Harris English could go overlooked this week

Like many players on tour poor play had begun to take its toll on Harris English’s game. This two time PGA tour winner finished a career-worst 118th in the FedEx Cup standings last season. English played 27 events in 2017 and managed to only make 15 cuts while posting 4 top 25 finishes. The 28-year-old has emerged with solid form this season and appears to be on the rebound. With a T11 at the CareerBuilder and a T8 at this year’s Farmers, English heads into this week with a bit of new found confidence. English is six for six at the TPC Scottsdale including three top 15 or better finishes. Currently predicted to have a low ownership, English makes for a great mid-tier pivot play in almost any format.

Peter Uihlein looks to rebound from a missed cut

Inconsistent play has been the underlying theme to the early part of Peter Uihlein’s rookie debut on the PGA Tour. In six starts this season, Uihlein has only made three cuts and has three top 20 or better finishes. Currently ranked inside the top 60 in the FedEx Cup standings, Uihlein has made the most of his opportunities when he makes the cut. Unfortunately last week, Uihlein let a very promising opening round of four under par go to waste as he played poorly on Friday in route to missing his third cut of the season. Considered by many to be a player worth watching this season, Uihlein should provide value at his affordable salary this week. Priced accordingly for his up and down play, this son of the one of the most powerful golf CEO’s in the world makes for a great boom or bust GPP play this week. If his early-week ownership projections stay the same throughout the week, there is a chance that you could the desirable combination of affordability and low ownership.

J.J. Henry not longer in the field at The Waste Management Open

J.J. Henry has withdrawn from The Waste Management Open and will be replaced by Tom Hoge. At this time there has been no reason given to the nature of Henry’s withdrawal. Due to the timing of his entry, Hoge will not be in this week’s pricing pool. For the time being please get Henry out of your lineups, and we will keep an eye on his status moving forward.

DraftKings projections are live and Francesco Molinari ranks as a top play

Projections are live for The Waste Management Phoenix Open are live and Francesco Molinari ranks near the top in terms of Pt/$/K on DraftKings. Currently ranked 22nd in the official world rankings, Molinari is somewhat underpriced in comparison to his talent level. Coming off a year in which he played 21 PGA Tour events, it appears that Molinari has decided to make spend most of his time playing in the states. This former WGC champion posted 14 top 25 or better finishes last season earning him enough points to finish in the 37th position in the year-end FedEx Cup race. Strokes gained tee to green should end up being a very popular metric to attack this week in terms of what stats to look at, and Molinari finished 10th in that category last season. For what he lacks in length off the tee, Molinari makes up for in great iron play and solid putting. Molinari only appearance at the Waste Management Open resulted in a T22. As always finding value will be a key factor if you are looking to fit in one or two of the top priced players, and Molinari projects to be one of the better plays in this week’s field.

PGA rosters lock in 20 minutes, and no major news to report

Rosters lock at 12:00 est time today, so if you have any last minute roster edits please do so at this time. Injury recap: Ben Crane withdrew this morning so please remove him from any roster builds. As of now we still have no further news on Jason Day. The former number one player in the world withdrew from the Wednesday Pro-Am, but at this point, he appears ready to play. The risk of him not finishing the tournament due to injury is real, but if he is, in fact, healthy Day would make for a great tournament play this week. Prior to the news on Wednesday, Day was trading as a popular play this week, but many in the community have since jumped ship and he can now be had at a very manageable ownership number.

Weather update for The Farmers Insurance Open

RotoGrinders own Chief Meteorologist Kevin Roth has a weather report up for the Farmers Insurance Open in the main forum. While Roth predicts the wind could be in play this week and most notably on Friday afternoon there should not be too much of an edge gained by favoring one wave over another. Overall the weather in San Diego should be fairly consistent with Friday’s wind gust only predicted to reach 15mph.

Tony Finau ranks as a top-mid tier play among experts

Pricing on DraftKings this week could force a large majority of players to construct a balanced lineup approach for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open. Tony Finau should be a popular pick for this type of roster construction as he holds down the overall number one ranking in The DraftKings mid-tier rankings this week. Known for his ability to hit long tee shots, Finau is an easy fit for a course that should favor length off the tee. Over the past three seasons, Finau has proven to be more than just a bomber. Surprisingly one of the more consistent golfers on tour, Finau has finished inside the top 45 in the final FedEx Cup standings in each of the last three seasons. Searching for his second PGA Tour win, Finau will look to build on a 2017 season in which he earned almost three million dollars and amassed 12 top 25 or better finishes. Finau is three for three in cuts made at Torrey Pines including a T4 last season. The combination of his talent and the reasonable price tag make Finau a great play in all formats this week.

