The Blazers are 8-7 on the season and head to iconic Madison Square Garden to take on the Knicks tonight. Portland is ranked eighth in pace of play and seventh in points scored per game on the season, but this will be a pace-down game against the Knicks. The matchup looks favorable on paper, as the Knicks are ranked 21st in points allowed per game and 27th in defensive efficiency this season. The Blazers have an implied total of 108.3 points, which is surprisingly the fifth highest in the slate. We shouldn’t put a ton of stock into that ranking though, as 108.3 points is a high team total.
Damian Lillard has struggled in his last three games, averaging 32.5 minutes and 32 fantasy points per game. He still leads the Blazers with a true usage rate of 32.8%, but the Knicks have actually been pretty stout against point guards this season. I’ll never recommend fading Lillard completely in tournaments, but if I’m paying up for a point guard tonight, I’m finding the extra cap space for Russell Westbrook against the Lakers. C.J. McCollum has scored at least 32 fantasy points in seven of his last nine games, topping the 40 fantasy point mark four times during that stretch. He draws an excellent matchup against Courtney Lee and the Knicks, who are ranked 29th against shooting guards. Maurice Harkless struggled his last time out, but continues to play 30+ minutes a night with Al-Farouq Aminu out. Ed Davis, Noah Vonleh, and Meyers Leonard would all be intriguing options if given enough minutes, but they are basically splitting time at power forward. Mason Plumlee minutes and fantasy production are trending upward. He is a borderline cash option and a solid GPP target.

The Knicks are only 6-7 on the season, but they do sport a 5-1 record at home. They are ranked 18th in pace of play, 21st in points scored per game, and 21st in points allowed per game. They’ve been blown out on a number of different occasions this season, but you really can’t ask for a better matchup than facing the Blazers at home. On the season, Portland is ranked 28th or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and rebounding differential. The Knicks have an implied total of 109.8 points, which is the second highest in the slate. The Knicks’ projected point differential of +7.3 is the highest of the eight teams in action tonight, which gives a sizable boost to their offense as a whole.
Derrick Rose is one of the most frustrating players to watch in the NBA. When you have him in your lineup, you have a hard time believing how few peripheral statistics he has in his game logs. When you have a different Knicks’ player in your lineup, you can’t believe how many bad shots Rose takes. While I’m not a huge Rose fan in general, he draws an exploitable matchup tonight against Damian Lillard. I slightly prefer Rajon Rondo at a similar price point, but Rose is worth a look in tournaments. Courtney Lee is a viable punt play at shooting guard tonight. He doesn’t have the highest floor or ceiling, but he should play 30+ minutes in an uptempo game and he’s close to min-salary across the industry. Carmelo Anthony is averaging 36.7 fantasy points over his last three games and he leads the Knicks with a true usage rate of 28.6% on the season. He is right there with Jimmy Butler as the top overall small forward in this slate. Kristaps Porziginis is one of the best values on the board, which is crazy considering how expensive his salary is. With Joakim Noah out, he should play 35+ minutes in an ideal matchup against the Blazers’ frontcourt. Noah’s absence also gives a boost to both Kyle O’Quinn and Willy Hernangomez. O’Quinn only played 17 minutes in his start the other night, but that was due to foul trouble. Look for him to see north of 20 minutes tonight.

The Pelicans have won two games in a row and four of their last ten. Jrue Holiday is back in the mix and he hasn’t shown any rust after missing the first few weeks of the season. The Pelicans are ranked eighth in pace of play, but only 20th in points scored per game. Holiday should help this offense become a bit more efficient, as he can take some of the pressure off of Anthony Davis. The Pelicans are listed as 8.5-point underdogs tonight against the Hawks in a game that features an over/under of 210.5 points. Both of these teams are ranked inside the top ten in pace, so we should see a fairly high scoring game. The Pelicans have an implied total of only 101 points, but that isn’t much lower than their season average.
Tim Frazier minutes have not gone down since Jrue Holiday returned to the lineup. In his last two games, Frazier has played 32 and 36 minutes, scoring 28 and 37 fantasy points. Eventually, I expect Frazier to see around 28-30 minutes per game. He draws an exploitable matchup tonight against the Hawks, but he’s a better GPP target than a cash game option. Holiday played 30 minutes in his second game back with the team and should see something similar to that tonight. His price is a bit high on FanDuel, but he is very playable on DraftKings at $6,400. Dante Cunningham has been playing a ton of minutes recently and is a decent punt if you need a player that is close to the bare minimum. Anthony Davis is averaging 66 fantasy points in his last two games, but he does draw a tough matchup against the Hawks’ frontcourt. Davis isn’t as critical in lineup building as Russell Westbrook, but he is still an elite play. Terrence Jones is listed as questionable for tonight, but if he’s able to suit up, he makes an intriguing GPP option off the bench. He is averaging over 30 fantasy points per game in his last three.

The Hawks have the second best record in the Eastern Conference, although they are trying to snap a two-game losing streak. They are ranked fourth in pace of play, 13th in points scored per game, and eighth in points allowed per game this season. They draw a favorable matchup against the Pelicans, who like to push the pace and aren’t particularly effective on the defensive end of the floor. New Orleans is currently ranked 26th in fantasy points allowed per game and 28th in rebounding differential. The Hawks have an implied total of 109.5 points, which is the third highest in the slate and 3.7 points above their season average.
Dennis Schroder hasn’t been terrible this season, but he hasn’t been nearly as effective as many predicted. His minutes and production are both trending in the wrong direction and despite the favorable matchup, he’s a tournament flier tonight. Kyle Korver has quietly played well in his last three games and is worth a look as a value play at shooting guard. The Pelicans are ranked 28th against shooting guards this season. Kent Bazemore has played at least 30 minutes in each of his last four games and should benefit from an uptempo style of play. He is an elite play on sites that require you to roster two small forwards. Paul Millsap finally snapped out of his funk, averaging 40.2 fantasy points in his last three games. Even though Anthony Davis looks like a tough matchup on paper, the Pelicans are ranked 24th against power forwards this season. Dwight Howard is often the forgotten one in this lineup, but he is averaging a team-high 1.29 fantasy points per minute. He is a terrific tournament play on a night where his ownership will be low.

