Danny Salazar

Salazar (28.5 K%) is tonight's highest priced pitcher, but has some flaws in a tough spot vs Detroit

Danny Salazar is tonight’s top priced pitcher on a four game slate and has the 28.5 K% to back it up and with few high priced batting options to consider, he’s likely affordable and probably a fine choice (Detroit has a 15.2 K-BB% vs RHP). Another consideration might not only be fading, but going full contrarian and targeting Tiger bats because there are some red flags, including a 1.5 drop in his SwStr% with little change to his strikeout rate over the last month. Also, three times in his last five games he’s walked four or more, while he hasn’t even reached six innings in four of his last nine starts. His low line drive rate (16.2%) and 7.4 HR/FB does not mesh with his 34.8 Hard%. LHB’s have a 32.7 Hard% against him since last season, making Victor Martinez (132 wRC+, 212 ISO vs RHP this season) and Steven Moya (124 wRC+, .292 ISO vs RHP this season) interesting options. Miguel Cabrera (164 wRC+, .276 ISO vs RHP this season) is red hot (205 wRC+, 53.9 Hard% last seven days). Kinsler, Maybin, and Castellanos all have a wRC+ above 100 vs RHP this year and are above 175 overall the last seven days. Either way, Salazar is likely to have a lot of say in how daily fantasy contests turn out tonight.

Can Tyler Anderson continue impressive start?

The Rockies young SP, Tyler Anderson is off to a great start with a 2.98 SIERA and 24% K rate. While he’s not favored and facing a tough lineup in the Giants, the upside is there to merit using him in GPP’s. Jake Peavy has pitched much better of late and faces a Rockies team that struggles against RHP away from Coors. He doesn’t have much upside, however, as he doesn’t strikeout people that much (17.4% K rate). Charlie Blackmon, Carlos Gonzalez, and Nolan Arenado are secondary options for the Rockies while Buster Posey and Mac Williamson are the same for the Giants. Grant Green hasn’t done much but is worth consideration as a minimum priced punt batting second for the Giants.

Matt Harvey

Which Matt Harvey will show up today?

Harvey has appeared to pitch well over the last month but peripheral stats indicate that it hasn’t necessarily meant that it’s the Harvey of old on the mound. That said, he is worth a look against a Marlins team that struggles on most days. Christian Yelich and perhaps Derek Dietrich are worth consideration from the Marlins. The Mets are coming off a series where there bats got hot and with a favorable match up against Tom Koehler it could be time to jump on the bandwagon. Curtis Granderson, Neil Walker, and Asdrubal Cabrera are the top options from the team with Yoenis Cespedes, James Loney, and Wilmer Flores secondary choices.

Phillies get to face rookie making his second big league start

Joel De La Cruz had a bad first start and while the match up with the Phillies might be favorable, he’s still not someone we can trust as a SP option and it’s more likely that the Phillies will succeed than fail against him. Vegas has given the Phillies a run total of 4 3/4 runs, a number they seldom (if ever outside of Coors) see. The top five of the Phillies lineup is worth consideration as a team stack (Herrera, Bourjos, Asche, Franco, and Rupp). Jerad Eickhoff also makes for a good SP option as the Phillies are substantial favorites (-160) and he’s facing a Braves offense that is 29th in wOBA, 30th in ISO, and 30th in runs scored. The only Brave bat worth targeting is the usually consistent Freddie Freeman (.378 wOBA, .236 ISO).

Carlos Martinez great SP option against Pirates today

While he hasn’t been as strong as he was in 2015, Carlos Martinez is worthy of consideration in your cash and GPP lineups as he has a fairly favorable match up against the Pirates and is a significant favorite (-194) to get the win. Martinez struggles at times with LH bats but the Pirates only have two in their lineup and one of them is names John Jaso. Gregory Polanco is the other and he’s worth a look as a one off in your lineups but the rest of the Pirates lineup can be avoided. The Cardinals struggle against LHP but Jon Niese is about as bad as they come (4.51 SIERA, 15.8% K rate). Aledmys Diaz, Matt Holliday, and Stephen Piscotty are the three to build your lineups around if stacking them with Jhonny Peralta and Matt Carpenter secondary options.

Shields vs Sabathia to square off in classic pitchers duel (said no one ever)

James Shields and CC Sabathia at one time in their careers were among the top pitchers in the game. That is no longer the case and there should be plenty of runs scored today in Chicago when these two take the mound. Vegas has given the game a 9 1/2 run total with the Yankees slight favorites. Sabathia has an excellent 3.17 ERA this season but a SIERA of 4.65 and a sub 19% K rate. Shields is even worse with a SIERA just under 5 and a sub 18% K rate. Carlos Beltran returns to the Yankees lineup and along with Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann is a top option from their side. Brett Gardner, Chase Headley, Didi Gregorious, and Starlin Castro are secondary options – Alex Rodriguez has the day off. From the White Sox you’ll want to target RH bats as Sabathia has allowed a .343 wOBA and 28 HR’s to them over the past two seasons. Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier are the top two to target with Timothy Anderson, Melky Cabrera, Brett Lawrie, and Dioner Navarro all worth a look as part of a stack or one offs in your lineups.