Chesson Hadley ranks as a top value play among experts

For the most part, Chesson Hadley continues to receive a price tag that is low in comparison to his recent play. Hadley regained full-time status for this season via an excellent 2017 season on the Web.com Tour. As a past winner of the PGA Tour Chesson Hadley has the game to win on tour, and his great start to the season serves as a clear reminder that he should be considered for your roster builds. Currently ranked 13th in the FedEx Cup standings, Hadley started off the fall season with 3 top 4 or better finishes in a row. Hadley comes into this week after posting back to back top 45 finishes in his last two starts and should be able to pay off his salary if he does that again this week. From the start of last season until now Hadley’s performances from the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour combined reads as follows: 35 starts, 2 wins, 9 top tens, and only 9 missed cuts. At $6,800 Hadley provides both consistency and upside making him a great value option for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Jason Day did not play in the Pro-Am on Wednesday due to a sore back and was replaced Whee Kim. This is the first news of Day having back pains, so we will keep an eye on any further developments.

Jon Rahm projects as a top play on FanDuel

Top priced players very rarely find themselves at the top of the Pt$K rankings in our projection models. At this point, it’s safe to say that Jon Rahm is not your typical PGA tour player. Rahm’s come from behind win at last years Farmer Insurance Open marked his first win on tour, and if he can go back to back and win again this week, Rahm will ascend into the number one spot in the official world golf rankings. Dating back to the start of last season, Rahm has played in 26 PGA tour events. During that span, he has two wins, sixteen top 25’s and only two missed cuts. Rahm will be a hard person to fade moving forward and his placement at the top of both the pricing list and the Pt/$K list is a testament to the level of his performance over the last 18 months.

Brandt Snedeker could go overlooked this week

The relationship between pricing and ownership plays a unique role in the world of daily fantasy sports. Due to the volatility of golf, ownership can be used to help gain an edge in roster building. It’s not uncommon to see a low owned pivot play come through and make a difference week in and week out during the PGA season. Fueled mostly by a recency biases, the DFS community will often overlook a player in a good spot if there is an appearance of bad form. Brandt Snedeker could be that player this week. Plagued by injuries towards the end of last season, Snedeker is off to a slow start this season. As a two time winner of this event, Snedeker has a track record that deserves more attention than he is currently receiving. The combination of his poor recent form and the inflated price tag has many in the DFS community off Snedeker this week. The discrepancy between Snedeker’s excellent course history and his expected ownership due to poor recent play creates a great leverage spot for this week’s Famers Insurance Open. In addition to having seven top tens in 11 starts at this event, Snedeker is 60 under par over his last 30 rounds of golf at Torrey Pines. The choice to take a risk on a player like Snedeker could be the key to winning a big GPP this week, but more importantly, the process of using ownership to improve your roster-building skills will make you a better DFS player in the long run.

DraftKings projections are live and Lucas Glover ranks as a top play

Projections are live for the Farmers Insurance Open and Lucas Glover ranks near the top in terms of Pt/$/K on DraftKings. Best known for his consistent ball striking, Glover plays a style of golf that often goes unnoticed by your average golf fan. Solid accurate golf shots have always been a staple in Glover’s game, and when he starts making putts this former U.S. Open Champion has the game to compete well on most courses he plays. Glover enters this week having made 12 straight cuts, and is still somewhat underpriced in comparison to his recent performances. With 4 top 30 or better finishes this season, and a style of game that plays well at Torrey Pines, Glover should make for a great play in any format this week. In 13 career starts at this event Glover has 8 made cuts and three top ten finishes.

Jason Day to play this week with a new caddie

2015 Farmers Insurance Open champion Jason Day will make his season debut with a new caddie on the bag. Luke Reardon is still in the process of acquiring a work visa, so Day will use good friend Rika Batibasaga this week as Reardon tires to sort out his visa issues. Day has not won since the 2016 Players Championship and will look to rebound from a very tumultuous 2017 campaign. Day and longtime caddie/ swing coach Colin Swatton parted ways last season as they both agreed that it was time to make a change on the bag. Day will still use Swatton as a coach, but for now, Luke Reardon is expected to be Day’s full-time caddie. Reasonably priced across the industry Day could gain some steam as the week progresses. This former number one player in the world has a win and two top tens in eight starts at The Farmers Insurance Open.

Morgan Hoffmann making second start since announcement that he has muscular dystrophy

Morgan Hoffmann announced in December that he has an early form of muscular dystrophy. Hoffmann, a former standout at Oklahoma State, has battled right pectoral muscle issues for the last five years and was informed in 2016 that he has facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. Playing in only his second event since he made his diagnosis public, Hoffmann is hopeful to make the most of whatever time he has remaining in professional golf. Hoffmann plans to compete for as long as his body will allow, but the disease is expected to shorten the length of both his playing time and potentially his life. Hoffmann has one top 20 or better finish in five tries at this event and now that the news is out about his disease, he will look to focus on golf. Typically regarded as a boom or bust type of play, Hoffman should only be considered as a salary relief option in a GPP build.
