Cleveland Cavaliers
So much for a championship hangover. The Cavaliers opened their season with a dominating victor over the Knicks at home. The big three all had big fantasy outings and it’s clear that they are going to be running the show offensively. Even in a slower paced game against New York, the three combined 51 shot attempts and 20 assists. Tyronn Lue has made a concerted effort to get Kevin Love more involved and he is playing with a confidence that we haven’t seen from him in his time with the Cavaliers. Cleveland’s backup point guard (Kay Felder) didn’t suit up in the opener, but is probable to play tonight, while Iman Shumpert is questionable after suffering a concussion.
The Cavaliers are listed as 2-point favorites tonight against the Raptors in what is expected to be a defensive battle. Toronto is always a difficult place to play and the Raptors were a top five defense last season. If you look at the DvP table above, you can see that they were ranked 13th or better in fantasy points allowed to each of the five positions on the floor. While I was impressed with the Cavaliers’ offense in their season opener, they have the ninth highest implied total in the slate tonight. Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, and Kevin Love should continue to account for most of the fantasy production, but this isn’t the best game environment. All three are better GPP options than they are cash game options. Love is my favorite of the three, as he will match up against rookie Pascal Siakam.

Toronto Raptors
The Raptors picked up an easy win in their season opener, beating the Pistons 109-91. There wasn’t anything particularly noteworthy about the game, although Jonas Valanciunas could be primed for a career year. I mentioned the other day that Andre Drummond is a lazy defender at times and Valanciunas seemed to beat him to every loose ball. Jared Sullinger is going to be out for an extended period of time and it appears that the Raptors will employ a timeshare at power forward. Pascal Siakam started and played 22 minutes, while Patrick Patterson came off the bench and played 26.
The Raptors typically have one of the best home-court advantages in the NBA and they will need all the help that they can get tonight, as they square off against the defending champions. This is one of those games that should be great for the casual NBA fan, but it doesn’t exactly peak the interest of the DFS community. The Cavaliers are one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. Last season, they held their opponents to the fourth fewest fantasy points per game. If I absolutely had to play someone from the Raptors, it would be Kyle Lowry. In three games against Cleveland last season, he averaged 55.6 FD fantasy points per contest. Kyrie Irving has never been known as an elite defender.

Orlando Magic
The Magic opened their season with a loss at home against the Heat. They may still be a couple of years away before we see them back in playoff contention in the Eastern Conference. There were a few interesting takeaways from their season opener. Frank Vogel looks like he is going to have a tight rotation, as all five starters played at least 35 minutes. Only eight players saw the floor and Jeff Green was really the only difference maker off the bench. After trading for Serge Ibaka in the offseason, they are making a concerted effort to keep him involved in the offense. He had 17 shot attempts against the Heat, which was second only to Evan Fournier.
The Magic come into tonight’s game as 4-point underdogs against the Pistons in what is expected to be one of the lowest scoring games in the slate. Orlando has an implied total of 97.3 points, which is the second lowest on the board. Detroit plays at a relatively slow pace and they are projected to have an above-average defense this season. Elfrid Payton struggled in the opener, but it wasn’t the best matchup for him. He is at his best when he is in the paint, attacking the rim and making plays for his teammates. It’s hard to do that with Hassan Whiteside patrolling the paint. This is a nice bounce back spot for Payton, who I’m high on this season. I’m also interested in Nikola Vucevic against Andre Drummond, although his minutes could go down a bit with Bismack Biyombo returning from his one-game suspension.

