Edinson Volquez : FD: $8,000 — DK: $7,900

vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.298 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 21.6% (Rank: 26)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 16) — Strikeout Rate: 18.0% (Rank: 6)
Pitches per PA: 3.84 (Rank: 11)
Analysis: Volquez is one of those pitchers that rarely gets targeted in daily fantasy baseball. He doesn’t have overwhelming stuff and his strikeout rate is just below the major league average. He always seems to give his team a chance to win, but we are looking for more upside from our starting pitchers. Even though he draws a favorable matchup against the Rays, I will not be targeting him tonight at this price point.
Pitcher Rating: 48.3
Erasmo Ramirez : FD: $7,600 — DK: $6,000
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 198.1 — SIERA: 4.25 — ERA: 4.27 — K%: 17.9% — BB%: 8.1% — HR/9: 1.1

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.329 (Rank: 13) — Strikeout Rate: 13.0% (Rank: 1)
Pitches per PA: 3.69 (Rank: 30)
Analysis: Ramirez has been a serviceable starter for the Rays this season, but he also has a low strikeout rate. Add in a matchup against the Royals, who have the lowest strikeout rate in all of baseball and we have ourselves an easy fade. Ramirez is cheap, but the risk outweighs the potential reward here, even at home.
Pitcher Rating: 47.1

Kansas City
The Royals draw a mediocre matchup tonight against Erasmo Ramirez. While he has given up a higher wOBA to right-handed hitters, Mike Moustakas is the top target here. He is riding an eight-game hitting streak and he has racked up four multi-hit games in his last five.

Tampa Bay
The Rays draw a mediocre matchup tonight against Edinson Volquez. Tampa Bay really struggles to score runs against right-handed pitching and Volquez has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .305 wOBA over the last two seasons. John Jaso and Daniel Nava are decent value plays at their respective positions.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.384 (Rank: 2) — Strikeout Rate: 20.9% (Rank: 16)
Pitches per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 7)
Analysis: Owens has pitched well in his first stint in the major leagues, posting a 4.08 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.2%. He is still unproven at the major league level though, and he draws a difficult matchup tonight against the red-hot Mets. Over the last two weeks of play, the Mets have the second-highest team wOBA. I didn’t think that I would say this all year, but we should avoid all pitchers facing the Mets right now.
Pitcher Rating: 42.7
Matt Harvey : FD: $11,000 — DK: $11,300

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.395 (Rank: 1) — Strikeout Rate: 17.9% (Rank: 5)
Pitches per PA: 3.96 (Rank: 2)
Analysis: Harvey comes into tonight’s start in terrific form, posting a 0.63 ERA (2.77 SIERA) with a strikeout rate of 24.0%. He has cut down on his walks, which allows him to attack hitters. He draws a tough matchup tonight against the Red Sox, but he gets to face them at home in the pitcher-friendly Citi Field. That said, given the tough matchup and the hefty price tag, Harvey should only be targeted in tournaments.

The Red Sox draw one of the worst matchups on the board tonight. Matt Harvey has been in terrific form recently and he has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .310 wOBA over the last two seasons. The Red Sox should be avoided tonight in the pitcher-friendly Citi Field.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.312 (Rank: 20) — Strikeout Rate: 20.6% (Rank: 15)
Pitches per PA: 3.78 (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Tanaka’s strikeout rate has been down recently, but other than that, he has been in good form. Over the last month of play, he has a 3.98 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 16.5%. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Braves and he gets to face them in a National League ballpark. The issue here is twofold. The Braves don’t strikeout often against right-handed pitching and there are so many other great pitching options available tonight.
Pitcher Rating: 80.9

Pitches per PA: 3.90 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Perez is one of my favorite pitchers to target hitters against. He has a high SIERA (5.07) with a very low strikeout rate (14.3%). He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Yankees, who are ranked eighth in team wOBA and 13th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. He should be avoided in all league formats.

Analysis: Gausman has been a great source of value on DraftKings in his last few starts. Over the last month of play, he has a 3.23 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.2%, yet he is still listed at a bargain-bin price of $5,600. While I’d love to take advantage of the mispricing, it’s hard to justify targeting him tonight against the Rangers, who are ranked eighth in both team wOBA and strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Hamels has not enjoyed the move to the American League, at least not yet. Over the last month of play, he has a 4.06 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.5%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Orioles, who have plenty of power in their lineup. Given the matchup, the ballpark, and his price point, he is not on my radar tonight. There are pitching options that I’d rather target in both cash games and tournaments.
