The Coyotes rolled over this Anaheim team in their first meeting this season, with Anthony Duclair netting his first NHL hat trick. However, these teams look to be trending in opposite directions, and Arizona will certainly have a very difficult time repeating their performance from the first outing. Arizona has dropped three of their last four games and surrendered an alarming 16 goals in the process. Offensively, the team has utilized it’s new young talent to create two very capable scoring lines, with Martin Hanzal leading the charge with 12 assists in 11 games as the top line center. The previously mentioned Anthony Duclair plays on his wing and that duo offers some fantasy upside in this tough matchup. Both Max Domi and Mikkel Boedker are off to strong starts this season on the team’s second line, but don’t get carried away as Anaheim has only allowed 2.29 goals against per game this season. Oliver Ekman-Larsson remains the most fantasy relevant member of the Coyotes and the future star defenseman has already racked up a goal and seven assists on the young season.
Don’t look now, but after an ugly 1-7-2 start to the season, the Ducks have suddenly strung together an impressive four game winning streak. They shutout the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night and, despite their anemic offense to start the season, this is still essentially an identical team to the one that took the #1 seed into the Western Conference finals last season. The Ducks finally welcomed Ryan Getzlaf back to the lineup on Friday and their Captain has already dished out four assists in his two games since returning. We’re also starting to see Corey Perry heat up as the sniper has picked up a pair of goals and added five assists over the last six games. While that duo is clearly the #1 and #1A fantasy options on this Ducks team, don’t sleep on the dangerous second line of Carl Hagelin, Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg. If the Ducks plan on making a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they’re definitely going to need some consistent secondary scoring from that line. On the blue-line, it’s a three-headed monster for fantasy purposes; Cam Fowler, Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen all see a healthy dose of playing time with the man advantage and are safe, yet unspectacular, cash game options if the price is right.