Detroit Pistons
The Pistons stayed competitive against the Raptors for a couple of quarters, but it eventually turned into a blowout. As I mentioned earlier, Toronto is one of the toughest places to play for visiting teams. Andre Drummond only played 24 minutes in that game, but don’t be alarmed. He got into foul trouble early and could never quite get into a rhythm. Ish Smith will continue to get all of the minutes that he can handle at point guard, as the Pistons will be without Reggie Jackson for the foreseeable future. Detroit did not get a lot from their bench in the first game of the season, which may result in more minutes for the starters.
The Pistons come into tonight’s game as 4-point favorites against the Magic, who forgot to show up defensively against the Heat. I’m still expecting this to be an average matchup at best moving forward, especially with Bismack Biyombo in the mix. Detroit has an implied total of 101.3 points, which is slightly below the average of the 16 teams in action tonight. Ish Smith didn’t crack the 20 fantasy point mark against the Raptors, but draws a much better matchup against Elfrid Payton. He is an elite value play on DraftKings where he is still priced as a backup. I’m not too interested in the three wing players here, but it could be a great spot to buy low on Andre Drummond. In his last seven games against the Magic, he has averaged 43 FD fantasy points.

Indiana Pacers
The Pacers outlasted the Mavericks in their opener, winning by nine points in overtime. When looking at their box score, keep in mind that their fantasy production is a bit skewed by the fact that the game had five extra minutes after regulation. Nate McMilan had a tight rotation, playing each of his starters at least 32 minutes in regulation. The sample size is small, but it appears that there may be enough shots to go around in this offense. I mentioned Myles Turner as one of my favorite GPP plays the other day, but I was not expecting that type of performance. He is going to take a leap forward this season and become a household name.
The Pacers come into tonight’s game as 6.5-point favorites against the Nets in what is expected to be one of the highest scoring games in the slate. Indiana has an implied point total of 110.5 points, which is the third highest of the 16 teams in action. This is a favorable matchup by all accounts, as the Nets lack talent on both ends of the floor. As long as this game stays close, it should be a gold mine for fantasy production. The backcourt duo of Jeff Teague and Monta Ellis played well together against the Mavericks, but I still expect Paul George to be the primary playmaker in this offense. For now, I see Teague and Ellis as GPP options. George is the best fantasy option from the Pacers, but he is certainly priced up. I slightly prefer him on DraftKings where he is $8,400. Fresh off of a 60 fantasy point outing in the season opener, Myles Turner price went up across the industry. People may be hesitant to play him after the price bump, but I will be going right back to the well against this weak frontcourt of the Nets. I should also mention that this is a revenge spot for Thaddeus Young.

Brooklyn Nets
The Nets got in a big hole against the Celtics, but they slowly climbed out of it and made the game competitive late in the fourth quarter. This team has one of the lowest win projections in the NBA and it’s hard to see them outperforming expectations. If you look at their game log against Boston, it is a bit misleading. The bench got the team back in the game, which is why there wasn’t a single starter that played more than 28 minutes. I expect their rotation to be much tighter moving forward (assuming they can stay competitive in games).
The Nets are sizable underdogs tonight against the Pacers, but the spread is low enough that I’m not expecting a blowout. The Pacers used to be a top five defense, but have since morphed into more of a fast-paced style of play. They also lost their best low post defender in Ian Mahinmi. The fact that this ragtag group of players has the eighth highest implied point total is telling. Jeremy Lin should play 32-36 minutes moving forward and he will be one of the primary options offensively. He’s not exactly priced at a discount though, so I wouldn’t use him in cash games. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 27 fantasy points in the opener and led the team in shot attempts. If that volume continues tonight, he will be a great value play on both FanDuel and DraftKings. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is worth keeping an eye on, but there are better values at small forward.

Phoenix Suns
The Suns looked more like they were playing a game in the dog days of February than they did a season opener at home. Devin Booker got into foul trouble in the first half and after two quarters, the Suns were down by 20 against the Kings. The worst part was that DeMarcus Cousins was in foul trouble as well. Earl Watson will want a much better effort tonight against the Thunder, but this is something that the Suns have struggled with for a couple of seasons now. The only note that I took from their first game was that Brandon Knight, Eric Bledsoe, and Devin Booker may all play 30+ minutes a night.
The Suns are 9-point underdogs tonight against the Thunder, but all is not lost. If they can keep the game competitive, there should be fantasy goodness on both sides of the ball. Both of these teams are young and they both like to get out into transition. Everyone is obviously going to be targeting Russell Westbrook, but this game has sneaky shootout potential and is one that we can stack in tournaments. On paper, this is a great spot for Eric Bledsoe. He is a playmaking point guard that is at his best in the open floor. The major concern here is potential foul trouble defending Westbrook. Devin Booker burned a lot of DFS players on Wednesday and many will be hesitant to go back to the well. I project him to have a breakout season and I always like to be on players too early rather than too late. T.J. Warren is a decent value at small forward, but I’m not sure the upside is there. I will be avoiding the Suns’ frontcourt here, as the Thunder should be one of the best rebounding teams in the NBA again this year.

