Sean O'Sullivan has a career 5.56 xFIP versus LHBs, while allowing a .390 wOBA

O’Sullivan is the prototypical gas-can that we love to attack. As much as O’Sullivan struggles versus LHBs, he has not been much better versus RHBs in his career (4.81 xFIP, .364 wOBA). Realistically, we can target any Angels batter in the order against O’Sullivan as they are currently implied to score 5.1 runs (third highest on the slate). Mike Trout (181 wRC+, .435 wOBA, .275 ISO vs RHP) is the elite option in the Angels order as he almost always is. C.J. Cron (130 wRC+, .361 wOBA, .195 ISO vs RHP) and Kole Calhoun (113 wRC+, .335 wOBA, .144 ISO vs RHP) are the other Angels bats that need to be included in any Angels stack as they are hitting in the top half of the order.

Noah Syndergaard

Chicago White Sox
7/03/16, 11:18 AM ET

Syndergaard has a 15.1% SwStr% and a 26.7% K-BB% on the season

Yes, you read those numbers correctly. As you can see, the advanced stats of Syndergaard (2.56 SIERA, 30.7% K%) are insanely good. However, there are two things keeping Syndergaard from being a slam dunk play today. One, he has a bone spur in his pitching elbow. And two, he takes on a strong offensive team in the Cubs. Now, it’s tough recommend Syndergaard for cash games given his circumstances but we should be more than willing to roster him in tournaments given that the masses may be scared off by the injury and matchup. A lot people are going to look at the game log of Syndergaard and assume his struggles in his last start (3.0 IP, 5 ER) were injury related. However, if we dig deeper into the numbers we’ll find that Syndergaard had an uncanny .700 BABIP in that start versus Washington. If still not comfortable taking a chance on Syndergaard in tournaments, feel free to fire up Anthony Rizzo (176 wRC+, .436 wOBA, .311 ISO vs RHP), Kris Bryant (147 wRC+, .393 wOBA, .274 ISO vs RHP), and company in hopes Syndergaard struggles again.

Corey Kluber

Boston Red Sox
7/03/16, 10:58 AM ET

Blue Jays strikeout 22.3% of the time versus RHP

Kluber (3.37 SIERA, 19.9% K-BB%) is an ace and has the capability to pitch a gem against any opponent. The Blue Jays have a ton of power, but they’re typically not one of these lineups that will string multiple hits together to produce runs. These boom-or-bust offenses are the type of lineup that Kluber can excel against given that he is only allowing a 31.6% FB% and a 26.6% Hard%. Not only does Kluber induce a ton of soft contact, he has a 25.2% K% and a 11.9% SwStr%, so the strikeout potential is certainly there against these Blue Jays. There are definitely safer pitching options for cash games but we should not hesitate to fire up Kluber in tournaments as he may go under-owned compared to the upside he provides.

Buster Posey

7/02/16, 8:34 PM ET

Denard Span remains OUT of the lineup tonight versus LHP Patrick Corbin

Corbin (4,51 SIERA) is surrendering entirely too much hard contact this season (38.6% Hard%). He is had major problems with right handed batters particularly (4.68 xFIP, 5.5% K-BB%). The Giants get a major ball bark bump escaping AT&T Park in a matchup against Corbin at hitter-friendly Chase Field. The Giants also have some bats that can take advantage of Corbin and his hard contact problems. Buster Posey (150 wRC+, .387 wOBA, .213 ISO vs LHP) gets the nod as the top overall play in the Giants lineup. Brandon Belt (153 wRC+, .391 wOBA, .256 ISO vs LHP) is a great secondary play but gets knocked down a notch due to Corbin being more than competent versus LHBs. Mac Williamson (107 wRC+, .323 wOBA, .214 ISO vs LHP) gets a decent spot in the lineup and makes for a solid OF value play. Angel Pagan (108 wRC+, .325 wOBA vs LHP)) is a little pricey for his skill-set but can definitely be considered in Giants stacks.

Robinson Cano

Atlanta Braves
7/02/16, 7:13 PM ET

Cano has a 175 wRC+, .427 wOBA, .302 ISO versus RHP this season

Cano has crushed RHP this year and hasn’t allowed Safeco Field to contain his home run power. He gets a great matchup tonight as Tyler Wilson is set to start for the Orioles. Wilson (4.99 SIERA, 6.6% K-BB%) has not pitched particularly well this season. Wilson surrenders a lot of contact and doesn’t miss many bats as he only has a 6.7% SwStr%. The Mariners offense is a great spot to target batters on the night slate and may even go a little overlooked. Outside of Cano, Kyle Seager (165 wRC+, .413 wOBA, .285 ISO vs RHP) and Dae-Ho Lee (142 wRC+, .379 wOBA, .227 ISO vs RHP) are must plays in any Seattle stack given their power upside. Nelson Cruz (126 wRC+, .355 wOBA, .187 ISO) hits LHP much better than RHP but is still in consideration due to his ability to hit a bomb off anyone at anytime.

