Oklahoma City Thunder

Tonight’s NBA slate has a lot to live up to, after that epic Super Bowl. Good or bad, that was a game to remember. The Thunder have only won five of their last ten games and have fallen down to seventh place in the West. They draw a mediocre matchup against the Pacers, who are ranked 19th in points allowed per game and tenth in defensive efficiency. The Thunder come into the game as a 4.5-point underdog with an implied total of 103 points. Their projected point differential of -2.8 is one of the lowest in the slate.

The Pacers have been tough on opposing point guards this season, ranking sixth in fantasy points allowed to the position. Russell Westbrook is nearly matchup-proof though, and we generally only worry about two things with him: pace of play and an elite rim protector. The Pacers play at a decent pace and while Myles Turner is a good shot blocker, he’s not what we would call an elite rim protector. Westbrook is one of the top overall plays in the slate. Victor Oladipo offers good value at shooting guard. He has seen a sizable usage boost since Enes Kanter went down with his injury. Domantas Sabonis hasn’t really stepped up in Kanter’s absence, but he has seen a nice boost in playing time if you need a punt play at power forward. Steven Adams is averaging 36 minutes in his last three games and is one of my favorite sleepers in the slate. The Pacers are ranked 26th in rebounding differential this season.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers have won six games in a row and are now in contention for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They draw a mediocre matchup tonight against the Thunder, who are ranked 18th in points allowed per game and eighth in defensive efficiency. The Pacers do play a lot better at home than they do on the road, which helps explain why their implied total is higher than their season average.

For a while now, we have been targeting point guards against the Thunder. Even though Russell Westbrook has an above-average Defensive Real Plus-Minus (DRPM), the Thunder are ranked 21st against the position. Jeff Teague is always on my radar in tournaments because his ownership is always lower than it should be. With 11 games on the schedule, I will likely be avoiding the Pacers’ shooting guards. Paul George draws a tough matchup against Andre Roberson and is coming off of a bad three-game stretch. He’s more of a secondary option in this slate. If Thaddeus Young is ruled out, Lavoy Allen would draw another start at power forward. In 32 minutes against the Pistons, he scored 40 fantasy points on Saturday. I don’t like to target centers against Steven Adams and the Thunder, but Turner could see a few extra minutes if Young is unable to suit up.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers have lost eight of their last ten games and own the second worst record in the Western Conference. Luckily, they draw an exploitable matchup against the Kings and the spread is set at only five points. On the season, the Knicks are ranked 25th in points allowed per game and 23rd in defensive efficiency. The Lakers have an implied total of 107.5 points, which is the ninth highest in the slate.

D’Angelo Russell has played well since coming back from injury, averaging 33 minutes and 42 fantasy points per game. Derrick Rose is expected to return to the Knicks’ lineup, but that isn’t much of a detriment to Russell’s matchup. His price is getting expensive, but he is still an elite play over on FanDuel. Outside of Russell, it’s hard to trust any of the other Lakers. Nick Young and Lou Williams are both viable GPP plays at shooting guard, but there are better options at the position.

New York Knicks

The Knicks have lost six of their last ten games, but are only a game and a half out of the playoff picture in the East. They draw one of the best possible matchups tonight, as they take on the Lakers at home. On the season, Los Angeles is ranked 27th in points allowed per game and 29th in defensive efficiency. The Knicks have an implied total of 112.5 points, which is the second highest in the slate and 6.7 points above their season average.

The Knicks are expected to have Derrick Rose back in the lineup tonight, but they will be without Joakim Noah. Jeff Hornacek says that he prefers to pair Brandon Jennings with Willy Hernangomez, so if Jennings doesn’t start, I expect the Knicks to start Kyle O’Quinn at center. He has really played well when given big minutes this season and there is no reason why that can’t continue against the Lakers, who are ranked 29th against centers. If Hernangomez does draw the start, I will treat him as an elite play in all formats tonight. Carmelo Anthony has struggled in his last few games, but should bounce back nicely against the Lakers. We’ve been waiting for the perfect time to play Kristaps Porzingis and this just may be it. Thanks to foul trouble, his minutes have been down recently, but he could play 30+ minutes tonight against the Lakers.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers haven’t been in the best of form, but they have won two games in a row. Tonight’s game against the Wizards could be a great one to target for fantasy production, as the spread is set at one point and the over/under is at 220 points. The Wizards have been much better defensively over the last few weeks, but this game has all the makings of a shootout. The Cavaliers have an implied total of 109.5 points, which is one of the highest in the slate.

