MLB Grind Down: Thursday, June 11th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

J.A. Happ (FD: $7200, DK: $6900)
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 223.1 — SIERA: 3.94 — K%: 19.3% — BB%: 6.9% — FB Rate: 38.2% — HR/FB: 10.6%

Cleveland Indians Offense (2015)
vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.322 (Rank: 9) — Strikeout Rate: 15.6% (Rank: 2)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 8) — Strikeout Rate: 16.3% (Rank: 3)
Pitchers per PA: 3.93 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Happ comes into today’s game in less than stellar form. He has a 4.54 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 15.0% over the last month of play. A matchup against a left-handed heavy lineup would typically be a good thing for a left-handed pitcher, but that’s not the case with Happ. Not only does Happ give up a higher wOBA to hitters from the left side of the plate, but the Indians are ranked 9th in wOBA (.322) and 2nd in strikeout rate (15.6%) against left-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating:52.6
Shaun Marcum (FD: $6400, DK: $4500)
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 26.0 — SIERA: 3.83 — K%: 23.6% — BB%: 9.4% — FB Rate: 43.7% — HR/FB: 22.6%

Seattle Mariners Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.293 (Rank: 26) — Strikeout Rate: 23.3% (Rank: 27)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.276 (Rank: 25) — Strikeout Rate: 28.5% (Rank: 30)
Pitchers per PA: 3.87 (Rank: 7)
Analysis: Marcum has pitched well this season, posting a 3.83 SIERA with an impressive strikeout rate of 23.6%. He will look to buck the trend of Indians’ pitchers getting shelled by this Mariners’ offense. Marcum is still very cheap on both FanDuel and DraftKings and he is a small favorite at home. He may be a little too risky for cash game play, but he’s worth a look in tournaments or as an SP2 on DraftKings ($4,500).

Last 14 Days: PA: 54 — wOBA: 0.300 — ISO: 0.085 — wRC+: 95
Analysis: Seager turned yesterday’s game in the Mariners’ favor with a grand slam off of Trevor Bauer. He has been inconsistent this season, but he still provides great power for a player at his price point. He has a .360 wOBA and a .202 ISO against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons. He draws a favorable matchup against Shaun Marcum, who has really struggled with left-handed hitters this season.

Last 14 Days: PA: 41 — wOBA: 0.395 — ISO: 0.188 — wRC+: 162
Analysis: Santana has been swinging a hot bat over the last two weeks with a .395 wOBA and a .188 ISO. He has always hit left-handed pitching well and he draws a favorable matchup today against J.A. Happ, who has given up a .322 wOBA to right-handed hitters. Santana is no longer catcher-eligible, but he is still a strong play at 1B/3B in the early slate.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 20.5% (Rank: 14)
Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 18)
Analysis: Cashner is a pitcher whose high strikeout rate doesn’t match his affordable salary. Since the start of 2014, he has a 3.59 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.3%. While the Braves’ offense doesn’t strike out often, they are ranked right around the major league average in wOBA against right-handed pitching. Cashner is a decent play in the early slate if you are looking to differentiate your lineup.
Pitcher Rating:68.0
Julio Teheran (FD: $7700, DK: $7700)
Pitching Stats:

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.301 (Rank: 17) — Strikeout Rate: 22.5% (Rank: 24)
Pitchers per PA: 3.81 (Rank: 13)
Analysis: Teheran has not pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 4.34 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 16.1%. The good news is that he gets to pitch at home today, where he has a 3.48 xFIP and a strikeout rate of 23.7% in his career. Teheran draws a favorable matchup against the Padres, who are ranked 23rd in wOBA (.297) and 25th in strikeout rate (21.5%) against right-handed pitching this season. Dollar for dollar, he is my favorite pitcher in the early three-game slate.

Freeman has a .391 wOBA and a .201 ISO against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons and he draws a favorable matchup against Andrew Cashner, who has given up a .326 wOBA to left-handed hitters.

