Pitcher Grind Down

Editor’s Note: Dan Haren has been removed from tonight’s start due to uncertain weather conditions. Lefty Travis Wood will start in his place, if there’s a game at all.

Dan Haren

Haren surprised a lot of us in his recent start when he shut down the Cardinals over seven innings. He will look to repeat that performance against a young, Phillies squad that can be easily taken care of. He will receive good amount of run support and is a big favorite. He makes a decent tournament play, with limited upside due to his 17.1% strikeout rate. Rating = 6

Salaries: $7,200 FD, $7,000 DK

Jerad Eickhoff

Eickhoff is in a terrible spot to give him a thought for any format. Although he pitched well in Triple AAA, the majors have been tough. In his first four starts, he has a 4.69 SIERA and now has to face a Cubs offense that is one of the highest team totals on the board (4.91). Avoid him today. Rating = 3

Salaries: $5,400 FD, $5,700 DK

Batter Grind Down

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs get a great matchup against Eickhoff who has struggled in a small sample size. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Dexter Fowler are all great plays, while this Cubs team looks like a solid stack tonight.

Philadelphia

The Phillies are not in a bad spot today against Haren. He has allowed a bunch of home runs (1.62 HR/9) and a .368 wOBA to left-handed batters. There is some value to be had in this Phillies offense.

Pitcher Grind Down

Zach Davies

Davies came out and pitched well in his second start, but did struggle against this Pirates squad in his first career start. This Pirates squad has been a much hotter offense recently and are in eleventh in the league in team wOBA over the last 30 days. He is a tough play today with low upside that should be avoided. Rating = 4

Salaries: $5,100 FD, $5,000 DK

Jeff Locke

Locke is simply an average real life starter who is good for about five innings, a couple earned runs and a low strikeout rate (17.2%). He is a tough start against the Brewers who have struggled over the season against lefties, but do possess some big bats that have hit Locke well in the past. Rating = 5.5

Salaries: $6,000 FD, $5,900 DK

Batter Grind Down

Milwaukee

The Brewers team total is low at 3.87. Yet, they still have Ryan Braun in their lineup who is an elite play tonight. Jean Segura and Khris Davis are decent secondary plays at their price.

The Pirates have a great matchup against Davies tonight. They have a 4.63 team total and should be solid for both cash and tournament play tonight.

Pitcher Grind Down

Tommy Milone

Something has got into Milone recently. Over the last month of play (six starts) his SIERA sits a 3.76 and is striking batters out at a slightly higher clip than during the rest of the season (18.2%). He has a decent matchup against the Sox today who are last in the league against lefties (.281 team wOBA). Milone is still risky, but makes a decent SP2 in tournament play. Rating = 5

Jose Quintana

Quintana has had another solid season for the White Sox. He comes into this game with a 3.58 SIERA and 20.5% strikeout rate. The problem today is the matchup as the Twins are a much better offense against left-handed pitching. He could make for a solid SP2, and is a bit safer than Milone in this matchup. Rating = 6

Salaries: $7,900 FD, $8,200 DK

Batter Grind Down

Minnesota

Quintana has been solid this year and has really done a good job of not allowing big outings against him since early in the season. With that said, the Twins have two guys that hit all left-handed pitching in Sano and Dozier. Both are solid plays at their positions.

Elite Plays:

Miguel Sano

Brian Dozier
2015 vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.344 — ISO: 0.228

Chicago White Sox

Milone has been great recently, yet has allowed a .328 wOBA to right-handed bats. This puts Jose Abreu into an elite play along with Avisail Garcia.

Pitcher Grind Down

Justin Verlander

Verlander has bounced back in a big way recently. Over the last month, he has a SIERA of 3.67 and a solid strikeout rate of 24.2%. The matchup tonight is tough against the Indians, but he does possess some upside for the night slate. Rating = 6

Salaries: $8,800 FD, $9,600 DK

Cody Anderson

Anderson has one of the lowest strikeout rates of any starter in the league at 11.3%. While he has pitched well at times this year, the matchup against the Tigers, who are eighth-ranked in the league against righties, is not one you want to take on. He is an easy avoid. Rating = 4

Salaries: $6,300 FD, $6,200 DK

Batter Grind Down

Detroit

Even as underdogs, the Tigers are clearly in play today. They draw a great matchup against Anderson who will struggle to strike out many batters today, which means a lot of balls will be put in play.

Cleveland

Verlander has pitched very well recently, which makes it tough to target the Cleveland bats. With that said, Vegas has them as heavy favorites here today with a team total of 4.32. Jason Kipnis and Michael Brantley are both in play.

Pitcher Grind Down

Noah Syndergaard

Syndergaard has been solid over the last month of play. He has put up a 2.75 SIERA during this span, while continuing to strike batters out at an elite rate of 28.9%. He has a great matchup against the Braves today who don’t K a lot, but are also not a high-powered offense by far. He is one of the biggest favorites on the board today as he gets to face off against the Braves who are the 27th ranked offense in terms of wOBA. He makes for a great play tonight. Rating = 9

Salaries: $10,500 FD, $10,700 DK

Williams Perez

Perez has been a great pitcher to pick on this year. He has a 4.97 SIERA after 16 starts and has recently allowed a home run in eight of his last ten starts. He is a gigantic underdog against the Mets today and should be avoided. Rating = 3*

Salaries: $5,800 FD, $4,300 DK

Batter Grind Down

NY Mets

The Mets have been one of the hottest offenses in baseball recently as they are the top offense in terms of wOBA over the last month of play. That is bad news for Perez who has allowed a wOBA of .321+ from both sides of the plate (.383 against lefties).

Elite Plays:

Yoenis Cespedes

Secondary Plays:

Atlanta

The Braves are a weak offense facing one of the better starters on the slate. Syndergaard has kept batters to a wOBA of under .295 from both sides of the plate this year. Avoid the bats against him.
