Gus Edwards expected to play; Mark Ingram is expected to be inactive

Gus Edwards is expected to play Sunday and work with J.K. Dobbins as the top backs. Mark Ingram is expected to be inactive, which would be his third straight game missed. Final confirmation won’t likely be available until inactives are released.

Alex Smith, Antonio Gibson and Terry McLaurin all expected to play

Alex Smith, Antonio Gibson and Terry McLaurin are all expected to play Sunday night. Despite their 6-9 record, the Football Team is in the playoffs as division champs with a win. This report is a positive sign for all three, but it will be important to confirm their statuses when inactives are released 90 minutes before kickoff.

Le’Veon Bell expected to be active, but could see very limited work

Le’Veon Bell is expected to be active, but he could see very limited work Sunday. The Chiefs have nothing to play for Sunday, and are already resting several of their top players. Ian Rapoport reported that Darwin Thompson will get the bulk of the carries, but Darrel Williams could also compete for work.

Cardinals 'not optimistic' Larry Fitzgerald plays, but not ruling him out yet

The Cardinals are reportedly not optimistic Larry Fitzgerald plays Sunday, but they are not ruling him out yet. Given that the Cardinals make the playoffs with a win, you have to imagine Fitzgerald will play if at all possible, even if he is limited. If he is ruled out, it is a further boost to KeeSean Johnson and Andy Isabella, while DeAndre Hopkins is the clear top target, as usual. Christian Kirk was already ruled out yesterday, so there should be plenty of opportunity for the active Cardinals.

Christian Kirk placed on COVID-19 reserve list

Christian Kirk has been placed on the COVID-19 reserve list, ruling him out for at least Week 17. KeeSean Johnson should see a significant boost, and Andy Isabella should see work for the first time since Week 13.

Tyler Kroft tests positive for COVID-19, ruled out for Week 17

Tyler Kroft has tested positive for COVID-19, meaning he is ruled out for Week 17. Because this is a positive test, not just a high-risk close contact, Kroft will be out at least 10 days from the time of the positive test, putting his playoff eligibility in question. The Bills should have Dawson Knox, Lee Smith and Nate Becker at TE, assuming none of them end up being close contacts of Kroft.

Eric Ebron placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list

Eric Ebron has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, meaning he will be out for Week 17. However, if he continues to test negative, he should be eligible to play in the playoffs. Vance McDonald will work as the top TE, with Kevin Rader behind him.

Michael Pittman Jr. clears concussion protocol, will be available Sunday

Michael Pittman Jr. has cleared the concussion protocol, meaning he will be available Sunday and does not carry an injury designation. Pittman has put together a strong rookie season and established a consistent role in the offense, although catching just one TD on the season has limited his upside.

Matthew Stafford

Los Angeles Rams
1/02/21, 2:35 PM ET

Matthew Stafford expected to start Sunday

Despite the Lions have nothing to play for Sunday, Matthew Stafford is expected to start, barring any type of setback. If healthy, Stafford playing is a solid boost to the Lions’ pass catchers. However, there is a significant risk of Stafford not being able to finish the game, as was the case last week, when he didn’t even get through the first quarter.

Alvin Kamara

New Orleans Saints

Multiple Saints RBs ruled COVID-19 close contacts to Alvin Kamara: Latavius Murray, Dwayne Washington, Michael Burton all ruled out for tomorrow

The Saints are already without Alvin Kamara, who tested positive for COVID-19, and now Latavius Murray, Dwayne Washington and Michael Burton have all been deemed close contacts. That means those players will be out Week 17, leaving the Saints with Ty Montgomery, Tony Jones and Taysom Hill as the available options rushing. Montgomery has been working as a WR, but has experience at RB, although he hasn’t had 10 carries in a game since 2017. Tony Jones is a rookie practice squad RB, which at least means he is familiar with the RB playbook. Hill does a little bit of everything on offense for the Saints, and will certainly be a big factor around the goal line.

Alvin Kamara

New Orleans Saints

Alvin Kamara placed on COVID list, won't play Sunday

Alvin Kamara has been placed on the COVID list, meaning he won’t be able to play Sunday but should have a good shot at returning for the Saints first postseason contest. We should expect to see a heavy dose of Latavius Murray, who now becomes one of the best mid-range/value plays on the slate. His touchdown equity should be very high in this offense, with Taysom Hill goal-line carries likely to be the only threat to his red-zone work on the ground. Dwayne Washington and Ty Montgomery will act in complementary roles behind Murray, with Hill also figuring to potentially pick up a few extra snaps. Emmanuel Sanders’ ceiling rises without Kamara around to eat up a big portion of the Saints target share. Jared Cook is another potential beneficiary.

Keenan Allen

Keenan Allen (COVID protocols) officially ruled out for Week 17

Keenan Allen (COVID protocols) has been officially ruled out for Week 17’s matchup with the Chiefs. The Chargers will likely get to square off primarily with KC’s backups, so this is actually not a bad spot for Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense. It’s certainly possible KC utilizes their starters early on Sunday, but playing them the full game with the top seed locked up doesn’t seem like a wise proposition. Mike Williams was a target hog in Week 16 and should push for a similar sort of workload here. Jalen Guyton played nearly all the snaps with Allen on the shelf and Tyron Johnson was also on the field for about three quarters of LA’s offensive snaps, so both players have appeal as punt GPP plays.

Wednesday Week 17 NFL Roundup: Patrick Mahomes, Dalvin Cook, Ben Roethlisberger all to sit on Sunday; Panthers won't have Mike Davis, Jags to be without James Robinson

Week 17 is always a little weird, and we’re starting to get a clearer picture as to what regulars will be resting in the regular-season finale. The Chiefs won’t push Patrick Mahomes, instead turning to Chad Henne to lead the offense in a meaningless Week 17 game. It’s very likely that Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Le’Veon Bell and Sammy Watkins could also be eased up on or just flat out inactive, so you’re playing with fire by rostering any Chiefs in a game without consequence to them. The Vikings won’t have Dalvin Cook on Sunday due to a personal matter, leading to Alexander Mattison likely leading the backfield and setting up as one of the stronger values at the RB spot. Speaking of RB values, Mike Davis won’t play on Sunday for Carolina, leading to a much bigger workload for Rodney Smith. The Jags will be without James Robinson for a second straight week, giving Dare Ogunbowale another shot to lead the backfield after he turned in a solid yet uninspring effort in a blowout loss to Chicago. The Steelers are looking towards the playoffs and will therefore give Ben Roethlisberger a week of rest and let Mason Rudolph run the offense.
