Pitcher Breakdowns
Julio Teheran
- He has 31 MLB IP, so he is still very green. I wouldn’t mess with him against this offense in any scenario.
Ross Detwiler
- Andrelton Simmons and Reed Johnson both have a homer against Detwiler in the 83 PA against the Braves.
Only Jason Heyward has more than 15 PA against Detwiler going 5-for-14 (.357) with 2 BB.
Dan Uggla, meanwhile, is 0-for-10 with 4 BB
Jose Quintana
- Nine Indians have totaled just 33 PA against Quintana, who debuted last year and has just 140.3 IP in the majors. No single player has more than one hitter.
Justin Masterson

- Masterson has done well against the White Sox during his career with a 2.69 ERA, though the 1.33 WHIP might suggest a bit of caution.
- Four White have 30+ PA against Masterson with each popping a homer: 1) Paul Konerko has a .242 AVG and 784 OPS in 41 PA 2) Alexei Ramirez has a .162 AVG and 475 OPS in 41 PA 3) Alex Rios has a .235 AVG and 661 OPS in 39 PA 4) Adam Dunn has a .360 AVG and 993 OPS in 30 PA
- Dunn’s success makes sense given that lefties crush Masterson to the tune of a .290 AVG and 793 OPS compared to .223 and 605 for righties.
Miguel Gonzalez
- Robinson Cano is 0-for-9 against Gonzalez
- Gonzalez has a 2.63 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in 13.7 IP against the Yanks
CC Sabathia
- Given his lengthy career, it’s no surprise that several guys have relatively lengthy histories against Sabathia: 1) Nick Markakis has a .245 AVG and 647 OPS in 59 PA with a homer. 2) Adam Jones has a .286 AVG and 891 OPS in 53 PA with 3 HRs. 3) Matt Wieters has a .194 AVG and 565 OPS in 33 PA with a homer.
- The other two guys with 25+ PA have had success against CC: 1) Nolan Reimold has a .333 AVG and 888 OPS in 26 PA with a homer. 2) JJ Hardy has a .320 AVG and 920 OPS in 25 PA with a homer.
- Alexi Casilla, of all people, is 12-for-21 (.571 AVG) against CC.
Mike Leake
- Andrew McCutchen has struggled against Leake going 6-for-30 (.200 AVG) with a 573 OPS and one homer.
- Neil Walker is hitting just .103 on the season, but he might be able to get loose facing Leake against whom he has a .350 AVG and 1140 OPS in 25 PA.
- Garrett Jones has a .321 AVG and 823 OPS against Leake in 32 PA.
- Michael McKenry, Josh Harrison, and Gaby Sanchez also have single homers against Leake.
AJ Burnett

- Current Reds have a meager .200 AVG and 510 OPS against Burnett in 179 PA
- Shin-Soo Choo has the only homer, but he still has just a .167 AVG and 675 OPS in 21 PA
- Stars Joey Votto (.300 AVG) and Brandon Phillips (.313) have still had some success in 12 and 17 PA, respectively.
Alex Cobb
- Cobb has faced the Sox three times in his career, posting a 2.81 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 16 IP.
- Dustin Pedroia is 0-for-6 with a pair of walks in 8 PA.
Felix Doubront
- The Rays have a 700 OPS against lefties in 2012-2013, 20th in baseball.
- Homers are Doubront’s big issue, but no current Ray has hit one off of him.
- No current Ray has more than 13 PA against Doubront
- 11 Rays have combined for 77 PA of 797 OPS
John Lannan
- Lannan has a 5.04 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 60.7 IP against the Marlins
- However, only one current Marlin has more than 12 PA against him (Placido Polanco, .412 AVG and 862 OPS in 20 PA)
- Giancarlo Stanton has the lone homer vs. Lannan.
Ricky Nolasco
- Nolasco has a career 3.86 ERA and 1.19 WHIP against the Phillies in 102.7 IP.
