NHL Grind Down: Monday, October 23rd

The RotoGrinders NHL Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the NHL schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy hockey there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, salaries, and more.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. Hockey is an extremely high variance sport. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

With only two games on the docket tonight, we will have to take a look at almost everyone on hopes of maybe finding that third or fourth liner that lucks out and gets into the right place at the right time. The San Jose Sharks have had their share of problems so far this season as they have posted a 3-4 record so far this season. That doesn’t seem too bad but when you consider that San Jose has lit the lamp just 19 times in their first seven games you start to realize that it may be worse than it looks. Kevin LaBanc skates on the top line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski while Logan Couture centers Melker Karlsson and Tomas Hertl on the second line. Couture makes for a nice one-off here as he gets the bump up to the top power play unit to join the aforementioned Pavelski and Thornton. Brent Burns and Tin Heed man the points when the Sharks have the extra attacker and should see about 60% of the ice time when San Jose draws a penalty. Couture’s hat trick the other night in a 5-3 loss to the Islanders has placed him at the top of the Sharks scoring chart with eight points here in the early going. Seven of those eight points have come over the last four games so look for him to be all over the ice tonight. Thornton is next with six points while LaBanc has registered three goals to go along with two assists. Mikkel Boedker skates on the third line with Chris Tierney and while Timo Meier looks to be a healthy scratch look for Joonas Donskoi to move up and skate with them. Justin Braun has some value from the back line for your GPP plays but I’d stick to Burns and Heed for cash game play.