Kyrie Irving sat out Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury, but says that he expects to play tonight. Assuming he is in the lineup, he makes for a nice tournament play against the Wizards. The bigger the slate, the lower ownership is going to be on a number of these point guards. Iman Shumpert has been a nice value over the last few weeks, but is a secondary option at best. LeBron James is a bit too expensive to use on FanDuel, but is a viable target on DraftKings at $10,400. He’s not my favorite superstar in the slate, but I wouldn’t completely rule him out. Kevin Love has scored at least 40 fantasy points in three of his last six games. He draws the best matchup of anyone on the Cavaliers, as the Wizards are ranked 27th against power forwards this season.

Washington Wizards

The Wizards have won seven in a row and nine of their last ten. It’s hard to believe that they were completely out of the playoff picture a little over a month ago and now they are the third best team in the East. A win over the Cavaliers would go a long way for anyone that isn’t quite sold on the Wizards just yet. They come into the game as 1-point favorites with an implied total of 110.5 points. The Cavaliers are a worse matchup in name than on paper, as they are ranked 15th in defensive efficiency this season.

John Wall has failed to score more than 37 fantasy points in three of his last four meetings against the Cavaliers, but Cleveland is ranked 24th against point guards. The Cavaliers like to put Iman Shumpert on opposing point guards, but they may not be able to do that with Bradley Beal at the two. Wall is expensive, but I see him as an elite tournament play tonight. Bradley Beal grades out as a decent play here, but there are a number of viable point guard plays in the slate. Otto Porter has struggled with consistency this season and will have his hands full with LeBron James. Markieff Morris has been tremendous over the last month of play and he has scored at least 32 fantasy points in six of his last eight games. The issue here is the price; he is a better play on DraftKings than he is on FanDuel. Marcin Gortat isn’t playing 36-38 minutes anymore and while he offers a high floor, he draws a difficult matchup against Tristan Thompson.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz have won seven of their last ten games and would be the four seed if the regular season ended today. Tonight’s game against the Hawks may be a battle between two above-average teams, but this lacks some serious fantasy appeal. Both of these teams are ranked inside the top eight in points allowed per game and defensive efficiency. The Jazz currently have the lowest implied total in the slate at only 98 points.

George Hill hasn’t looked the same since his blazing start to the season. Even with Rodney Hood out, it’s hard to trust Hill in anything other than a big tournament. Joe Ingles has played well in his spot starts this season, but I’d rather take a shot on Alec Burks off the bench. In an 11 game slate, both can probably be avoided altogether. Derrick Favors only played ten minutes in his last game. Until he plays a full allotment of minutes, he is a risky option in DFS. Rudy Gobert is my favorite play here, but that’s not saying a whole lot. The thought process here is that he and Dwight Howard are both going to be right around the rim all game. I like his rebounding upside in this matchup, but he’s far from a core play.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have won six of their last ten games and have somehow dropped in the standings during that stretch. While tonight’s game against the Jazz should stay close throughout, it’s hard to justify playing anyone from this side of the ball. The Hawks draw the worst possible matchup, as the Jazz are ranked 29th in pace of play and first in points allowed per game. The Hawks have an implied total of only 99.5 points, which is 4.4 points below their season average. There is a reason why the Jazz are ranked eighth or better in fantasy points allowed to all five positions on the floor.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers have struggled to hold the fort down with Chris Paul out. They have lost six of their last ten games. They draw another tough matchup tonight against the Raptors, who are one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. The Clippers come into the game as 5.5-point underdogs with an implied total of only 105.3 points. Blake Griffin is really the only play of note from Los Angeles tonight. After scoring 49 fantasy points in back-to-back games, he played 37 minutes against the Celtics. He is clearly fully recovered from his injury and doesn’t appear to be on a minute restriction anymore. The Raptors are mediocre against power forwards and Griffin is only $8,800 on DraftKings.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors are a tough team to break down tonight until we know the availability of DeMar DeRozan and Patrick Patterson. If DeRozan is unable to suit up, that opens up so much usage for the rest of the starters. If Patterson is out, Lucas Nogueira could be asked to play big minutes at the four. This is a decent spot overall, as the Raptors come into the game with an implied total of 110.8 points, which is the fourth highest in the slate. Kyle Lowry and Norman Powell would both become elite fantasy options if DeRozan is ruled out. DeRozan’s absence would also give a small boost to DeMarre Carroll and Jonas Valanciunas. If Nogueira draws the start, he would become a viable punt play given his upside. If both players are active, I would list Lowry and DeRozan as secondary plays.