Oklahoma City Thunder
I’d like to start by talking about the GOAT, Russell Westbrook. Yes, he is great. And yes, he could end up averaging close to a triple-double this season. But, how about the Sixers’ fan that gave him the double-bird. It wasn’t like the game was close in the fourth quarter and that bucket put the Thunder ahead. It was in the first quarter. If you haven’t seen the clip, check it out on YouTube or Twitter. Anyway, back to the Thunder. Victor Oladipo had a horrendous debut with his new team, but he is going to put up a ton of shots in this offense. Steven Adams is still one of the most underrated players in the NBA. In addition to being a great defender and a great rebounder, he is going to get a lot of easy buckets at the rim, courtesy of Sir Westbrook. We can all agree that Westbrook deserves to be knighted, right? With DraftKings now in the UK, maybe they can make that happen.
The Thunder draw a favorable matchup tonight against the Suns, who were one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA last season. If their opener against the Kings was any indication, that should be the case again this season. Oklahoma City is projected to score 109 and once again, I want to point out that this is without Kevin Durant. Even after Anthony Davis scored 1,742 fantasy points against the Nuggets, Russell Westbrook is still the best fantasy option on a nightly basis. His price is only going to go up from here. A few weeks from now, we will be saying “remember when Westbrook was only $12,000?” Victor Oladipo is still a bit pricey for cash games, but his upside puts him into play in GPPs. Steven Adams is a great play in all formats, especially on FanDuel at only $4,800.

Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets picked up a win over the Bucks in their first game of the season. They had a pretty deep rotation with nine players seeing at least 13 minutes of action. Frank Kaminsky and Brian Roberts could both be back in the mix tonight, which doesn’t help the cause. I had three takeaways from their first game. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist looked like a polished offensive player, which is something we have never seen from him before. Roy Hibbert appears to be playing with a newfound motivation and he even logged 32 minutes in the opener. Kemba Walker will be a strong fantasy option at home this season, but his splits make him a tough play on the road unless the matchup is ideal.
The Hornets draw one of the worst possible matchups tonight, as they square off against the Heat. Miami is expected to play at a faster pace this season, but they should still be efficient on the defensive end of the floor. Charlotte has an implied total of only 98 points, which is the third lowest in the slate. There really isn’t a weak link in the Heat defense. As I mentioned, Kemba Walker is a risky play on the road. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is the one player that peaks my interest, but there is a good chance that his ownership will be inflated after his 44 fantasy point outing against the Bucks.

Miami Heat
The Heat played well in their season opener, beating the Magic in Orlando. We have heard that they are going to a more uptempo style of offense this season and their pace was considerably faster than it was last season. Any concerns about Hassan Whiteside being complacent after signing that big contract were squashed, as he had 18 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks in his first game. The biggest surprise for me was Justise Winslow. He was one of those players that could see 35 minutes and have ten fantasy points last season. He looks more comfortable with his shot and he can finish at the rim.
The Heat draw a fairly difficult matchup tonight against the Hornets. This game is expected to be played at a slow pace and the total is set at only 198. The Heat have an implied total of 100 points, which is the fifth lowest in the slate. I expect Goran Dragic to have a monster fantasy outing soon, but Kemba Walker is an above-average defender. Dragic is best suited as a GPP play tonight. Justise Winslow is an appealing small forward value, especially if he continues to see minutes in the mid-30s. Hassan Whiteside has as much upside as any center in the slate and his price isn’t outrageous on FanDuel or DraftKings. He is a borderline elite play on both sites.