Hanley Ramirez

Cleveland Guardians
7/02/16, 6:37 PM ET

Red Sox have the highest implied run total on tonight's slate (5.6)

Hector Santiago is struggling a ton with hard contact (35.2% Hard%) and is a fly ball pitcher (45.7% FB%). This is a combination that Santiago can get away with at home in Angels Stadium but a matchup with the Red Sox at Fenway should be a different story. Santiago has also struggled a ton with RHBs this season (5.20 xFIP, .345 wOBA allowed). The Red Sox implied to score the most runs on the slate so a full Red Sox stack is completely justifiable. The top targets that we want to consider are Hanley Ramirez (155 wRC+, .411 wOBA, .237 ISO vs LHP) and Xander Bogaerts (147 wRC+, .399 wOBA, .154 ISO vs LHP). Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia can also be considered for stacks batting at the top of the Red Sox order.

Joey Votto

Cincinnati Reds
7/02/16, 6:31 PM ET

Votto a late scratch from Reds starting lineup Saturday night

Votto was scratched from tonight’s lineup with a shoulder injury. Jose Peraza will slide into the two-hole and play LF. Adam Duvall (122 wRC+, .360 wOBA, .341 ISO vs RHP) replaces Votto at 1B and makes for an interesting play against Joe Ross batting clean up.

Bartolo Colon is allowing a 45.1% Hard% to LHBs this season

Colon (4,32 SIERA) is allowing a ton of hard contact, especially to left handed batters. The Cubs offense draw a ton of walks but are susceptible to striking out (11.1% BB%, 22.7% K% vs RHP). Luckily for the Cubs, Colon only has a 5.5% SwStr% this season leaving room for some decent upside with all the contact Colon allows. A full Cubs stack may not be the way to go since Colon seems to always find a way not to get blown up. However, targeting a few of the Cubs lefties could prove to be a nice strategy. Anthony Rizzo (172 wRC+, .431 wOBA, .302 ISO vs RHP) is the top option on the Cubs offense batting clean up. Kris Bryant (149 wRC+, .396 wOBA, .279 ISO vs RHP) and Ben Zobrist (134 wRC+, .375 wOBA, .171 ISO vs RHP) make for good plays as one offs or even a part of a Cubs mini-stack.

Daniel Murphy

Colorado Rockies
7/02/16, 5:20 PM ET

Nationals have the second highest implied run total on tonight's slate (5.1)

Straily (4.80 SIERA) is coming off a rough outing against the Cubs where he allowed 7 ER in 3.2 IP. Straily has struggled mightily versus LHBs this season (5.92 xFIP, 1.5% K-BB%). Straily is also allowing an above average fly ball rate (41.4% FB%). We can really target any of these Nationals left handed bats in cash games and tournaments. Daniel Murphy (177 wRC+, .438 wOBA, .271 ISO vs RHP) and Bryce Harper (138 wRC+, .380 wOBA, .228 ISO vs RHP) are going to the popular plays in this matchup and deservedly so. Wilson Ramos (169 wRC+, .426 wOBA, .214 ISO vs RHP) is one of the top catcher plays on the entire slate if looking to pay up at the position. We can even look to Stephen Drew (117 wRC+, .349 wOBA, .297 ISO vs RHP) as a decent punt in tournaments.

Justin Verlander

Detroit Tigers
7/02/16, 2:28 PM ET

Rays strikeout at a 25.1% clip versus RHP

Verlander (3.76 SIERA, 25.2% K%) got shelled in his last start, allowing 8 ER in just 4.2 IP to the red-hot Cleveland Indians. However, this time around he gets to face the strikeout-happy Rays offense that has had its struggles versus RHP this season (90 wRC+, .302 wOBA). Verlander has posted his highest SwStr% since 2012 (11.3%) thus far this season and has massive strikeout upside in this matchup. The primary concern with Verlander is his high 46.8% FB% but that concern will be limited given the ballpark upgrade that Tropicana Field provides to pitchers. There are much better spots to look for offense on the early slate, but if searching for a contrarian one off in tournaments, Evan Longoria (129 wRC+, .360 wOBA, .264 ISO vs RHP) and Corey Dickerson (.269 ISO vs RHP) can be considered given their power upside.

Chris Sale

Atlanta Braves
7/02/16, 12:50 PM ET

Sale has the lowest SwStr% of his career (9.9%)

Sale has made it blatantly obvious that he is trying to pitch more to contact this season. It’s been working for him for the most part, but Sale does have a low .256 BABIP and a high 81.8% LOB%, so regression could very well be on it’s way. Sale has still managed a 24.6% K% so there may still be some upside to be had against an Astros team that strikes out 24.5% of the time versus LHP. Sale is still one of the top starting pitcher plays on the board in the early slate, but we could maybe find a couple low cost Astros bats to use in tournaments as leverage one off plays. George Springer (125 wRC+, .360 wOBA, .203 ISO vs LHP) has a discounted price and is as likely as any Astro to put one in the Crawford boxes. Marwin Gonzalez (115 wRC+, .345 wOBA, .213 ISO vs LHP) is relatively cheap and gets the bump up to the two-hole in the Astros order. Evan Gattis (111 wRC+, .340 wOBA, .282 ISO vs LHP) has some pop and could make for a nice contrarian play at a shallow catcher position.
