Pitcher Grind Down
- Kyle Kendrick – Kendrick is a pitcher that you can target in very few spots. He has an average ERA and WHIP and a below average K-rate. That said, the Braves have really struggled against RH pitching this season as they are ranked 26th with a team .293 wOBA. I think he makes sense as a tournament play considering his very cheap price tag. Rating = 5
Salaries: $5600 FD, $8707 DS, $10550 DD, $7100 DK, $65300 FF, $14000 SS, $10700 FTD
- Ervin Santana – Santana has given up 5 or more earned runs in 4 of his last 6 starts. After a sizzling start to the season, he has really cooled off. The good news is that he faces a Phillies’ offense that is ranked 27th against RH pitching this season. Santana is a large favorite in a game that features a low run total. I’m sold on him tonight. Rating = 7
Salaries: $8100 FD, $15594 DS, $14200 DD, $7900 DK, $86200 FF, $21500 SS, $14600 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Philadelphia
Chase Utley – Utley’s batting average dipped below .300 for the first time since the start of the season. That said, he draws a nice matchup tonight against Santana who has given up a .382 wOBA to LHB’s this season.
Additional Plays: Ryan Howard
Atlanta
Freddie Freeman – Much like other RHP’s, Kendrick struggles against LHB’s. This season he has given up a .397 wOBA to batters from the left side of the plate. Freeman’s price has come down a bit across the board and it’s a nice time to buy low on him.
Additional Plays: Jason Heyward, Justin Upton

Pitcher Grind Down
- Miguel Gonzalez – Gonzalez has had some glaring home/road splits this season. He has a 2.77 ERA at home, but a 5.29 ERA on the road. While the Rays’ offense certainly hasn’t been lighting it up, I still think this is a tough matchup for Gonzalez. I’ll be avoiding him in all leagues. Rating = 4
Salaries: $6100 FD, $10961 DS, $12200 DD, $NA DK, $86100 FF, $17900 SS, $12500 FTD
- Erik Bedard – Bedard has had some terrific outings this season, but has also really struggled at times. You would like to see a little more consistency out of him. I love his cheap price tag across the industry, but he is facing an Orioles’ offense that has great power against LH pitching. Bedard is best served as a GPP play. Rating = 5
Salaries: $5000 FD, $11719 DS, $11450 DD, $5900 DK, $59200 FF, $13800 SS, $11650 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Baltimore
Adam Jones / Nelson Cruz – When the Orioles face a lefty, both Jones and Cruz should be close to the top of your list of OF’s to target. Both have a wOBA over .510 against LH pitching this season.
Additional Plays: Manny Machado
Tampa Bay
Desmond Jennings – Even though Gonzalez is a RHP, he gives up a much higher wOBA to RHB’s (.382) than he does to LHB’s (.308). Jennings is typically a better play against LH pitching, but I think he makes a nice value play in the OF tonight.
Additional Plays: Evan Longoria
Chicago Cubs at Miami

Pitcher Grind Down
- Jeff Samardzija – Samardzija hasn’t looked great in his last 4 starts. He has given up a combined 17 runs over that stretch, but to his credit he has struck out 28 batters. Samardzija is a high upside play tonight against the Marlins. I think he’ll go overlooked for the most part which only boosts his GPP value even more. Rating = 7
Salaries: $7600 FD, $18263 DS, $15350 DD, $8700 DK, $89400 FF, $24800 SS, $15850 FTD
- Anthony DeSclafani – DeSclafani will be making his 3rd career start tonight against the Cubs. In his first 2 starts he has given up a combined 7 earned runs with 9 K’s over 11 innings of work. DeSclafani is only available on FD tonight and can safely be avoided with all of the top pitching options on the mound. Rating = 4
Salaries: $4000 FD, $ DS, $9200 DD, $ DK, $ FF, $ SS, $ FTD
Batter Grind Down
Chicago Cubs
Anthony Rizzo – Rizzo has a .376 wOBA against RH pitching this season and faces the rookie RHP DeSclafani tonight. It can be hard paying up for a Cubs’ batter, but it could pay off nicely in a GPP.
Additional Plays: Starlin Castro, Luis Valbuena
Miami
Outside of Giancarlo Stanton as a tournament play, I’ll be avoiding the Marlins tonight against Samardzija.
Minnesota at Boston

Pitcher Grind Down
- Phil Hughes – Hughes continues to fly under the proverbial fantasy radar despite posting quality start after quality start. On the surface, a matchup against the Red Sox in Fenway is not optimal, but the Red Sox could only muster up 1 run against Kevin Correia last night and have dropped all the way to 16th against RH pitching on the season. Hughes has a 3.17 ERA on the season with a decent K-rate to boot. Hughes is in play on multi-pitcher sites and GPP’s. Rating = 6
Salaries: $7100 FD, $15305 DS, $16150 DD, $8500 DK, $95700 FF, $25400 SS, $17150 FTD
- Jon Lester – Lester has a 3.33 ERA on the season with a 1.27 WHIP and a K/9 of 9.7. I love his matchup tonight against the Twins who are ranked 20th against LH pitching this season. The Twins are also striking out at a 23% clip against lefties which boosts Lester’s value even more. Target Lester in all leagues. Rating = 8
Salaries: $9200 FD, $19689 DS, $17500 DD, $9300 DK, $99800 FF, $26200 SS, $18250 FTD
Batter Grind Down
Minnesota
Brian Dozier – Dozier is really the only Twins’ batter that I will have any exposure to. He has nice power (15 HR’s) and nice speed (15 SB’s). He offers great upside at a position that typically lacks that.
Additional Plays: None
Boston
Mike Napoli – Ignore the numbers from the tables above, they are a combination of the past 2 seasons and Hughes has been a much different pitcher this season. Hughes has still had problems with RHB’s though as he has given up a .356 wOBA to them this season.
Additional Plays: Brock Holt

Pitcher Grind Down
- Matt Cain – Cain continues to underwhelm. On the season he has a 3.84 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and a K/9 of 7.1. It’s hard to take him at face value because he has been so dominant over the years, but the truth is that he is just not the same pitcher. I’ll be avoiding him tonight against the White Sox who are ranked 7th against RH pitching this season. Rating = 5
Salaries: $7100 FD, $12423 DS, $14250 DD, $7400 DK, $75500 FF, $21000 SS, $14350 FTD
- John Danks – Danks has been a tough read all season. Not only for himself, but for his opponents as well. He’s a little too inconsistent for me to use in cash games, but he has shown an ability to throw a gem every now and then so he does carry some value as a deep GPP play. Rating = 5
Salaries: $5900 FD, $12429 DS, $11900 DD, $7600 DK, $89800 FF, $20700 SS, $12250 FTD
Batter Grind Down
San Francisco
Buster Posey – Posey against a pretty average lefty? Sign me up! Posey has a .338 wOBA against LH pitching this season and is only striking out at an incredible 3% rate against lefties.
Additional Plays: Hunter Pence
Chicago White Sox
Jose Abreu – This is a great matchup for Abreu. Cain has given up a lot of HR’s over the past 2 years and has given up a .338 wOBA to RHB’s this season. We all know the type of power that Abreu has so if you can afford him, get him in your lineup.
Additional Plays: Adam Eaton