Pitchers per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 6)
Analysis: Gonzalez has been solid in his first MLB appearances, but we shouldn’t be fooled by the low ERA. In his first two starts, he has a 5.90 SIERA with an extremely low strikeout rate of 7.4%. His low strikeout rate doesn’t bode well for his matchup today against the A’s, who make as good of contact as any team in the majors. On the season, Oakland is ranked 6th in wOBA (.320) and 4th in strikeout rate (17.2%) against right-handed pitching. Expect Gonzalez to come back to Earth in today’s start.

Pitchers per PA: 3.81 (Rank: 12)
Analysis: Kazmir got off to a quick start this season, but he has struggled over the last month of play, posting a 4.57 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.9%. During that stretch, he has walks 12.6% of the batters that he has faced, which is a big red flag. Kazmir may be the best bet to pick up a win in the early slate, but I’m not sure how much I want to target him against a Rangers’ offense that is ranked 6th in wOBA (.325) over the last two weeks. I’m leaning Teheran over Kazmir as my top pitcher in the early slate.

Pitchers per PA: 3.78 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: The sample size is still small, but Miley has struggled away from Fenway Park this season. His strikeouts have been down recently and his HR/FB rate of 2.6% over the last 30 days is unsustainable. With Matt Wieters back in the lineup, the Orioles once again have a formidable lineup to throw at left-handed pitchers. Miley is an easy pitcher to avoid in what is expected to be a high-scoring game.

Pitchers per PA: 3.99 (Rank: 2)
Analysis: Tillman has pitched better than his 5.61 ERA would suggest, but not by much. We need to see a little consistency from Tillman before considering him in daily fantasy baseball. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Red Sox, who are ranked 1st in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. The Red Sox also drive up opposing pitch counts, averaging the 2nd-most pitchers per plate appearance.

2014 – 2015: IP: 218.2 — SIERA: 4.09 — K%: 19.6% — BB%: 9.7% — FB Rate: 31.0% — HR/FB: 12.5%

New York Mets Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.291 (Rank: 28) — Strikeout Rate: 20.7% (Rank: 21)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.32 (Rank: 9) — Strikeout Rate: 21.6% (Rank: 20)
Pitchers per PA: 3.86 (Rank: 8)
Analysis: Lincecum has given up four earned runs in each of his last three starts. He’s a pitcher that has a lot more success in the pitcher-friendly confines of AT&T Park than he does on the road. He still has a decent strikeout rate, but he can really struggle with his command at times with a walk rate close to 10% over the last two seasons. He draws a favorable matchup against the Mets tonight, but he’s too risky to target in cash games.

Jon Niese (FD: $7400, DK: $7200)
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 250.2 — SIERA: 3.83 — K%: 17.0% — BB%: 5.9% — FB Rate: 28.2% — HR/FB: 11.2%
Last 30 Days: IP: 26 — SIERA: 4.17 — K%: 16.3% — BB%: 5.7% — FB Rate: 34.4% — HR/FB: 16.1%
San Francisco Giants Offense (2015)
vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.318 (Rank: 10) — Strikeout Rate: 20.2% (Rank: 12)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.324 (Rank: 7) — Strikeout Rate: 16.6% (Rank: 4)
Pitchers per PA: 3.7 (Rank: 27)
Analysis: The Giants have knocked around the Mets’ pitching staff so far in this series. Niese will try to shut the Giants’ offense down tonight. He has pitched well over the last two season with a 3.83 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 17.0%. He has a great track record at Citi Field, but this is not the best matchup on the board. The Giants have been red hot recently and they are a very tough team to strike out.

Buster Posey (FD: $3700, DK: $4100)
Position Eligibility: FD: C — DK: 1B/C
2014-15 vs. LH Pitching: PA: 229 — wOBA: 0.370 — ISO: 0.204 — wRC+: 143
Last 14 Days: PA: 48 — wOBA: 0.334 — ISO: 0.205 — wRC+: 117
Analysis: Posey is always in play when there is a left-handed pitcher on the mound. Given the lack of other catching options, he will likely be the most popular play at the position tonight. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against Jon Niese, who has given up a .342 wOBA to right-handed hitters since the start of 2014.
