Ok, so here we go again. The Rangers lose their first game out of the last six and second in the last 11 so what does head coach Alain Vigneault do? C’mon, you know. Chris Kreider is now skating with Rick Nash and Derek Stepan which makes the new line of Mats Zuccarello, Mika Zibanejad and Pavel Buchnevich very appealing for their road game against Calgary tonight. Even the line of Jimmy Vesey, J.T. Miller and Kevin Hayes could be in play tonight provided they can gel quick enough for that to happen. Hayes and Miller lead the team in scoring with 13 points apiece in the first 14 games the rangers have played so far. One has to assume that Brandon Pirri will stay on the top power play unit, making him a decent one-off play tonight. Even with Brian Elliott as the Flames goaltender on most nights they still have given up a league leading 55 goals so expect to see some Rangers in your cash games tonight. Ryan McDonagh is the play on the blue line as he gets the most ice time but Brady Skjei could be used in deeper GPP play as he has emerged by grabbing six assists in the last five games.
The Flames look to turn their fortunes around as they have now dropped five of their last six games and haven’t scored a power play goal in the last seven games. Calgary has been a one-line team for a long time now and it looks like Johnny Gaudreau is finally waking up from his post contract signing slumber. Gaudreau tallied twice in the 4-2 loss to Dallas which equaled his goal output in the first 14 games. Sean Monahan is his partner on the top line as well as being on their seemingly hapless power play unit. Streaky Michael Frolik leads the team in goals with five and is tied with Gaudreau for the team point lead with 10. Troy Brouwer has four goals but only seven points so far as he plays on the top power play unit along with defensemen Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie.
