Atlanta Hawks

Greetings Grinders! Welcome to the early Sunday edition of the Grind Down. We start with a nice game in the Big Apple with the Hawks traveling to New York. The Hawks currently sit as the second best team in the East, while the Knicks are sitting in the 10th spot. This should be a close game with a fun amount of fantasy goodness. The Hawks currently have only two guys averaging over 30 MPG Paul Millsap and Dennis Schroder. Since his big games last week against Cleveland and Philadelphia, Schroder has been in a slump. He has hit a season-low salary on DraftKings and FanDuel. This might be a nice buy-low opportunity on a guy averaging 30.2 MPG on the season. Derrick Rose has never been known as an elite defender but since Schroder is slumping we can only use him in tournaments for the all day slate on FanDuel. DraftKings is not even offering this game in the all day slate, so if you’re playing cash, Schroder is a fine option.

Dwight Howard was ejected his previous game for elbowing Cody Zeller and it looks like he should he’s back to his dominant ways. He’s currently averaging 39.2 FPS on DraftKings, which is 5x above his current salary of $7.2k. His splits show that he is a better player at home than on the road, so Dwight should only be used for tournaments as Brook Lopez should be the cash game C on the short slate games.

Paul Millsap has scored 40+ fantasy points in consecutive games and looks to be over his early season funk and looks like the most consistent option in Atlanta for this game. Porzingas’s length could bother him but he should be able to still make value. At this salary level, he’ll need 40 FPs to exceed value. Kent Bazemore has played 30 minutes in three consecutive games and should be able to at least make value if he can stay out of foul trouble against Carmelo Anthony. If Thabo Sefolosha misses the game again, Tim Hardaway Jr. should be considered a viable punt option.

New York Knicks

Carmelo Anthony is averaging 35.75 MPG over his last four games, and his splits show that he is a better player at home than on the road. It could also be because he got kicked out of a game in Boston, but still Anthony is an elite option on the short slate. Derrick Rose has been averaging 34.75 over his last four games, having hit 39 and 38 in two contests. He should see extended run in this game and is an elite option at his relatively cheap salary. He should be able to exceed value easily and likely has a higher ceiling than Schroder.

Kristaps Porzingis has been playing well and is also seeing the minutes necessary to provide us with fantasy gold. He has an elevated salary and gets a tough DvP matchup tonight. He’s too risky for cash games, but his length and recent strong play make him viable for tournaments on a short slate. On the all-day slate on FanDuel, Porzingis is still a strong tournament play with more upside that most at the position. It might just be better to punt the position and pay up for all the great guards on the slate.

Portland Trail Blazers

Damian Lillard has been in a slump and this is the perfect game for him to break out of it. Lillard has been averaging 33.75 DKFPs over his last three games, and that could keep his ownership down on the full slate with Russell Westbrook and Kyle Lowry available. If you’re making multiple teams, Lillard needs to be on there. Since the game is expected to be close, we can look for Lillard to put his stamp on it. C.J. McCollum is also interesting because he’s basically Lillard Lite. He’s averaging 36.2 DKFPs on the season and would need 36.5 to reach 5x today. Getting exposure to Portland through McColloum is not a bad idea. Lillard just has the higher ceiling and should come at low ownership for the all day slate.

Moe Harkless had his first game of not reaching value in the past three but I think the whole team deserves a break because it was a 3-in-4 back-to-back on the road situation. He will be better today and has been a focal point of the first unit, putting up 11 or more shot attempts in three out of his last four games. Mason Plumlee has been playing and had his first double-double of the season against New Orleans on Friday. He should be considered a top value play at C today but Brook Lopez is ahead of him in overall ranking because of the possible 50 burger he can drop. Evan Turner and Allen Crabbe are also viable in this one but anytime I play them it feels like I’m going to Vegas, sitting down at the Roulette table and trying to pick red or black and the winning number is green.

Brooklyn Nets

It looks like Jeremy Lin is close to his eventual return, but the team has not provided an update for today’s game. Randy Foye started their last game against the Thunder but did not make an impact. None of their guards really did. Brook Lopez was solid and should be considered an elite option against the Blazers today at home. Lopez averaged 49.5 DKFPs against the Blazers last season and is pretty cheap considering we’re used to seeing him in the $7k range. Plug in Lopez with confidence in both cash games and tournaments for the short slate and look at him as a possible sleeper for the all-day slate. Everyone else on this team is too random to fit with any confidence. Someone has to play well to keep it close but I’m just not sure. It could be Bojan Bogdanovic or Rondae Hollis-Jefferso,n but are they really worth it?

Indiana Pacers

Update: Since Stuckey will play nearly 20 minutes, he’s been upgraded to an elite option. He is minimum priced on both FD and DK and plays SG.

Paul George sat out the Pacers’ previous contest and C.J. Miles injured his knee after nine minutes of action and did not return. Miles will not play today, while Paul George is a game-time decision. This can swing a lot for this game. If George is out, Jeff Teague is an elite option. If George is in Teague is a secondary option with elite upside and is still in play because of the plus matchup against the Thunder. Glenn Robinson III will likely start if George is ruled out and he is a viable tournament punt. Thad Young’s value rests on the ankle of Paul George as well and his salary makes it easy to play him in cash games and tournaments if George is out. Since the all-day slates start so early today, it’s too tough to decipher this situation. It’s better to just avoid it and move on. We’ll get some clarity before lineups lock for the main slate.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Regardless of George’s status, Russell Westbrook is an elite play. He’s pretty expensive on DraftKings but a little more affordable on FanDuel. He’s a solid cash game play and on a four-game main slate might be mandatory for tournaments as well. As we saw last week with James Harden on Thursday, these guys have the highest upside and you’re falling really far behind if you don’t roster them. Still, from a game theory perspective it does not look wise to fade Westbrook today because you’ll have to chase DeMarcus Cousins 73.25 for the same type of ceiling. While it’s a possibility, it’s not a lock like Westbrook is.

