Welcome to the RotoGrinders NBA Grind Down. In this all-encompassing preview of today’s NBA action, every game will be broken down statistically, with several key elements highlighted in our charts.

Vegas lines are broken down to show projected team totals, to give you an idea of who is favored to win, and often more importantly, how many points they’re expected to score. We also provide pace numbers, so you can spot a game that might have a few extra possessions and more opportunities for fantasy points.

We also provide position-by-position matchup rankings for every team, to give you an idea of the players who will be in better situations to succeed. Using Defense versus Position data, every projected starter is listed along with his opponent’s rank in points allowed to players of his position. These color-coded charts will help you spot the best matchups of the night at a glance.

Orlando Magic

Happy New Year, Grinders! Hope everyone had an awesome night and are ready to accomplish their DFS goals for this year. Let’s make it the best one yet!

Evan Fournier has missed the past three games due to a heel injury. He is expected back tonight, but we have yet to receive anything official. Jodie Meeks has started in Fournier’s place, but he will not be a viable fantasy option coming off the bench. Fournier usually plays over 30 minutes, so it’ll be tough for Meeks to make an impact in limited minutes. Serge Ibaka continued to play well in the absence of Fournier, and his usage rate has only gone up 1.1 since Fournier has been out of the lineup. The Pacers are 29th in rebounding differential, and Ibaka is averaging 8.14 rebounds over his last seven starts. With most of the top PFs on this slate in the same salary range as Ibaka, he grades out as one of the top options at the positions.

Bismack Biyombo should also benefit from a rebounding perspective if Fournier is out, but as long as Nikola Vucevic is in the lineup, Biyombo’s ceiling will be capped. Vucevic continued his boom-or-bust play this season by breaking out against the Hornets last Wednesday, but in the three games prior to that one, he’d averaged just 27.3 DraftKings points per contest. Elfrid Payton had been playing well before that Hornets game, but he’ll simply be a GPP option tonight since his minutes are not secure. Since D.J. Augustin is in the time share with Payton, he also deserves some consideration given his affordable price tag across the industry. Augustin does have 30+ fantasy point upside, but don’t expect him to reach that ceiling often.

Indiana Pacers

Paul George has really been carrying the Pacers in the past two games, scoring over 30 actual points and playing over 36 minutes per game. He should be able to continue his strong play against the Magic and his old coach Frank Vogel. George fills it up in other categories, so even if he is not scoring a bunch, he should be able to at least hit 30 fantasy points, not entirely ruining your lineup. If Kawhi Leonard is out again, Paul George and Andrew Wiggins are the two top SF options, and both are extremely viable in all formats. Since Wiggins is $1k cheaper than George on both sites, he offers slightly more roster flexibility. Thaddeus Young looks like a solid cash game play who has averaged 29.6 FanDuel points over his last six while playing over 35 minutes in all but one contest.

Jeff Teague has played extremely well and has scored over 41 fantasy points in seven of his last eight starts. With Monta Ellis having sprained his ankle on Friday, the lack of guard depth allows for Teague to play all the minutes possible. While it is a pace-down game for the Pacers, they still have the third-highest implied team total, making Teague a strong option coming off a game where he dished out a career-high 17 assists. Glenn Robinson III and C.J. Miles should also continue to see a solid amount of minutes with Ellis and Stuckey out, but both players have yet to prove they are consistent enough for cash games. Myles Turner has been producing at a solid clip, but he also lacks consistency and is simply a GPP option. Al Jefferson looks like a lock for his 14-16 minutes and is a low-end play at center if you need a cheap filler in tournaments.

San Antonio Spurs

Kawhi Leonard has missed the past two games due to a stomach illness. I guess he must have eaten the same thing as Rodney Hood. Leonard should play tonight, but we have yet to receive anything official from the team. Obviously, a lot of tonight’s decisions hinge on whether or not Kawhi plays. LaMarcus Aldridge reminded us why he’s only a GPP option this season by disappearing against the Blazers this past Friday. He only took three shots, and recency bias might depress his ownership, making him a viable tournament play from a game theory perspective should Kawhi sit out again. Tony Parker seems to have found his stroke and is averaging 26.06 FanDuel points over his last three games. We’ve attacked Dennis Schroder and his -2.85 DPRM all season, and I don’t see a reason to stop now. Since Schroder will play more minutes than Parker, Patty Mills is also a viable GPP play. Danny Green and Manu Ginobili have also played well over the last two games that Leonard has been out, and they’ll be viable GPP options if Leonard is out again. Jonathan Simmons could also benefit from Kawhi’s absence, so he could be worth a look.

Atlanta Hawks

The Spurs are a tough defensive team, making all the Hawks GPP options only. Still, Dwight Howard should be able to dominate inside against Pau Gasol. Howard is averaging 40.6 DK points over his last three games since returning from a back injury. Dennis Schroder has seen his salary fall considerably with the return of Howard, and he’ll also be viable in this matchup. Tony Parker is not an elite defender even though the table above shows that Schroder is in a tough DvP matchup. Thabo Sefolosha, Kent Bazemore, and Kyle Korver are splitting a majority of the wing minutes, but all three players are too random to trust in this game. For what it’s worth, Kyle Korver is the hottest one coming in and is cheaper than all three.

