Cheese, one of the preeminent baseball minds in all of fantasy sports and a winner of a $1,000,000 1st-place prize on both DraftKings and FanDuel, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate.
Happy Tuesday! Just like yesterday, we find ourselves with an ace-filled slate. We also add Coors Field to the mix tonight with the Brewers making the trek to Colorado. My initial look at all these good pitchers makes me want to play the ownership game, where I will seek out the lowest owned of the high-upside aces. As always, we will update projected ownership throughout the day here MLB DFS optimizer in LineupHQ.
Without further ado, let’s dive in and start digging through some MLB DFS picks for this Tuesday night slate.
Tuesday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings
Soon enough it’s all going to turn around, but for at least one more day, we have a boatload of aces to sort through.
ACES AND MORE ACES
- Zack Wheeler at Braves – 28.5% K, 6.2% BB, 2.57 ERA, 3.32 SIERA
- Chris Sale vs. Phillies – 32.1% K, 5.6% BB, 2.38 ERA, 2.80 SIERA
- Cole Ragans vs. Twins – 29.3% K, 8.8% BB, 3.14 ERA, 3.49 SIERA
- Dylan Cease at A’s – 29.4% K, 8.5% BB, 3.47 ERA, 3.46 SIERA
- Freddy Peralta at Rockies – 27.6% K, 9.4% BB, 3.68 ERA, 3.78 SIERA
- Framber Valdez at Mariners – 24% K, 7.8% BB, 2.91 ERA, 3.41 SIERA
- Luis Castillo vs. Astros – 24.3% K, 6.5% BB, 3.64 ERA, 3.79 SIERA
- Nick Lodolo at Giants – 24.7% K, 7.5% BB, 4.76 ERA, 3.78 SIERA
- Shane Baz vs. Angels – 21.6% K, 8.5% BB, 3.06 ERA, 4.33 SIERA
- Pablo Lopez at Royals – 25.6% K, 5.3% BB, 4.08 ERA, 3.46 SIERA
Just like we saw on Monday, we not only have a slate filled with aces, but a slate filled with aces who have opened the season in top form. Through 2 starts, Zack Wheeler, Freddy Peralta, Dylan Cease, Cole Ragans, and Chris Sale are all over 28% strikeouts, and only one of them is over 7% walks. Beyond those five, Shane Baz has also looked elite in his one start, Nick Lodolo and Pablo Lopez both have ERAs below 2.25, and Framber Valdez and Luis Castillo both have long track records and great matchups in Seattle. So, I’ll start with a similar sentiment as yesterday – you can play any and all of these aces, and my initial lean is to spread out at pitcher while hoping to be more focused with the bats.
With that being said, we still need to find some favorites and narrow things down. We are seeing DK start to spread out the pricing just a bit more, with Wheeler and Cease both over $10,000, so salary does start to play a bit more of a role.
On both sites, Zack Wheeler is the most expensive pitcher, and I can’t argue with that at all. He’s as consistent as any ace in the league, and he’s been at another level so far this season with 18 strikeouts and just 2 walks in 13 innings. They were easier matchups, but even ignoring the slow start, this Braves team is an above-average strikeout matchup. If salary is no issue, Wheeler is my SP1, but this is certainly not a slate where you have to be forcing in the most expensive pitcher.
Chris Sale hasn’t been as sharp as Wheeler this season, but he’s also been on the opposite end of matchup difficulty, facing the Dodgers and Padres to open his season. He’s still getting swings and misses with elite control, and I’m viewing him as the same elite ace as last season. We’ve seen the Phillies have trouble with left-handed pitching, and while I still call this a tough matchup, it’s better than his first two matchups. With over 31% K to both sides of the plate last season, Sale’s upside matches anyone on this slate, and he’s around $1,000 cheaper than Sale on both sites. He’s my raw points SP2 and my SP1 with salary considered.