Astros get plus match up against Wade Miley today

Seattle SP Wade Miley has an ERA topping five but it’s been even worse (over seven) the past 30 days. He gets to face a Astros line up built to crush LHP today in their hitter friendly park. The usual RH bats of George Springer, Jose Altuve, and Carlos Correa are where to start when using Astros in your lineups. The other RH bats of Marwin Gonzalez, Carlos Gomez, and Evan Gattis are secondary options. Lance McCullers is a high-risk, high-reward option at SP today. He comes in with a high K rate of 26.9% but the Mariners are ranked in the top 10 in every offensive metric against RHP. McCullers is worthy of GPP consideration as are the top five bats (Martin, Smith, Cano, Cruz, Seager) from the Mariners.

Cubs look to bounce back after disastrous series with Mets

The Cubs are coming off a four-game series where they were swept by the Mets and gave up 32 runs while doing so. They are back at home now and Vegas has them as substantial -234 favorites with Kyle Hendricks on the mound. It’s a favorable match up for Hendricks as he faces a Reds team that is 27th in wOBA and 24th in K%. Hendricks is definitely in play as a SP option for both cash and GPP’s and Reds hitters can be faded with the number of favorable hitting match ups out there this afternoon. The Cubs face Cody Reed who they pounded for seven runs in four innings recently. There should be more of the same today – Javier Baez leading off at a very favorable price point makes him a top option today along with Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras. Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell are secondary options. Ben Zobrist is getting the day off for the Cubs.

A's-Twins game should be a high-scoring affair

With Kendall Graveman and Ricky Nolasco on the mound today, Vegas expects some runs to be scored as they have given the game a hefty run total of 9 1/2 runs with the Twins slight favorites. Graveman has a 4.62 SIERA with a paltry 15.4% K rate. He’s also allowed a .340+ wOBA to both sides of the plate over the last two seasons. Eduardo Nunez, Brian Dozier, and Miguel Sano are the top choices from their lineup. Max Kepler is also worth a long look and if you want cheap exposure to the Twins, Eddie Rosario and Juan Centeno come in at or near minimum price albeit at the bottom of the order. Nolasco has allowed a .330+ wOBA to both sides of the plate over the last two seasons including .365 to RH bats. Josh Reddick, Danny Valencia, and Stephen Vogt are your top options for the A’s with Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie, and Khris Davis secondary choices to fill out a stack or get exposure to the A’s bats.

SP options in Angels-Rays game could surprise

Neither the Angels (although they did have a big series against the Red Sox) or Rays have offenses that overwhelm an opponent and as such the SP options in today’s game could be decent GPP options. Nick Tropeano has decent K upside (22%+) and faces a Rays team that is 24th in wOBA and 29th in ISO against RHP. Matt Moore is coming off a great start and has shown flashes at times this season. He faces an Angels team that is bottom half of the league in wOBA and ISO against LHP. That said, we’ll still want to target some of the bats in this game. Moore has allowed a .348 wOBA to RH bats the past two seasons making Mike Trout a top play. Yunel Escobar, Albert Pujols, and C.J. Cron are good choices to add to an Angels stack. Tropeano has been vulnerable to both sides of the plate (.330 wOBA allowed) which makes the top four (Forsythe, Miller, Longoria, Morrison) secondary GPP options.

David Ortiz

Boston Red Sox
7/04/16, 10:37 AM ET

Red Sox get to face the joy that is Nick Martinez

To say Nick Martinez is not a very good major league pitcher would be an understatement. Over his career he’s allowed a .340+ wOBA to both sides of the plate including a very unimpressive 18 innings this season where he has allowed 19 hits, 10 runs, walked 12, while striking out only 7. Factor in that he has to face the Red Sox in Fenway today and it’s easy to see why Vegas has given the home team a run total topping six runs. The entire Red Sox line up with the exception of perhaps Sandy Leon batting ninth (although you could make an argument for him considering he does have a .508 wOBA in a small sample size of 20 AB’s) is in play. David Ortiz and his .503 wOBA, .387 ISO is the clear top option but you can’t probably go wrong mixing in the RH bats of Betts, Pedroia, Bogaerts, and Ramirez at the top of lineup or mixing in the LH bats of Bradley, Holt, and Shaw from the bottom half. While Rick Porcello is a solid -190 favorite, the Rangers should still be able to score some runs off him. Shin-Soo Choo is a top option for them with Ian Desmond, Nomar Mazara, Adrian Beltre, Prince Fielder, and Rougned Odor all worth a look as part of a team stack or by themselves in a lineup.
