Hot Bat With A Great Matchup

Freddie Freeman in the month of June has been absolutely crushing the baseball. He has a 410 ISO, and a 464 wOBA, with 8 home runs and 24 RBI’s. He gets a great matchup against Anibal Sanchez who has struggled against left handed hitters; giving up 292 ISO, 390 wOBA, and an 11% walk rate. Freeman is by far one of my favorite overall bats on the slate in GPPs.

Stack The Lefties

The Dodgers are a stack that I like today especially the left handed bats. They go up against Paul Lambert who in a small sample is giving up a 263 ISO, 347wOBA, and 41% Hard hit rate to left handed bats. The Dodgers have three lefties with ISO’s 255 or above against right handed pitchers. It’s only a five game slate, but with Texas coming in at a high ownership we might get lower ownership on guys like Joc, Bellinger, Muncy in GPPs.

Cheap Upside Pitcher

On this slate pitching is really tough, especially on two pitcher sites. One guy who definitely has upside at his price is Mike Foltynewicz. If you look at his last five starts the numbers are a little more encouraging with his strikeout rate going up to 26% and his swinging strike rate to 12.2%, with at least 5+ strikeouts in all five games. In his last three games they have let Foltynewicz go at least 96 pitches or more which is encouraging to see. His DraftKings price is too cheap at 6400 so I really like him there, but he is in play on all sites in GPPs.

Too Much Power

On this small five game slate Texas should be a very chalky stack, so my pivot is the Yankees. The Yankees are just starting to get healthy with Judge and Stanton returning to the lineup which adds more right handed power to the mix. They face off against the lefty Wade Miley who against righties has a low strikeout rate at 18.4%, 33 % fly ball rate, and a 41% hard hit rate. All of the right handed power bats are in play but my four favorite are Judge, Stanton, LeMahieu, and Encarnacion in my stacks.

Travis d'Arnaud scratched Saturday; Mike Zunino replaces

d’Arnaud has been scratched from the Tampa Bay Rays original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the Oakland Athletics due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Mike Zunino, who will now handle the catching duties and slot directly into d’Arnaud’s vacated ninth spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Rays lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against right-hander Mike Fiers on the road this afternoon.

Jonathan Schoop (ankle) scratched Saturday; Luis Arraez replaces

Schoop has been scratched from the Minnesota Twins original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the Kansas City Royals due to a sore right ankle. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Luis Arraez, who will now play second base and slot directly into Schoops’s vacated eighth spot in the order. However, the remainder of the Twins lineup will stay intact offensively as they face off against left-hander Danny Duffy on the road this afternoon.

Bad Starter + Bad Bullpen = Offense

We haven’t seen much of Odrisamer Despaigne, simply because he’s not a good enough pitcher to stick in major league rotations. Over the past two seasons, he’s struck out just 17% of left-handed batters and that number is all the way down at 11.7% for his career. The White Sox have a below average bullpen behind him and are in the toughest hitting ballpark on this slate. The Rangers lefty power bats look way too cheap for this matchup on almost all sites. My first choice of the cheaper options is Asdrubal Cabrera with his switch hitting capabilities, as Chicago has three lefties in the bullpen behind Despaigne. On Yahoo, Cabrera is priced up, so you can shift to Rougned Odor or Ronald Guzman. While they have strikeout risk, they both maintain power upside even against lefties.

Reds in nice spot vs. Chacin in Miller Park

After posting a solid 3.50 ERA in 2018, Chacin has heavily regressed with a 5.60 ERA, 5.62 xFIP and 5.50 SIERA with a 6.7% K-BB in 2019. Chacin has just a 7.3% SwStr, a 34.4% GB rate and 43.6% hard contact rate with a .352 xwOBA allowed. His last start came on 6/17 after a short stint on the DL with a back issue; he allowed 9 baserunners (6 hits, 3 walks) in just 4 2/3 innings in a matchup with the Padres in San Diego. Chacin has long been more vulnerable vs. lefties; he’s allowed a .358 xwOBA to lefties since 2017, compared to a .287 xwOBA vs. righties. Derek Dietrich (.399 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Jesse Winker (.355), Joey Votto (.329) and Tucker Barnhart (.273) are all left-handed bats that are intriguing plays vs. Chacin in Miller Park this afternoon. Eugenio Suarez (111 wRC+ vs. RHP since 2018) and Yasiel Puig (117 wRC+ vs. RHP since 2018) are also good plays given the matchup and environment. The Reds have a 4.16 implied line vs. Chacin, which feels low and might help them fly a bit under the radar this afternoon.

Tommy Milone

Tommy Milone has made clear improvements, gets nice matchup vs. Orioles

Tommy Milone is another pitcher that has made some clear adjustments in 2019 and has so far been much more effective. Over 32 2/3 innings in 2019 he has a 3.03 ERA, 4.05 xFIP and 3.66 SIERA with a 25.4% K rate, 4% BB rate and 10.2% SwStr. More impressively, Statcast has him at a .273 xwOBA allowed, 9% barrel rate and 87.1 MPH aEV. So, what has changed? Milone has decreased his four seamer usage from 58.6% to 40% this year. He’s increased is changeup usage to 36.9%, which so far has just a .190 xwOBA allowed. He’s also completely ditched the sinker and cutter, which he threw (ineffectively) in past years. Milone gets a matchup with the Orioles who have an ugly 83 wRC+ and 25.7% K rate vs. left-handed pitching in 2019. They’ve also been cold with a 2nd worst .270 xwOBA over the past 14 days. Milone will have the benefit of pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park in his favor and will cost just $7.9k on Draftkings and $7.1k on Fanduel. There aren’t many good pitching options on the afternoon slate, so it isn’t likely that Milone flies under the radar in this matchup.

Hyun-Jin Ryu

Miles Ahead of the Pack

I can’t remember a slate where I have liked one pitcher so much more than the rest of the available options. It’s partly a testament to how poor the pitching options are on this five game evening slate, but it’s also a testament to just how good Ryu has been this season. Ryu has been absolutely dominant this year, with ridiculous numbers that include a 1.26 ERA, 2.85 xFIP, 51% ground ball rate, and an absurd 85/5 K/BB ratio. The guy has FIVE WALKS in 93 innings. Wow. Dave Roberts also seems to give him a longer leash than the other pitchers in this rotation, and the Rockies are vulnerable against left-handed pitching. The big question is why Ryu has been so much more dominant this year. I was looking through his pitch mix on FanGraphs this morning, and I noticed that he has increased his changeup usage by 8% this year, from 18.6% of his overall pitches to 26.6% of his overall pitches. Perhaps that’s part of it, but the command is simply otherworldly. In short: play Ryu in all formats. He is head and shoulders above the rest of the options tonight.
