Brewers-Nationals kick off 4th of July baseball goodness
It’s a game that isn’t widely available for utilization in the DFS industry which is a shame as it contains a top SP option in Max Scherzer as he takes on the strikeout happy Milwaukee Brewers. The bats for Milwaukee can be safely faded. Junior Guerra is coming off his best game of the year and makes for a nice mid-priced counter as he has upside. That said, the Nationals are swinging the bats well and have a run total approaching 4 1/2 runs. Daniel Murphy gets the day off for the Nationals making Bryce Harper (.395 wOBA, .222 ISO) and Wilson Ramos (.427 wOBA, .208 ISO) your top targets. The other six in the lineup are all worth consideration from Revere leading off to Stephen Drew (.372 wOBA, .324 ISO this season vs RHP) batting eighth.

Matt Wisler (4.68 SIERA) is coming off his best start of the season where he struck out 9 and only allowed 2 ER versus the Indians. Wisler is a fly ball pitcher (42.4% FB%) and struggles a ton with surrendering hard contact (36.7% Hard %). This isn’t a spot where we need to fully stack the Marlins but it’s more than justified to sprinkle a few bats throughout your lineups. Christian Yelich (142 wRC+, .385 wOBA, .183 ISO vs RHP) is the primary option in the Marlins offense batting in the three-hole. Derek Dietrich (147 wRC+, .392 wOBA, .152 ISO vs RHP) has a massive platoon split but gets a poor lineup spot tonight making him more of a tournament play. Marcell Ozuna (125 wRC+, .360 wOBA, .193 ISO vs RHP) can provide some potential power upside and may go overlooked given the RvR matchup. J.T. Realmuto (123 wRC+, .357 wOBA vs RHP) gets a huge lineup bump to the lead off spot and is definitely in consideration at a shallow catcher position.

Ubaldo Jimenez (4.91 SIERA, 6.5% K-BB%) has actually pitched well in his last two starts but those two starts did come against the Padres. The Mariners will impose a much tougher challenge tonight with the lefties in their lineup. Jimenez has struggled the most with LHBs this season (4.95 xFIP, .420 wOBA) while surrendering a 38.2% Hard%. Any Mariners batting in the top half of the order can be realistic targets for any format tonight. Robinson Cano (172 wRC+, .424 wOBA, .296 ISO vs RHP) and Kyle Seager (166 wRC+, .414 wOBA, .288 ISO vs RHP) are elite options on the afternoon slate given there price tags and matchup. Seth Smith (135 wRC+, .369 wOBA, .176 ISO vs RHP) and Nelson Cruz (126 wRC+, .356 wOBA, .197 ISO vs RHP) make for good secondary targets to include in Mariners stacks as well. Adam Lind (.215 ISO) is in consideration given his power upside versus RHP.

The Twin offense exploded for 17 runs yesterday afternoon but have an exponentially tougher matchup today against Cole Hamels. Hamels has been pitching fantastic over the last month, allowng 2 ER or less in five of six starts. The advanced stats of Hamels are sort of strange as he’s been lucky in certain aspects (.268 BABIP, 87.5% LOB%) and extremely unlucky in others (17.6% HR/FB, 3.5% IFFB%). We should expect these numbers to continue to normalize so we don’t want to allow them to deter us from targeting Hamels in a great matchup versus the Twins. Hamels has a 23.6% K% and a 12.2% SwStr% thus far this season so he has the upside to be the top scoring pitcher on Sunday.

Strasburg has been fantastic this season (2.93 SIERA, 25.4% K-BB%). The Reds are an elite matchup for Strasburg as well, especially with Adam Duvall out of the lineup. The only concern we have with Strasburg is how he will adjust in his first start since being activated from the disabled list. There has been no reported pitch count for Strasburg but it’s hard to see the Nationals pushing him in his first start back. Given the situation and matchup, Strasburg should be a decent tournament play. We won’t want to go out of our way to target Reds hitters but Joey Votto (141 wRC+, .387 wOBA, .227 ISO vs RHP) and Jay Bruce (130 wRC+, .371 wOBA, .306 ISO vs RHP) could make for interesting tournament plays if Strasburg struggles in his return.

The Nationals have hit LHP extremely well as a team this season (117 wRC+, .349 wOBA, .212 ISO). John Lamb has had better results in his last few starts but his peripheral and advanced stats still show he is not pitching all that great (5.10 SIERA, 6.3% K-BB%, 33.9% Hard%). The Nationals also have the bats to take advantage of Lamb in this matchup. Jayson Werth (215 wRC+, .494 wOBA, .297 ISO vs LHP) is the top option in the Nationals lineup and bats second. Michael Taylor (122 wRC+, .357 wOBA, .259 ISO vs LHP) and Anthony Rendon (133 wRC+, .372 wOBA vs LHP)are in consideration due to there ability to get on base and create runs. Bryce Harper (114 wRC+, .345 wOBA, .237 ISO vs LHP) and Ryan Zimmerman (.258 ISO vs LHP) offer significant power upside in this matchup and need to be targeted.

Velasquez (3.44 SIERA, 29.0% K%) is making his second start since returning from the DL. He was outstanding in his return versus the Diamondbacks, allowing 0ER in 5IP with 7Ks. The Royals haven’t exactly crushed RHP this season (92 wRC+, .313 wOBA, .130 ISO) and have been striking out much more frequently than seasons past (19.7% K% vs RHP). Velasquez has the tools to pitch extremely well in this matchup given that the Royals lineup has been decimated by injuries. There’s no need to target the Royals offense today, but if wanting to take a tournament flier, Eric Hosmer (134 wRC+, .375 wOBA, .166 ISO vs RHP) could be a decent option.
