DFS Tournament Report: August 3rd
After several close calls in the past week that included a second place finish, RotoGrinders CEO Cal Spears finally broke through and won a live qualifier. He would be joined by the #75 ranked player in the RotoGrinders TPOY standings, paulyshorts, in the winners circle.
Here’s a look at how those two won their seats as well as a review of the evenings big winners:
DraftKings $4 Million FBWC Qualifier ($300 entry)
Early on it was a Giants stack that dominated the standings as the top four teams 90 minutes in all had some type of that stack. Leading the way was eck2b and cheeseisgood (#193 in RG’s TPOY rankings). Entensity99 would next hold the top spot with outstanding performances from Bartolo Colon, a handful of Texas Rangers including an Adrian Beltre monster night, and Yoenis Cespedes. With Colby Lewis on his team, however, that lead would be short-lived.
With play winding down for the night, porkdinner would hold a 17 point lead with a team that included a ton of big hitting performances. On his roster were the likes of Beltre, Cespedes, Brandon Crawford on a 2 HR night, A.J. Pierzynski, Christian Yelich, and Chris Davis. Unfortunately, his pitching (Colby Lewis and Jose Quintana) only managed 21 points and he’d end up finishing in third place.

The real story was RotoGrinders CEO Cal Spears, GrindersCal (#90 in RG’s TPOY race), who took the lead with only the two late games remaining with a double stack from the Mariners-Rockies game and an outstanding pitching performance from rookie Zack Godley.
It was the strong outing from Garrett Richards that gave Spears the lead and he only needed to fade wegbird123 and his two remaining players, Chris Davis and Stephen Vogt, to secure the victory. Vogt would get a late hit but it wasn’t enough and Spears was able to hold on for his second live qualifier seat (he also holds one for the FanDuel live final)!
Final Results:
1. GrindersCal – 198.2, $55,500 package to $4 Million FBWC
2. wegbird123 – 193.4, $7,500
3. porkdinner – 185.0, $5,000
4. JeffElJefe – 180.75, $3,000
5. pepiburwash – 170.4, $2,500

FanDuel $4 Million WFBC Qualifier ($1,065 Entry)
At FanDuel, a $1,065 buy-in saw a total of 78 entrants competing for the right to win a seat to the $4 Million WFBC. The first look at the leader board saw kingofqueens with four Mariners and three Giants on his roster leading the way. That roster also included Jesse Chavez who would put up a negative number later in the evening. wjc80 would next hold the top spot, along with the third-place team, with a roster that included Kyle Seager, Brad Miller, Shin-Soo Choo, and Jason Castro.
That team would hold the lead for most of the rest of the evening but a paulyshorts roster with a Seattle stack would be lurking dangerously close as would a lovesbases team that still had Garrett Richards on the mound. Paulyshorts would move into the top spot but lovesbases was in line to take the lead with the four point bonus for the pitcher win for Richards. However, that would come crashing down for lovesbases when Richards gave up two late runs. That would be the difference as paulyshorts would edge lovebases 60.0-59.58 to win the seat!
Final Results
1. paulyshorts – 60.0, $48,444 package to $4 Million WFBC
2. lovesbases – 59.58, $8,000
3. paulyshorts – 58.58, $4,000
4. wjc80 – 58.5, $3,000
5. mrtuttle05 – 55.83, $3,000
