MLB GPP vs. H2H Plays: June 3

MLB Picks for 50/50s/Double-ups/Head-to-Head VS GPPs

rotogrinders_user_21697

In this article I am going to give you my MLB picks for all game types, including 50/50s/double-ups/head-to-head and GPPs (guaranteed prize pool tournaments). I will break them down into two parts: Part 1 – 50/50s/Double-ups/Head-to-Head (AKA cash Games), Part 2 – GPPs.

Part 1 – 50/50s/Double-ups/Head-to-Head AKA (Cash Games)

When playing 50-50s/double-ups or head-to-head, you want guaranteed points. This is not where you roll the dice on all-or-nothing players. The idea is to simply produce a solid, well balanced team. It may not be explosive, but it doesn’t matter whether you finish in first place or not, you just need to cash.

STARTING PITCHERS

C.J. Wilson – Without any stud aces going today, Wilson becomes a great cash game option. Unlike prior seasons, Wilson has been very consistent (3.05 ERA, 1.11, 69 Ks in 76.2IP) this year and has quality starts in 6 of his last 7 starts. He dominated these Astros (8IP, 4H, 1ER, 7Ks) in Houston the last time he faced them and I think he throws another gem tonight.

anibal-sanchez-300x200

Anibal Sanchez – Sanchez has been outstanding this season (2.49 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 41 Ks in 43.1 IP), his only issue has been staying healthy. Sanchez has been terrific when pitching in Comerica Park and the Jays are not the same team outside of the Rogers Centre.

CATCHER

Victor Martinez – V-Mart continues to rake VS Major League pitching with hits in 7/9 games, including 5 multi-hit games. Martinez has mashed VS RHP (.311 BA, .367 OBP, with 10 HRs) all season and makes a great cash game play tonight.

John Jaso – Jaso is swinging a hot bat with hits in 5/7 games, including 3 multi-hit games. Jaso is a value version of Victor Martinez and is also crushing RHP (.310 BA, .397 OBP) this season. In a small sample size Jaso has hit Kuroda well (.400 BA, .500 OBP in 10 at-bats) in his career.

FIRST BASE

Paul Goldschmidt – You should know by now that Goldschmidt absolutely crushes LHP (.350 BA, .449 OBP), then add that to the fact he is in Coors Field tonight and Goldy becomes a must play in cash games.

adrian-gonzalez-300x200

Adrian Gonzalez – A-Gon is crushing RHP (.305, .382 OBP with 11HRs) this season and will face probably the worst pitcher on the board tonight (5.83 ERA, 1.51 WHIP) in Hector Noesi. Play Gonzalez with confidence.

SECOND BASE

Robinson Cano – His power is down, but Cano is still having a very good season (.327 BA, 31 RBIs) and is as consistent as they come at 2B. Gavin Floyd has struggled VS LHB throughout his career and that trend has continued (.305 BAA, .382 OBPA) this season. Cano should be good for a couple more hits tonight.

Scooter Gennett – Gennett has 6 hits in his last 3 games, including 3 doubles and a homerun. He continues to rake VS RHP (.302 BA, .338 OBP) and makes a tremendous value play in your cash games.

THIRD BASE

adrian-beltre-300x200

Adrian Beltre – Beltre has really started to heat up with hits in 7/10 games, including 5 multi-hit games. Beltre has been extremely consistent as a Texas Ranger year in and year out, and it seems like he is finally healthy now. Beltre is 6/17 (.353 BA) off of Jimenez with 2 doubles and a homer in his career.

Evan Longoria – Longoria is taking a lot of heat for his lack of production recently, but he still has 14 hits in his last 10 games. Longoria has hit Alvarez well in his career (6/10 with 3 bombs) and I think he is good for a couple more hits tonight. His price is depressed across the industry and I think he makes a great value play tonight.

SHORTSTOP

Troy Tulowitzki – Tulo has 1 hit in his last 16 games and still has ridiculous numbers (.350 BA, .450 OBP) this season. Tulowitzki is “Other Worldly” when hitting at home (.521 BA, .600 OBP) and is a must play in your cash games.

Hanley Ramirez – Hanley is by far the 2nd best option at SS if you cannot afford Tulo tonight. Han-Ram has 7 hits in his last 3 games, including a double and 2 homeruns. Ramirez has the luxury of facing a terrible pitcher in Hector Noesi tonight in Dodger Stadium.

OUTFIELDERS

nelson-cruz-300x200

Nelson Cruz – Cruz is “White Hot” at the dish with hits in 9/10 games, including 6 multi-hit games. In those 10 games he has a ridiculous 5 doubles and 6 homers. Cruz has murdered LHP all season (.405 BA, .531 OBP) and has hit Saunders very well over his career (.323 BA in 31 at-bats). He is very expensive but he has not let us down all season VS LHP.

