Twins Stack

The Twins get the left handed Wade Leblanc today. The Twins have been really good this year against left handed pitching. They are currently 6th in ISO and 3rd in wOBA to left handed pitching. This season Leblanc has a 15% strikeout rate, 42% hard hit rate, and 43% fly ball rate. I think the Twins are a great stack option today in GPPs.

Sneaky Nats Stack

Today the Nationals get Jon Lester on the mound. Although Lester has pitcher fairly well in his last few starts, I believe the Nationals could present some problems for him. The Nationals have been good against left handed pitching this season ranking 8th in ISO and 5th in wOBA. They also have some great speed in this lineup and I love targeting stolen bases against Jon Lester. I believe this stack should be really low owned in GPPs. My three favorite plays are Trae Turner, Victor Robles, and Anthony Rendon.

Christian Yelich

Top Bat on The Slate

Christian Yelich is one of my favorite one offs on the slate. I think that out of the top three outfielders: Trout, Yelich, and Springer, he will be the lowest owned. He faces off against Kevin Gausmen who is more of a reverse splits pitcher, but Yelich has been so good this season that it doesn’t matter. Yelich against right handed pitching this season has a 465 ISO, 542 wOBA, and a 64% hard hit rate. He is in a great hitters ball park with warm weather today, so I love this spot for him in GPPs.

Nick Margevicius

Lefties Against The Pirates

The lefty Nick Margevicius will take the mound for the Padres today. This is more of a price and matchup play today. This season the Pirates have really struggled against left handed pitching. They rank 28th in wOBA, 29th in ISO, and have a 27% strikeout rate to lefties this year. Margevicius doesn’t have big strikeout upside but I think since this is in San Diego, a great pitchers ball park, he could pay off his cheap price tag.

Khris Davis scratched Saturday; Robbie Grossman replaces

Davis has been scratched from the Oakland Athletics original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Robbie Grossman, who will now play left field and slot into the sixth spot in the order, which shuffles quite a few players around in the Athletics order but, most notably, bumps Mark Canha all the way up to the two-hole. So, be sure to double check the Starting Lineups page for the updated lineup as Oakland faces off against left-hander Matt Boyd on the road this afternoon.

Mike Trout

Almost Boring

It can almost be boring at times talking about how good Mike Trout is at baseball. It’s been a bit of a “down” year for Trout as he’s the owner of a .426 wOBA but he’s been a bit unfortunate with balls in play and owns the league’s fifth highest xWOBA (.456). It can’t be understated how great of a power spot this is for Trout against Jakob Junis who has struggled mightily with the long ball in his career with HR-to-flyball ratio north of 16% each of the last two seasons.

Griffin Canning

Embrace the Discomfort

If you don’t feel comfortable with any of Saturday’s high-priced options opting for a lower priced starting pitcher is a viable strategy. Enter Griffin Canning who is way too cheap on FanDuel ($6,800) and has an acceptable price tag on DraftKings as well ($8,500). Despite a 5.65 ERA, Canning has been filthy at times through three starts with the slate’s top whiff rate (17.8%) and an extremely strong 30.7% strikeout rate. The Royals have been pesky at times this season but it’s promising their implied run total has dropped to 3.9 after opening at 4.2.

Madison Bumgarner

Arizona Diamondbacks
5/18/19, 12:25 PM ET

Cheapest of the Bunch

Saturday is a tough pitching slate to decipher without much appeal up top as all three of Stephen Strasburg, Madison Bumgarner and Jose Berrios draw tough matchups. If there’s no clear cut top option, I’ll typically opt to save a little salary when possible and Bumgarner gives us that opportunity as he offers a significant discount to both Strasburg and Berrios. While it’s still a tough matchup for Bumgarner against the Diamondbacks, the Giants southpaw has been solid this season with a 25.3% strikeout rate and 3.55 SIERA.

Brandon Belt

Attacking a Struggling Pitcher with Power

It’s a very seldom occurrence to recommend any San Francisco Giants players, but today Belt is just too cheap for the matchup. Zach Godley has really struggled this season as evidenced by his 5.46 xfip and 42.5% hard contact so far. Belt is sitting at a 19% K rate, .299 iso, and a .395 woba against right handed pitching. Furthermore, we know that Godley will primarily be throwing the curveball and Belt is getting really good contact and the exit velocity is right where we want it to be. I like Belt in Arizona to go deep today, especially with the roof open.

Manny Machado

San Diego Padres
5/18/19, 10:41 AM ET

Great Matchup

The “opener” trend continues to gain steam, as the Pirates will start DuRapau against the padres tonight. Don’t expect him to pitch more than an inning or two, and Steven Brault is expected to follow. So far in his MLB career, Brault has allowed a .368 wOBA and a 36% hard contact rate against RHBs. He got shelled in his last outing against the Cardinals, as well. This is a tough matchup for him against a RH-heavy Padres lineup, making the Padres a very intriguing squad here. It’s a limited sample size, but Manny Machado has a ridiculous .610 wOBA and .692 ISO against lefties this year, while Wil Myers also has great numbers. They are my two favorite options from this team, and I like the sneaky GPP stack appeal of the whole offense.

C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels

Lefty Masher Alert!

Don’t sleep on C.J. Cron this evening. He draws a fine matchup against a mediocre lefty starter in Wade LeBlanc, and Cron has quietly been raking against left-handed pitchers. He is hitting .346 against them this year to go along with a .455 wOBA, .385 ISO, and 1.131 OPS with nearly as many walks as strikeouts. The numbers are elite across the board, and he’s hitting cleanup for a very dangerous offense. This is a lock and load play.