The Bulls are 9-5 on the season and currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference standings. They have played at a slow pace (22nd), but are ranked 15th in points scored per game and ninth in points allowed per game. They draw a favorable matchup tonight against the Nuggets, who are ranked 22nd in both points allowed per game and fantasy points allowed per game this season. The Bulls are listed as 1.5-point favorites with an implied total of 104.5 points. This is one of those games that has sneaky shootout potential, despite the mediocre over/under.
Rajon Rondo has been solid on a per-minute basis this season and is finally starting to see consistent minutes. He has played at least 34 minutes in four of his last five games and he gets to face a Nuggets’ defense that is ranked 28th against point guards this season. The Rondo/Westbrook combo will be a popular pairing at point guard tonight and for good reason. Dwyane Wade has seen a small boost in minutes recently, which makes him a much more appealing fantasy option. He is only $6,000 on DraftKings and the Nuggets are ranked dead last against shooting guards this season. Jimmy Butler has taken over as the go-to player in the Bulls’ offense. Even though the Nuggets have been tough against opposing small forwards, a matchup against Danilo Gallinari doesn’t scare me in the slightest. Taj Gibson is a fine cash game option at power forward. He offers a high floor for a player at his price point. Robin Lopez is a sneaky target at center tonight. He has played at least 28 minutes in six of his last seven games and his $4,900 price on FanDuel is awfully intriguing.

The Nuggets have lost six of their last ten games and no longer appear to be a team heading in the right direction. They are ranked seventh in pace of play and 11th in points scored per game, but their play on the defensive end of the floor is what’s holding them back. They draw a fairly difficult matchup tonight against the Bulls, who are ranked 12th or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and rebounding differential this season. The Nuggets have an implied total of only 103 points, which is the second lowest in the slate and 2.9 points below their season average.
Will Barton made his return to the lineup the other night against the Jazz, playing 17 minutes as a starter. His minutes will only go up from here and now that he’s healthy, he should cut into the minutes of Jameer Nelson (which may cut into the minutes of Emmanuel Mudiay), Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari. Until Barton sees a full complement of minutes, he can be avoided in DFS. Rajon Rondo has actually been more than a turnstile on defense this season and the Bulls are ranked sixth against point guards. Dollar for dollar, I’d rather have Rondo instead of Mudiay. Gallinari has been playing a ton of minutes this season, but has FP/min of 0.72 is not very appealing. Chandler is my favorite target here, although his price has come up enough that I see him as more of a secondary play tonight against the Bulls. Kenneth Faried, Nikola Jokic, and Jusuf Nurkic are all viable GPP options, but we can’t project any of them to play more than 25 minutes, which makes them risky cash game plays.

The Thunder got off to a quick start this season, but have lost six of their last ten games. Their defense has been good considering the pace at which they play, but they need to score more points (ranked 14th) if they are going to continue to be one of the fastest-paced teams in the NBA. They will try to right the ship tonight against the Lakers, who are ranked 27th in points allowed per game and 26th in defensive efficiency. The Thunder have an implied total of 111.3 points, which is the highest in the slate and six points above their season average. Given the low spread and high total, we can give a sizable boost the Thunder offense as a whole.
Russell Westbrook will likely be 80% owned tonight in cash games and for good reason. he is averaging 56.7 fantasy points per game with an NBA-leading true usage of 45.4%. He is looking to become the third player in history (Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson) to record three straight triple-doubles against the Lakers. With the season that he is having, he deserves to be in that company and I think he gets another triple-double tonight. Victor Oladipo is finally looking like the player the Thunder thought they traded for. In his last three games, he is averaging 37.9 fantasy points. He is also an elite play in all formats and you can pair him with Westbrook. Andre Roberson is playing 30+ minutes per game recently and has been scoring around 20 fantasy points a night. He is a viable punt at small forward in this matchup. Steven Adams should see minutes in the low-30s against the Lakers. I’ll take my chances with that any day of the week, especially at his price point.

The Lakers have been one of the most surprising teams in the NBA so far. They are 7-7 on the season and are ranked second in points scored per game. Their defense hasn’t been great, but they are certainly outperforming expectations under head coach, Luke Walton. The Lakers come into tonight’s game as 2.5-point underdogs against the Thunder, who are ranked 14th in points allowed per game this season. Los Angeles has an implied total of 108.8 points, which is the fourth highest in the slate. If this game goes as planned, it will be a shootout that comes down to the wire.
D’Angelo Russell was favoring his knee against the Bulls on Sunday and is currently listed as questionable for tonight’s game. While I get the appeal of targeting a player that is going to be less than 5% owned in tournaments, the risk is too great for me unless we hear that he is playing for sure. Taking a zero in fantasy basketball will automatically kill your lineup in GPPs and it’s not like Russell would be a must-play if he were healthy. If Russell is unable to play, Jordan Clarkson and Lou Williams would see major boosts in minutes and potentially in usage as well. Williams is a viable play either way and if you end up targeting him, you could see a nice boost if Russell ends up being scratched after lineups lock. Nick Young has been good this season, but he may draw the defense of Andre Roberson. Julius Randle is awesome on a per-minute basis, but is still averaging only 28.2 minutes on the season. Larry Nance makes a sneaky GPP play off the bench, as he should see 20-25 minutes at $3,900 on both FanDuel and DraftKings.
