If I were to tell you that the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers both have the same amount of points ,you’d probably not believe me and go look for yourself. But alas, they both do indeed have 21 points in the standings. They also have both given up 70 goals or more which is probably a good reason why both teams are on the outside looking in had the playoffs started today. A funny thing is happening to the Flames, however, and that is, they are getting better, defensively anyway. They have won five of their last seven games by scoring just 14 goals, which indicates that goaltender Chad Johnson is doing an awfully good job in net as Calgary has tightened up the defense. Sam Bennett has been the most productive player from the third line, as he has two goals and two assists over the last five games. Matthew Tkachuk, and Mikael Backlund play on the top line and are joined by second liner Troy Brouwer when the Flames have the man advantage. Mark Giordano and Dougie Hamilton man the points as Calgary pretty much gives those five players the majority of the ice time when the draw a penalty. Brouwer and line mate Sean Monahan make a decent GPP duo, as they skate on the second line. There will be some goals scored here, as Anthony Stolarz will make his first NHL start for the Flyers.
The Flyers are going to try to turn this thing around, as they are 3-5- in their last 10 games and need a win badly here to stay at least in shouting distance of the teams that are ahead of them in the playoff race. Twenty-one points is currently good enough for a three-way 10th-place tie in the Eastern conference and we all know that’s not good enough to make the playoffs. Wayne Simmonds makes for a nice one off-play here as his four points over the last five games has propelled him to take the lead where the Philadelphia scoring is concerned. He leap-frogged over first liners Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek and now has recorded 19 points in 22 games. Brayden Schenn rounds out the top line, making this the line to target tonight. Shayne Gostisbehere is getting every opportunity to right the ship but is getting outscored by both Mark Streit and Ivan Provonov on the back line. The Flyers should be able to score a few goals tonight but the top line will have to do the damage.
