Wesley Bryan in excellent form heading into the Valspar Championship

DFS players are starting to take Wesley Bryan seriously. Over the last 12 months, he’s progressed from trick-shooting YouTube star to disappointing GPP dart, to now being a recent form standout demonstrating strong tourney-winning upside. After two consecutive Top-10 finishes at the Honda Classic and Genesis Open, W. Bryan’s DraftKings salary has risen to $7,500 for the Valspar Championship. But the higher salary won’t dissuade from his Valspar popularity, as his GPP ownership could approach 20% this week. Exceptional recent form remains one of the strongest arguments for rostering golfers, and few others in the Valspar field have better recent form than Wesley Bryan.

Henrik Stenson returns for the Valspar Championship after WD in Mexico City

Obviously, the WGC-Mexico Championship withdraw was a huge disappointment as Stenson was one of last week’s most popular DFS plays in both GPP and Cash games. Even though his stomach virus was a short-term ailment, DFS players will naturally struggle to re-roster Stenson for the Valspar Championship opening up the potential for lower ownership. However, the DFS community seems poised to overlook the WGC WD. Stenson is an elite ball-striker whose game is a great fit for the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort finishing T11 and solo 4th the last two years. The Valspar field is significantly weaker than last week and there is feeble ownership competition for Stenson among the higher-salary options. Stenson’s ownership is trending up and likely will be above 25% in DraftKings GPPs.

Charles Howell III among top course horses for the Valspar Championship

Course history enthusiasts struggled last week with sparse details of the Club de Golf Chapultepec course for the WGC-Mexico Championship. This week’s venue at Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead Course) offers over 15 years of PGA Tour data. Even though the Copperhead Course is long at 7,340 yards, it’s the ball-strikers and not the bombers that traditionally excel. The tight, tree-lined fairways forces emphasis on hitting fairways and second-shot approaches to the green. Copperhead is famous for one of the toughest 3-hole stretches in golf: the 16, 17 and 18 “Snake Pit”. Charles Howell III has placed in the top 15 in each of the last three years at Copperhead including a T5 finish in 2016. CHIII has been in great form all season with four Top-15 finishes already but he is no longer a strong value play as his DraftKings salary has risen to $9,400. Possible pivots to lower-priced players with strong Copperhead course history includes Kevin Na ($8.7K), Jason Dufner ($7.9K) and Luke Donald ($7.8K).
