PA with 3 HR, 4 2B, and 6 HBP (jeez, stop hitting him!).
- Ichiro Suzuki has a .431 AVG and 924 OPS in 53 PA (22-for-51).
- Vernon Wells has a .489 AVG and 1264 OPS in 52 PA with 7 XBH including 2 HR.
- Kevin Youkilis has a .136 AVG and 336 OPS in 25 PA with just 3 1B.
- Robinson Cano has a .412 AVG and 1356 OPS in 19 PA with 2 HR.
- Brett Gardner is 5-for-9 against Buehrle with a homer.
Hiroki Kuroda
- 20% K, 7% BB, 0 HR/9, 2.5 G/F in 23 IP
- Five Blue Jays have homers against Kuroda: Jose Bautista (2), Colby Rasmus, Edwin Encarnacion, JP Arencibia, and Rajai Davis.
- The team has a combined .207 AVG and 661 OPS in 129 PA.
- Arencibia has the most success hitting .500 with a 1417 OPS including his homer.
- Rasmus is just 3-for-21 (.143 AVG) with a 3B and HR, but 9 K.
Edwin Jackson

- 24% K, 11% BB, 0.40 HR/9, 2.86 G/F in 22.3 IP
- Current Marlins have 3 HR vs. E-Jax and Stanton doesn’t have any of them: Miguel Olivo (2) and Nick Green.
- Juan Pierre (.273 AVG, 606 OPS) and Placido Polanco (.083 AVG, 237 OPS) have the most PA vs. E-Jax with 13.
- The aforementioned Stanton is 2-for-4 with a BB and HBP in 6 PA.
Kevin Slowey
- 16% K, 6% BB, 0.76 HR/9, 0.79 G/F in 23.7 IP
- David DeJesus has 21 of the 39 PA that Cubs have vs. Slowey (.350 AVG, 1033 OPS).
Dioner Navarro is 3-for-3.
Jeremy Hellickson
- 19% K, 6% BB, 1.42 HR/9, 1.22 G/F in 25.3 IP
- 5 guys have 3 PA against Hellickson posting a .429 AVG and 1252 OPS
- Only Adam Dunn is hitless.
- Alexei Ramirez and Alex Rios are both 2-for-3.
- Paul Konerko and Alejandro De Aza are both 1-for-3.
Chris Sale
- 22% K, 6% BB, 1.38 HR/9, 1.21 G/F in 26 IP
- Current Rays have .306 AVG and 821 OPS against Sale in 42 PA.
- Shelly Duncan’s 9 PA are a team-high (.250 AVG, 708 OPS).
- No one has a homer against him.
Nick Tepesch
- 21% K, 5% BB, 0.61 HR/9, 3.22 G/F in 14.7 IP
- These 14.7 IP are his only ones as a major leaguer.
Vance Worley
- 14% K, 7% BB, 0.47 HR/9, 1.71 G/F in 19 IP
- Only Geovany Soto (6 PA), Lance Berkman (4), and Jeff Baker have faced Worley.
Jorge De La Rosa
- 20% K, 10% BB, 0.81 HR/9, 1.35 G/F in 22.3 IP
- Cody Ross has by far the most work against DLR with 29 PA (.292 AVG, 997 OPS, 2 HR).
- Even with his good work, the current D’Backs have a .218 AVG and 666 OPS in 88 PA.
- Both Gerardo Parra (14 PA) and Martin Prado (8) are hitting .167 against DLR.
Trevor Cahill
- 20% K, 8% BB, 0.72 HR/9, 1.59 G/F in 25 IP
- “Michael Cuddyer(player-profile)”:/players/Michael_Cuddyer-10333’s team-leading 19 PA haven’t gone well: .111 AVG, 436 OPS, though one of his two hits was a homer.
- Troy Tulowitzki, Jordan Pacheco, and Wilin Rosario also have homers against Cahill.
- Dexter Fowler is 4-for-8 in 10 PA.
Garrett Richards
- 21% K, 6% BB, 1.02 HR/9, 3.10 G/F in 17.7 IP
- Current Mariners have a .200 AVG and 490 OPS against him in 29 PA.
- Justin Smoak (.167 AVG, 500 OPS) has the lone extra-base hit (a double).
Brandon Maurer
- 12% K, 6% BB, 1.86 HR/9, 0.87 G/F in 19.3 IP
- He hasn’t faced the Angels this year and he’s a rookie.
Jason Hammel
- 14% K, 8% BB, 1.46 HR/9, 0.74 G/F in 24.7 IP
- Chris Young has a .269 AVG and 629 OPS in 28 PA against him.
- The rest of the current A’s have just 20 PA against him spread over five players (Coco Crisp 7, Brandon Moss 4, Casper Wells 4, John Jaso 3, and Josh Reddick 2).
Jarrod Parker
- 10% K, 11% BB, 1.50 HR/9, 1.15 G/F in 18 IP
- Current O’s don’t have a ton of experience against Parker with 9 guys totaling 35 PA (.344 AVG, 1059 OPS).
- Chris Davis, Adam Jones, and Nate McLouth all have homers against him.
- Davis and JJ Hardy are both 2-for-6.
- Jones, meanwhile, is 3-for-5.
