Sunday Night Football Betting Picks: Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers

kittle800

The injury bug is the main character in the story of the Philadelphia Eagles at the San Francisco 49ers. With a wide array of players missing the contest, the 49ers are large home favorites against a winless Eagles team. Here’s a sports betting preview and Sunday Night Football betting picks for the Philadelphia Eagles at the San Francisco 49ers.

Eagles at 49ers SNF Betting Preview

The Eagles and 49ers both limp into Week 4 to play in a Sunday Night Football game that likely was far more interesting when NBC was drawing up the schedule. The turf at MetLife Stadium took a toll on San Francisco, while the Eagles — shocker — come into the contest very short on receiving options. The Eagles have only drafted six wide receivers since 2014 — the last time an Eagles wide receiver (Jeremy Maclin) eclipsed 1,000 yards.

The Eagles will be without DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffrey, Jalen Reagor, and Dallas Goedert. In three-wide receiver sets, Philadelphia will roll with Greg Ward, John Hightower, and Deontay Burnett. Quez Watkins will also be active. Raise your hand if you need to run a Google search on nearly all of those players. Raises hand.

On the San Francisco side of the football, the Niners will be without Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert on offense. Jordan Reed hit the injured reserve this week and defender Dee Ford joins the likes of Nick Bosa and Richard Sherman on the sideline. Fortunately, San Francisco welcomes back George Kittle — a welcome addition for Nick Mullens. Along with Kittle, Deebo Samuel will make his season debut — albeit in a limited capacity. Samuel will be an extremely interesting DFS option on DraftKings tonight, priced at only $200 in the Showdown format.

Despite the injuries, the 49ers are 2-1 this season — helped by a pair of layup victories against the Jets and Giants. In both victories, the 49ers defense allowed less than 200 passing yards and only 170 total rushing yards. The next man up mentality seems to be working against weaker teams — opposing offenses average 4.8 yards per play.

The Eagles are fresh off settling for a tie against, well… the Bengals. Philadelphia played not to lose in the overtime period and as a result, are looking up in the NFC East again at 0-2-1. Another loss would be horrible, but the limited Eagles’ offense has only mustered 4.5 yards per play this season. Without Dallas Goedert and DeSean Jackson, paths to better offensive success — especially against the 49ers — are very tough to imagine.

Miles Sanders and Zach Ertz will likely be the focal points of the office for Philadelphia this evening. Sanders just missed 100 yards on the ground last week but rushed for better than 5 yards per attempt. Zach Ertz saw 10 targets and will likely be tabbed for a similar workload swimming upstream against the 49ers defense. Both Eagles will likely garner plenty of attention in Showdown formats tonight.

Sunday Night Football Betting Picks

Given all of the injuries for both offenses, points could be tough to come by. While the 49ers are pretty banged up on both sides of the ball, the identity of this team is to play defense and run the football. The Eagles, not possessing the same identity, desperately lack the firepower to attack this defense on the road. The likes of Greg Ward, John Hightower, and Deontay Burnett are not imposing figures on the outside. The 49ers can key in on Miles Sanders and Zach Ertz and dare the other offensive weapons to beat them.

I certainly could see the 49ers getting ahead early with a couple of scores. Thereafter, I could see the Niners taking the air out of the football while Carson Wentz makes mistakes with his limited possessions. After the total moved up a couple of points this week, the under is ripe for the picking. I will take the under in San Francisco.