Victor Oladipo seems to be finally turning it around. His shot has been on three out of the last four games and he should be considered a solid tournament option against the Pacers. He’s still too volatile for cash games but is a cheap option compared to Jimmy Butler or DeMar DeRozan. Since you need two SGs on FanDuel, he’s in play but not mandatory on the all day slate. For the four-game slate he’s a better second SG that has the same upside as Rodney Hood. Steven Adams looks like a perfect pairing with Russell Westbrook today. He’s also too volatile for cash games and should only be used in tournaments.

Toronto Raptors

Update: After further consideration of the slate, I moved DeMar DeRozan to an elite option on DraftKings.

Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan have been cash game studs that now don’t really have much upside left in their salaries. DeRozan has been at $9.2k on FanDuel for the past three games and will continue to do so for tonight. In a pace down game for a slow team, this does not look like the spot to go to DeRozn for tournaments. His cash game viability is also in question but he does get a nice matchup tonight. Since he has been playing so well and is the league’s leading scorer he can’t just be completely ignored. Kyle Lowry has been pretty consistent and only dropped two duds on us this season. He’s at a season-high $8.2k on DraftKings and continues to be at a season-high $8.3k on FanDuel. I don’t see the tournament upside but get the cash game appeal. Terrence Ross is starting to come on after a slow start and is a viable tournament option that carries considerable risk. He’s priced under $4k on both FD and DK, helping with your roster flexibility. I would not touch any of the Raptors’ big men as they can easily get into foul trouble against Boogie.

Sacramento Kings

DeMarcus Cousins had his best game of the season against the Clippers and will look to keep the momentum going against the Raptors. His salary has spiked back over $10k on DraftKings and is at a season-high $10.2k on FanDuel. He leads the team with a true usage rate of 34.2% and has played 30+ minutes in six consecutive games, with the low being 33 minutes. He makes for a solid cash game play but the 9th ranked implied team total worries me a little. Still, this game looks like it will lead the Kings to score over their season average, meaning the ceiling is a little bit higher than normal. Cousins looks like more of a cash game play that tournament monster tonight. Still, since he is Boogie, he has the tournament-winning upside.

Rudy Gay has a solid true usage rate of 26.5% and has not seen less than 31 minutes this season. He’s been in a slump since his huge game in Portland and should only be used in tournaments. Ty Lawson exploded against the Clippers but was struggling mightly before that since Darren Collison is back in the mix. Darren Collison has been solid since returning from suspension but is does not really have any upside as long as he’s coming off the bench.

Rodney Hood had that breakout game that I predicted, just sucks we were not able to use it on the main slate. Trey Lyles also exceeded value and saw his saw his salary drop slightly on DraftKings and remain the same on FanDuel. Hood should be a strong option again tonight against the Nuggets. This is a pace up game for the Jazz and Hood will continue chucking threes like it’s all he knows. Boris Diaw sat out the first leg of a back-to-back and should be back tonight. He’s not a viable option even if he starts. With Diaw expected back, Lyles should come off the bench, where he could be more effective. Lyles has not shown any consistency and is better served for tournaments.

Rudy Gobert continues to play well and has a double-double in four out of his last five starts. Keep plugging him in at these salary levels on DraftKings. He is the perfect play when using two centers tonight. Over on FanDuel, he’s still a solid option but Cousins and Lopez have higher ceilings than him. Gordon Hayward is struggling right now and is only a tournament option against the Nuggets. He’s still worth a shot because he’ll come with low ownership in a plus matchup. Dante Exum is playing more than Shelvin Mack and is in a nice spot to exceed value. Just don’t expect him to score more than 25 fps because Hood, Favors, and Gobert are the primary options with the first unit. This is the third game in four nights for the Jazz with it being the second night of a back-to-back on the road. Tread carefully here.

Denver Nuggets

Wilson Chandler continues to play well off the bench and also gets time at PF when Danilo Gallinari is in the game with him. Wilson Chandler remains a strong option against the Jazz, but the ownership should finally catch up to the production. The Nuggets rotation have been an absolute mess, but welcome to life with Mike Malone. Nikola Jokic finally saw 27 minutes and wouldn’t ya know it, had a productive game. Jokic could go back to playing under 27 minutes or play 30 against a big team like the Jazz. No one know, so he’ll be relegated to a tournament option only. Danilo Gallinari has been solid for the Nuggets but his salary has his upside baked in. He’s a better cash game play than tournament option. Against the Jazz, that cash game viability is at risk as well.

Emmanuel Mudiay finally put together two consecutive good games, but I would suggest not getting on his train today with so many better guards available. Kenneth Faried has played like a manimal on a mission, but he also has his upside priced in. This is not a great spot for the Nuggets but if they were actually a good team they would take advantage of the fact the Jazz are playing on the second night of a back-to-back on the road with all the injuries their dealing with.