Marcus Morris missed Friday’s game due to a knee injury but is expected to play tonight. Tobias Harris started in his place on Friday but disappointed in his 38 minutes. Harris was playing better off the bench, and it’ll be interesting to see if Stan Van Gundy plays him with the second unit with Morris expected back. For his part, Morris is struggling, so I’d avoid him tonight. Reggie Jackson has played over 30 minutes in four straight games and is still under $6k on DraftKings. He’s only $6.1k on FanDuel, so he’s still playable. Jackson leads the team with a true usage rate of 30.6 percent and will likely have to deal with Josh Richardson or Rodney McGruder since Goran Dragic is still questionable with back spasms.

Jon Leuer continues to be a solid fantasy option at PF and is still priced under $5k on DraftKings and only $5.1k on FanDuel. If Morris is out again, Leuer is an elite option, but if Morris plays, he’ll get fewer minutes, lowering his potential upside. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope continues to get over 30 minutes, but he’s not consistent enough for cash but did torch the Heat for 33.8 DraftKings points in their last meeting. Andre Drummond will likely have to deal with Hassan Whiteside for most of the game, lowering his rebounding potential. Even so, he’s a viable center target on DraftKings since he is only $6.8k.

Miami Heat

Hassan Whiteside is currently listed as questionable due an eye injury he received on Friday. While it does not seem like it’s anything serious, Whiteside has mentioned that he’s laboring through some other injuries as well. His play has really dipped over the last three games, and he’s too expensive to trust right now. Goran Dragic is also questionable with his own back injury, and there has been no update on his status. Tyler Johnson will once again be a viable play if Dragic is out, but he’s a better play on DraftKings since he’s only $5.4k over there compared to the $6.2k he is on FanDuel.

Josh Richardson has also been tearing it up in the absence of Dragic and will be a strong option again if Dragic is out. He’s cheaper than Johnson on DraftKings but more expensive than him on FanDuel. James Johnson has not been getting a ton of minutes but he’s a viable option since he’s been making his minutes count, averaging 27.5 DraftKings points over his last 10 games. Willie Reed is a min-priced center play on FanDuel if you’re in need of one. He’s not going to crush playing under 15 minutes, but he’s looking like a viable fantasy option. If Whiteside sits, bump him up to an elite option. Justise Winslow is extremely inconsistent but also deserves consideration if Dragic is out.

Damian Lillard has missed the past three games due to an ankle injury, and C.J. McCollum has been playing PG in his place. McCollum had a huge first game in place of Lillard but has been back to his normal ways since then. His salary has spiked over $8k on DraftKings but he’s still a strong option against Ricky Rubio. McCollum has a 35.5 percent usage rate since Lillard went down and is still only $7.5k on FanDuel. Allen Crabbe has been seeing over 30 minutes in his last six games but has only scored over 20 fantasy points twice. Moe Harkless and Evan Turner are viable SF options, but neither of them jump off the page since they are in a virtual timeshare. Mason Plumlee has also been playing well over the past three games, and he’ll be a viable GPP play against the T-Wolves.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins, and Zach LaVine have all three been playing really well lately. Wiggins has been scoring more than LaVine, while KAT continues to grab double-doubles. LaVine is cheaper than Wiggins and should be considered an elite option with the position lacking depth today. Using Wiggins and LaVine together has also been a strong tournament tactic and will continue to be so against the Blazers. Since the Blazers are also 25th in rebounding differential, using all three also makes sense since Towns will likely grab another double-double. Ricky Rubio also deserves consideration against the Blazers, but his salary is a little inflated and there are better options at the position today. Gorgui Dieng continues to get minutes and he’ll be a viable play as well.

The Raptors have the top implied team total for tonight, and it makes sense to play both DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry. DeRozan is slightly cheaper than Lowry and went to nearby USC. He has not performed well against the Lakers over this last three games dating back to last season, but he’s still a top GPP option tonight. Kyle Lowry has been on fire of late, averaging 49.22 DraftKings points, and he should be heavily considered tonight. There is a concern that the Raptors will blow the Lakers out, but Lowry still scored 42.5 fantasy points against the Lakers in 30 minutes in their previous meeting. Terrence Ross has seen over 30 minutes in consecutive games and is only $3.8k on DraftKings and $4k on FanDuel. Cory Joseph is also in play, but he’s more of a late slate play. Jonas Valanciunas has really had his minutes limited over the past few games, making Lucas Nogueira an enticing option against the Lakers.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are really playing poorly, having lost 14 of their last 16 games. Julius Randle looked like he was finally turning the corner, but since the Lakers got blown out against Dallas on Thursday, he was not able to exceed value in 28 minutes. He’s a viable GPP play, but could be slightly risky for cash games since his salary has spiked. D’Angelo Russell has not been putting it together consistently and is also only a GPP play tonight. Lou Williams is not seeing the minutes he was earlier in the season with everyone healthy, but he deserves a look against his former team. Luol Deng has been extremely consistent and had his first bad game in a long time against Dallas. Nick Young is also a boom-or-bust option who will likely have to spend most of his energy on defense guarding DeMar DeRozan. Thomas Robinson has been making the most of his limited minutes, but is only viable on DK since he’s priced affordably $3.3k.