- The three Phillie stars have 71% of the PA vs. Lannan with success:
Jon Niese
- Only five current Twins have faced Niese for a total of 23 PA with a 908 OPS)
Vance Worley
- Worley has a 5.17 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 38.3 IP spanning 7 starts and 2 relief appearances vs. the Mets.
- Daniel Murphy (17 PA), Ruben Tejada (17), and David Wright (16) are the three guys to have faced
Worley the most throughout his entire career.
- Murphy has crushed him going 10-for-15 (.667 AVG) with a 1573 OPS.
- Tejada has a .417 AVG and 882 OPS.
- Wright has the lone homer, though checks in last among the trio with a .267 AVG and 717 OPS.
J.A. Happ
- Jeff Francoeur has a .267 AVG in 15 PA against Happ.
Luis Mendoza
- No Blue Jay has logged more than nine PA against Mendoza.
- Jose Bautista has hit the lone homer.
Kyle Lohse
- Lohse was thrilled to have Carlos Beltran on his team last year as the outfielder simply wears him out with a .564 AVG and 1673 OPS in 51 PA including 4 HR and 11 BB.
- Ty Wigginton might get a spot start thanks to his 8-for-18 (.444 AVG) performance, though it’d only be his second start of the season.
- Matt Holliday is 5-for-10 (.500) with 2 BB against Lohse in 12 PA.
Shelby Miller
- Miller hasn’t faced the Brewers in his brief MLB career.
Clayton Kershaw
- Kershaw has a 2.25 ERA and 1.11 WHIP against the D’Backs in 84 IP… as if you need those stats to know he’s a great start.
- Newcomer Martin Prado is just 1-for-15 (.067 AVG) against Kershaw.
- Paul Goldschmidt, who has a career 990 OPS vs. lefties, is just 1-for-11 vs. Kershaw.
- Current D’Backs are hitting .173 with a 492 OPS vs. Kershaw in 111 PA.
Patrick Corbin
- Corbin has a 1.88 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 14.3 IP against the Dodgers.
The Dodgers have a 686 OPS vs. lefties since 2012.
Max Scherzer
- Eight of 10 current A’s have hits against Scherzer, but just two of the 13 hits have gone for extra bases yielding a .333 SLG in 54 PA.
Bartolo Colon
- Of the Tigers to log 10+ PA against Colon, the guy with the best OPS is definitely Migu… RAMON SANTIAGO? Santiago has a .524 AVG (11-for-21) and 1307 OPS in 23 PA. Miguel Cabrera, meanwhile, is 5-for-10 with a pair of doubles.
- Torii Hunter has logged the most work against Colon, but has just a .241 AVG and 750 OPS in 63 PA.
Alex Avila if 4-for-5 with 2 HR.
Bud Norris
- Predictably, former divisional foe Albert Pujols has logged almost all of the current Angels’ work against Norris (Iannetta has 3 PA) and been tamped down to the tune of a .192 AVG and 519 OPS in 28 PA.
Tommy Hanson
- Though the Stros used to be in the NL with Hanson, he hasn’t logged 10 or more PA against any current player on this club which makes sense given the immense turnover of late.
Yu Darvish
- The Mariners ripped Darvish in his MLB debut and again eight starts later and yet again another eight starts later resulting in a 6.65 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 23 IP.
- However, Ichiro and John Jaso did a lot of the damage so among current Mariners only Kyle Seager really stands out: .400 AVG and 1100 OPS in 12 PA.
- The team as a whole has a 480 OPS in 66 PA.
Hisashi Iwakuma
- Though it’s a tiny sample, Ian Kinsler has rocked Iwakuma with a .444 AVG and 1768 OPS in 11 PA with 2 HR and a double.
Jon Garland
- Current Padres have just a .213 AVG and 625 OPS in 91 PA vs. Garland.
Tyson Ross
- Ross had his 2013 debut against the Rockies in Colorado allowing three runs in four innings on four walks and three hits with a couple of strikeouts.
