MLB Grind Down: Friday, September 18th

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.353 (Rank: 4) — Strikeout Rate: 24.9% (Rank: 29)
Pitches per PA: 3.99 (Rank: 1)

Analysis: Lynn has not been in the best of form recently, posting a 5.28 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 13.1% over the last month of play. He draws an awful matchup today against the Cubs, who are a very patient team at the plate. To make matters worse, the Cubs also have the fourth-highest team wOBA over the last two weeks of play. With so many aces on the bump tonight, we can skip right over Lynn.

Pitcher Rating: 60.6

Dan Haren : FD: $7,200 — DK: $6,400

Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 355.2 — SIERA: 4.07 — ERA: 3.95 — K%: 18.0% — BB%: 4.9% — HR/9: 1.5

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.300 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 25.2% (Rank: 30)
Pitches per PA: 3.82 (Rank: 15)

Analysis: Haren gives up a lot of home runs. The last time I checked, that’s not what pitchers get rewarded for in daily fantasy baseball. Over the last month of play, Haren owns a 4.71 SIERA while giving up 2.1 home runs per nine innings. There is more risk than potential reward with Haren, as the Cardinals are ranked above the major league average in both team wOBA and strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

Pitcher Rating: 58.8

Batter Grind Down

St. Louis

The Cardinals draw an intriguing matchup against Dan Haren, who is a fly-ball pitcher that struggles to keep the ball in the yard. Haren hasn’t been particularly effective against hitters from either side of the plate, allowing a .308+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters over the last two seasons.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs draw a favorable matchup today against the struggling Lance Lynn, who has not been sharp in his recent outings. Lynn has allowed a .331 wOBA to left-handed hitters over the last two seasons, which bodes well for the left-handed heavy lineup of the Cubs.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.353 (Rank: 4) — Strikeout Rate: 23.1% (Rank: 26)
Pitches per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 21)

Analysis: Fernandez pitched well in his first start back from injury, but he only threw 69 pitches in five innings of work. The Marlins have no reason to over-extend him in any start the rest of the season and I’d be surprised to see him throw more than 80-90 pitches tonight. That’s a huge concern because it severely limits his upside. A matchup against the Nationals also hurts his cause, as Washington is ranked fourth in team wOBA over the last two weeks. I’m a huge Fernandez fan, but I won’t be targeting him tonight at this price point.

Pitcher Rating: 92.5

Max Scherzer : FD: $11,000 — DK: $12,100

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.304 (Rank: 25) — Strikeout Rate: 16.1% (Rank: 2)
Pitches per PA: 3.72 (Rank: 29)

Analysis: Scherzer has been giving up home runs left and right, but that high home run per fly ball rate is unsustainable. He should experience some positive regression, which is great news for his fantasy appeal. His indicators still look sharp, as he has a 2.92 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26.8% over the last month of play. Even better, he gets to face a Marlins offense that is ranked dead last in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Scherzer will get overlooked tonight, but he is arguably the safest pitcher on the board tonight.

Pitcher Rating: 95.7

Batter Grind Down

Miami

The Marlins can safely be avoided tonight against Max Scherzer. Not only do they have one of the lowest team totals on the board, but Scherzer has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .300 wOBA over the last two seasons.

Even though Jose Fernandez is not expected to pitch deep into tonight’s game, there is very little fantasy appeal with the Nationals tonight. Bryce Harper may be worth a look in tournaments, but the rest of this lineup can be avoided.

He draws an extremely tough matchup tonight against the Blue Jays and he has to face them in the American League’s version of Coors Field. If Porcello was on your radar, I’m going to recommend trying out a different fantasy sport. Football, maybe?

This will be his second start of the season though and with only two minor league starts under his belt, potential rust is an issue. For now, we should take a wait-and-see approach with Stroman, as the Red Sox are a very capable offense.

Tampa Bay

The Rays draw a mediocre matchup tonight against the inexperienced Tyler Wilson. In these situations, I always like to rely on Vegas and they have the Rays set as small favorites in a game with a low total. They are secondary plays at best tonight.
