Million Dollar Musings: Friday, September 29
CheeseIsGood, a two-time winner of a $1,000,000 first-place prize in DFS, is here to give you his musings on the upcoming MLB DFS slate. Whether you are looking for the top pitchers or the best stacks, Cheese has you covered with an extensive deep dive into his MLB DFS picks.
Happy Friday and Happy Final Musings of 2023! I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to follow along with me throughout the season. I hope you’ve learned something, improved your DFS game, and maybe had a little fun along the way.
I won’t have any articles for the playoffs, but for the few bigger slates in the first couple rounds, we’ll have some expert tags in LineupHQ to help you get headed in the right direction.
As far as this final Friday night of the regular season, we have a big ol’ tangled mess of a 13-game slate on both sides of the ledger. Other than the Braves and maybe the Twins in Coors Field, there’s really nothing jumping out on either side of the MLB DFS picks. I’ll narrow things down as best as I can, but this looks like a good night to work on those dart-throwing skills.
Friday Pitching: MLB DFS Picks on FanDuel & DraftKings
For the most part, salary is not much of an issue on the pitching side. There is no one above $10k on DK and only Zac Gallen is priced up to any concerning level on FD. It’s also an extremely large and jumbled group of top options, where we’re missing any obvious can’t-miss plays. Because of the lack of spend-up aces, I end up with no cheap nonsense in my pool. Everyone listed here is between $6,900 – $9,700 on DK:
BIG OL’ TOP-ISH TIER AND ALSO THE ONLY TIER
Zac Gallen vs. Astros
Nathan Eovaldi at Mariners
Lance Lynn at Giants
Dylan Cease vs. Padres
Bryan Woo vs. Rangers
Yusei Kikuchi vs. Rays
Joe Ryan at Rockies
Aaron Civale at Blue Jays
Nick Pivetta at Orioles
John Means vs. Red Sox
JP France at Diamondbacks
Carlos Rodon at Royals
Chase Silseth vs. A’s
Ken Waldichuk at Angels
Allan Winans vs. Nationals
This is quite a mess, with 15 pitchers who all fall into the same bucket. I’ll talk briefly through all of them and will clear up my thoughts in the Clifford Notes.
I’ll start by saying that Zac Gallen has faded a bit down the stretch but is still very much an elite ace who can put up a DFS slate-breaker any time he takes the mound. The problem here is that he is the most expensive pitcher on the slate, and he’s facing the Astros in playoff mode. The realistic upside is not there to worry about spending up on him. He is certainly in my pool, but this is not a priority.
Nathan Eovaldi has gotten stretched out to the 85-pitch range, but he still doesn’t look great, with an ugly 13.8% walk rate and just 20% strikeouts in his five starts off the IL. He still has time and room to improve, but I don’t love spending on this either.