Charlie Blackmon – Any time Blackmon is at home (.389 BA, .429 OBP) and facing a RHP (.311 BA, .358 OBP with 7 HRs & 9 SBs), I will have him in my cash game roster.

Christian Yelich – Yelich makes a great value play in your cash games due to his ability to contribute (38 Runs, 9 triples, 5 doubles, 5 homers and 8 SBs) in many offensive categories. He seems to reach base (8/10 games) and chip in on a nightly basis.

Part 2 – GPPs

GPPs are a whole new ball game. You need guys to have huge nights. GPP tournaments are all about upside. All-or-nothing players can become GPP gold, while value players are just as important as your star players.

STARTING PITCHERS

Zack Wheeler – Wheeler has been inconsistent this season (4.31 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 62 Ks in 62.2 IP), but has the stuff to dominate like he did last time out VS the Phillies (6.1 IP, 4H 1ER 9 Ks) in that “Band Box” known as Citizens Bank Park. The Cubs are striking out at a clip 22.4 % (3rd worst in NL) and have the NL’s worst BA VS RHP at .220. Wheeler has massive GPP upside in this match-up tonight.

gerrit-cole-300x200

Gerrit Cole – Cole has also been inconsistent this season, but can dominate any team when he has his good stuff. The Padres have the 2nd worst BA in the NL VS RHP at .225, and are striking out at a rate of 22.3%, which is good for the 5th most in the NL. Cole has big K potential and has a great match-up VS a weak hitting Padres team in Petco Park.

CATCHER

Wilin Rosario – Rosario has been struggling of late, but some home cooking is all he needs to break out. Rosario has massive power and has monster game upside when playing in Coors Field.

Evan Gattis – Gattis has a great match-up tonight in Turner Field VS Erasmo Ramirez and his 6.00 ERA. Gattis has ridiculous power and is capable of a multi-homer game.

FIRST BASE

Justin Morneau – Morneau is very quietly having a solid season (.299 BA, .343 OBP with 10 HRs) and has been even better at home (.345 BA, .398 OBP). I expect Morneau and the Rockies to have a big night tonight VS Chase Anderson.

anthony-rizzo-300x200

Anthony Rizzo – I like Zack Wheeler tonight, but he has had trouble VS LHB (.295 BAA, .378 OBPA), and if anyone gets to him tonight it will be Rizzo. Throughout his young career, Rizzo has raked VS RHP and has killed it (.321 BA, .470 OBP) in Wrigley Field this season. Rizzo has double-dong upside.

SECOND BASE

Jose Altuve – Altuve was one of the hottest hitters in the month of May (.357 BA, .393 OBP with 11 SBs) and has destroyed LHP (.422 BA, .448 OBP) all season. Wilson is a very good pitcher, but I doubt anyone can slow Altuve down right now.

Aaron Hill – Hill has had an off season so far, but can explode at any time with a monster game. Hill is a notorious lefty killer and has huge GPP potential in Coors Field VS Jorge De La Rosa tonight.

THIRD BASE

Martin Prado – Prado is a hit-machine (59 hits in 58 games) and has mashed LHP (.333 BA, .357 OBP) this season. This game has the highest over/under of the night and I expect a lot of runs.

kyle-seager-300x200

Kyle Seager – Seager has 10 hits in his last 5 games, including 2 doubles, 2 triples and 3 homers. I mentioned earlier that Floyd struggles VS LHB and I think Seager is in for another big game tonight.

SHORTSTOP

Xander Bogaerts – Bogaerts has been on fire with hits in 8/10 games, including 6 multi-hit games. Bogaerts is hammering LHP this season (.308 BA, .408 OBP) and is in a great spot VS rookie LHP T.J. House tonight.

Jhonny Peralta – I usually do not recommend batters VS ace pitchers like James Shields. However, Peralta has hit him very well over his career, going 11/29 (.379 BA) with a double and 3 homers. Peralta has big game upside and is a great “Boom-Or-Bust” option tonight.

OUTFIELDERS

justin-upton-300x200

Justin Upton – Upton has been a completely different hitter at home (.400 BA, 10 HRs) than he has been on the road (.194 BA, 3 HRs) this season. Erasmo Ramirez has been awful this season (6.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP) and J-Up should be in for a big game.

Jay Bruce – Bruce has not been good since his return from the DL, but a match-up VS homer prone Tim Lincecum at home might just be what the doctor ordered. Lincecum has struggled on the road (.491 ERA) and VS LHB (.294 BAA, .411 OBPA) this season. Bruce has big game upside and makes a great value GPP play tonight.

Cody Ross – Ross has certainly struggled this season (.184 BA, 1 HR) but has crushed LHP throughout his career. Ross has also hit De La Rosa very well in his career, going 11/32 (.344 BA, .432 OBP) with a double and 2 homers. If there was ever a game where he was going to break out, that game is tonight. Ross makes a great Boom-Or-Bust” OF option tonight.
